NIIHANIIIBURIL PENNA TI-IE LGG OF 1955 FOREWORD May this Log-Book of our four year cruise beckon you to follow zealously the precepts and example of our Divine Captain. DEDICATION To Mrs. Elizabeth S. Class of '33 :-- The sailing time has now arrived--hoist anchor, and set sail on your life's voyage, I regret that these orders must be given, for I have come to know you well in your sojourn at the home port. However, I know that you are now well prepared to weather the dangers of the open sea further training would only be irksome, you are eager for the strong winds, the dashing of the spray, the rise and fall of the ship of life. Since it seems best you embark, let me advise you in your course. Set a definite goal -a port with good harbor as your aim in life's voyage. Set your sails so wind or gale cannot drive you from this course. Let me quote McAllister's, The Set of a Soul . 'One ship drives east and another drives west With the selfsame winds that blow: 'Tis the set of the sails And not the gales Which tell us the way to go. l,ike the winds of the sea are the ways of fate As we journey along through life: 'Tis the set of a soul That decides its goal, And not the calm or the strife. A sturdy ship, manned by a gallant crew of ninety, set sail in '29 for foreign seas. Plucky and courageous were the sailors, as they weighed anchor in preparation for four large voyagesg namely, those of the freshman. sophomore, junior and senior years. The weather was fair, when they sailed from their home port, but little did they realize the storms and rough seas which would be encountered in the course of their journeys. The spirit of this crew was undaunted. however: gallantly they braved the deep and in the spring of '33, proudly and triumphantly sailed into their native harbor. Now having returned, these sailors seemed to have gained much knowledge and learning. Likewise they have many tales to relate of the various happenings. During each of the four voyages a log was carefully kept, so let us now pause to take a glimpse of the most important occurrences. On the first sailing, as freshmen, the records of the log show few items of importance. As the sailors were inexperienced, they consequently took only a small part in the activities on this sea. However, two things they distinctly recall-the Halloween Party and the first class dance, at Rosegarden Hall. In one respect the sophomore voyage stands out vividly. On October 9th, 1930, the sailors embarked on a larger ship!a fine, well-built craft, the new High School Building . This enabled them to take part in more activ- ities-athletics and dances in the gymnasium, and the operetta, The Gypsy Rover , in the auditorium. just before the ending of this voyage, they sailed the Yellow Breeches Creek and had a picnic at Williams' Grove, Many of the crew participated in athletics during the junior cruise. The log records in big, bold letters how in football they helped to triumph over Carlisle, thereby capturing the Molly Pitcher Cup. Others took part in the operetta, Miss Cherryblossomf' ln the spring of '32 practically all of the sailors presented the jolly junior jubilee to raise funds for the junior-Senior Prom. This latter event was the most gala occasion of the voyage. ln the fall of '32 a crew of eighty-five set sail for their final cruise to- gether. It was their senior voyage, but one which will linger forever in their memories. Each one of the sailors realized that it was the last time they would ship together. Consequently, they planned many interesting events, so that in the years to come they would recall this farewell voyage with only pleasant memories of happiness. The log has recorded a brilliant football record for some members of the crew who helped to win the championship of the Southern Pennsylvania Conference. This was the outstanding athletic event of the four voyages. During the Christmas season two important social functions were held--a class dance, and the Torch party. Everyone will remember Skidding, presented as the senior play, February 2nd and 3rd, The school operetta, ln Old Louisiana proved equally successful. The crew was delightfully entertained at the annual prom, and soon after- wards the last frolic of the senior voyage was held at Hershey. At the close of the voyage the sailors held impressive ceremonies at the Baccalaureate Services. and received their merited rewards, in the form of diplomas, at the Commencement Exercises. The log has recorded this crew as good shipmen, Each one is now ready to launch his own vessel and sail out of the harbor into the deep. Tl-IE LOG Ol: 1953 58 TI-IE LCC-5 OF 1933 CLASS WILL We, the Class of 1933, of the Mechanicsburg High School, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament hereby making void all previous wills made by us at any time. Such estate as has been entrusted to us, we do hereby dispose of in the following manner: To Mr. R. L. Van Scoten, our superintendent throughout the last five years of our high school career, we give and bequeath our everlasting appreciation for his guidance and understanding and, above all, for his cooperation in the activities of the Class of '33. To the school board who has given its sanction to and thus made possible various of the projects of our high school career we extend a hearty thank you. To Miss Stauffer and M1's. Orris, faculty advisers in this our senior year, we give and bequeath our unfailing gratitude, and we express a desire that their memories of us may, some of them. be pleasant, and not all sighs of relief. To the faculty who have steered the ship of state with unerring judgment, and who have imparted their rich store of knowledge to us unselfishly, we give and bequeath our sincere appreciation. To next year's Torch staff, and to the staffs in the years to come, we give and bequeath the sincere sympathy of the retiring staff. To the Class of 1934, we give and bequeath as its rightful inheritance. our exalted position as seniors to be upheld by it with all due dignity and respect. The following minor bequests a1'e made in order that the Mechanicsburg High School may not suffer the loss of the many noble qualities found in the members of the senior class, and in order that credit may be extended where credit is due to the undergraduate body in their efforts to aid the seniors: I. To Walter Ensminger, we give and bequeath the thanks of the whole class for his efforts in stage-designing and advertisement for dramatic produc- tion which have made possible many class projects. 2. To Tubbs Fish, we give and bequeath Herbert Toms' bicycle in order that he may make the journey to Shiremanstown and back without mishap. 3. To Donald Failor, we give and bequeath Alfred Castle's iron gen- eralship on the football field. 4. Feeling that john Rupp's juvenile histrionic ability should not be lost to the Mechanicsburg High School forever, we give and bequeath the same to Frank Long. 5. We give and bequeath the success of the past year's athletic team. composed largely of the members of the Class of '33, to future such teams. We do hereby appoint and designate as executors of this last will and testament, Miss Dorothy Hamilton and Mr. john Bomgardner. In witness whereof, we the Class of 1933 have to this will and testament set our hand and seal this ninth day of March, in the Year of Our Lord, nine- teen-hundred and thirty-three. Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the Class of 1933 as its last will and testament, in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our MISS IEAN FRANCIS MR. D. I. GLEIM names as witnesses. THE LOG OF 1953 59 Tl-IE LUG O13 1955 CLASS PROPHECY Isn't it exciting to know a governor, personally? Kate asked. Yes, and just imagine spending the week-end at an honest-to-goodness mansion! I reminded her. We were as excited as two school girls because of Governor Tom's invi- tation to the class reunion to be held at the executive mansion in Albany. As our steamer cruised up the Hudson, we stood on deck and discussed this event which was to prove of great importance to both of us. Do you suppose Major Gross will honor us with his presence? l asked. If he does, Anna Beck and Alma Kilmore will be with him, for they're his secretaries, you know. I'll be glad to see them! I feel certain, 'Pete', that Rebecca Stahl and Isabelle Singizer will not be there, Kate rejoined, for they've shipped to South America with the Miller-Stought Expedition. What an exciting time they'll experience living among those man-eating cannibals! For a moment a chill ran up and down my spine thinking of those poor brave girls, but Kate started the conversation again and saved the situation. Oh, but I do hope to see Mary Carolyn Hurst and Nan Hendrian. Mary Carolyn is a professor of English and Nan teaches biology at Columbia. Can you remember how Nan detested worms? Do I! That was fun making her squeal, I thought. Kate, do you know whom I want to see? None other than Lou Mumper and Dick Barley. I hear they're Broadway's best. Perhaps they'll be released long enough to come to the reunion, but then, I doubt it, for they're starring in the comedy King Chisel , Black's hit of the season. When we get back to Mechanics- burg let's go see APlay the Fiddlef Ann Hall and john Walter are playing in it. I heard that at the premiere in Hollywood, the Wolfe-Rider Theatre was packed to capac - - - Look quick, Kate! There are Colonel Zimmerman and Major Baker. And there's Captain Ruth, too. Do you suppose that they will be at the reunion, too? I'm hoping so,-but let's have lunch. I'm simply starved! Susan Houghton and Sara Stuckey are the chief chefs on board, so the food ought to be good. ln the course of the afternoon while promenading on deck, we recognized many more of our classmates of '33. Among them was Doctor Hershner. veterinarian, who was on board in order to attend to Mlle. Dorothy Kutz's sick spaniel. Nurse Basehore who accompanied the doctor, was engaged in treating a very severe headache of Senator Shradley. In the late afternoon, the steamer docked at Albany and Governor Toms met us with ten limousines which were to take us to the mansion, however, we were driven, first of all, to the Whitcomb-Hosler Plant which is the pride man- ufacturing enterprise of the city. As we arrived at the mansion, a band, attired in the familar steel and maroon uniforms was playing Mechanicsburg High School , and we dis- covered Richard Kaley, Donald Shaeffer, and Robert Spahr in the front row. Kate and I cautiously entered the drawing room where we were astonish- ed to find so many world famous celebrities, once our classmates. We took seats and waited for Governor Toms to speak. 'AAnd now, Governor Herbert began, we of the Class of 1933 who are gathered here after twenty years of separation, will endeavor to mend all broken ties and renew old friendships - - - There was a silence, and the hands of some sixty loyal classmates clapped a response. Costumes were designed by Walter Ensminger and made by the girls in the operetta, under the supervision of Miss Atherton. The love affair of Rose, adopted daughter of Pilot Farley, and Richard St. Iohn, a young sugar planter, progresses very smoothly until the interven- tion of Simon Scudder, who loves Rose. Scudder and his friends, Martin and Timms attempt to prove Rose the daughter of an octoroon slave. However. Richard clears his sweetheart's name and he and Scudder fight a duel. The club endeavors to instruct students in acting, in the art of make-up , in the study of plays and dramatists, and encourages talented students to write plays. The latter was a new project this year. Forty-five loyal members give their time and interest to this organization under the direction of Miss lean Francis, dramatic coach. I IUNIOR DRAMATIC CLUB PRESIDENT-SAMUEL DEVENNEY VICE-PRESIDENT-BETTY lVlOWERY SECRETARY-HELEN BLOSER SPONSOR-MR. IOHN BOMGARDNER Through the initiative of some of the ninth grade students and the co- operation of Nlr. Bomgardner, a Iunior Dramatic club was organized this year. All ninth grade students who are interested in dramatics are eligible for the club. Membership is for one year, after which those who are interested may try out for the Senior Dramatic Club. If any member shows unusual ability he automatically becomes a member of the senior group. The Club strives to give the students some general ideas in dramatic art by reading and writing plays and by studying make up and stage sets. I MARIONETTE CLUB PRESIDENT-IOHN MYERS VICE-PRESIDENTS-LOIS FEGAN, SELDEN PATTEE SECRETARY-WILMA D1NELY SPONSORS-MISS ATHERTON, MR. THOMAS Marionettes! We usually think of those miniature creatures, moved by means of strings, as made and operated by professionals. But not always so, for here in M. H. S. those desirous of making marionettes have been busily working this year. They have formed a club, with a view to promoting in- terest in the creation of these unique figures. This organization has proved an activity for both the boys and girls of the school. Together, they have worked toward the successful completion of their interesting projects. Under the supervision of Mr. Thomas, the boys have constructed and painted the marionettes, while the girls, with Miss Atherton as sponsor, have been in charge of costuming them. From the very beginning of school year, the aim of the club was to pre- sent a marionette show. lts plans were Hnally realized when an excellent production of lack and the Beanstalk was given as a feature of one of the assembly programmes this past spring. With the presentation of this show, the fine possibilities of a Marionette Club in M. H. S. were shown. THE LOG OF 1953 74 THE Loca or: 1955 - THE SENIOR ORCHESTRA Dinizcroie-Miss FRANCES FULTON A well trained Senior Orchestra is one of Mechanicsburg High School's greatest assets. Composed of a group of especially chosen musically in- clined , its work as a musical organization has been unsurpassed. Regularly, for each Wednesday assembly, the orchestra offered the mus- ical invocation. Beside this, it accompanied the operetta production ln Old Louisiana. On the other special occasions and in activities, the orchestra has also been very prominent. i THE IUNIOR ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR-MISS FRANCES Fu1.ToN The Iunior Orchestra, composed of younger, less-experienced musicians, was formed to serve as a supplementary unit of the Senior Orchestra. ln this way, vacancies, which occur through graduation, can be filled readily by junior musicians. Weekly rehearsals, under the supervision of Miss Fulton, have resulted in giving to the junior members a sound practical experience in orchestration, as well as a knowledge of orchestral requirements. I THE GLEE CLUB PRESIDENT-MARY CAROLYN HuRsT VICE-PRESIDENT-VVILMER FAusT SECRETARY-MARY FAILOR SPONSOR-MISS FULTON The Glee Club, under the capable direction of Miss Fulton, has completed its second year. The work of this group has progressed rapidly. Various types of singing have been studied in order to allow those students who are at all interested in music to participate. Likewise, the organization has been prominent throughout the year, having taken part in the many school activities. The success of the operetta ln Old Louisiana was due to the ardent support and cooperation of many members of the Glee Club. To a large extent, they contributed material for both the cast and the various choruses, thereby greatly aiding in the entire musical production. Before being admitted as a member into the club, each girl is required to pass a rigid test. Even this did not daunt the spirits of thirty pupils who came out on top for the 1932-33 season. During the year, the club presented numerals to any girl who participated in a certain number of games. This lent zest and inspiration to all the intra- mural activities, and encouraged the girls to work for the much coveted prize. I THE TUMBLING CLUB SPONSOR-MR, GEORGE VORBACH A group of boys, interested in the appreciation of physical culture, as well as the coordination of mind and muscle exemplified in the art of tumbling. organized for the purpose of beginning their career as tumblers. Since the first difllcult and somewhat strenuous periods of instruction dur- ing the infancy of the club, there has been evidenced an amazing degree of perfection. The boys have gone far in bearing out the purpose of their work, -that of establishing harmony between mental and physical action. I THE ART CLUB PRESIDENT-WALTER ENSMINGER TREASURER-DOROTHY PORTER SECRETARY-MARTHA BOWMAN SPONSOR-Miss KATHERINE MAIN The Art Club this year was one of the most interesting and most popular clubs in the school. Its work was purely that of the handicraft nature. Dur- ing the first semester, the members worked with leather, making such articles as pocket books, belts, and book marks. The latter part of the year was spent in working with metal. Watch fobs, paper knives, bracelets, and numerous other articles were created. The students derived much pleasure and benefit from this extra-curricular activity. fri-15 Loca Loi: 1953 76 T1-IE Loo or 1935 - CENTRAL TREASURY TREASURER-REBECCA STAHL Ass r TREASURER-VVILLIS BRENIZER BOOKKEEPER-PHYLLIS FERNBAUGH SPONSOR-MISS STAYNER The Central Treasury has assumed the responsibility of the financial affairs of Mechanicsburg High School for five consecutive years. Three cap- able members ofthe senior class are chosen annually by Miss Stayner to meet once a week when the money is deposited and withdrawn as needed. Neces- sary material, such as blanks, check books, etc. are furnished by the local bank where the funds are deposited. In 1931, the budget system was introduced into the high school, greatly increasing the amount of work to be done by the treasury. The budget sys- tem is composed of approximately ninety-four per cent of the students of the senior and junior high schools. At the end of each year, the Central Treasury divides the funds equally among the different organizations. 4 STAMP CLUB PRESIDENT-LLOYD TRIMBLE VICE-PRESIDENT-ROBERT MENDLER TREASURER-MAX VANSCOTEN SPONSOR-MRS. ORRIS Stamp collecting is a hobby, in which it is estimated there are more than one million active collectors in this country. ln our club there are twenty- five members, working on various types of collections, Each person upon entering the club must learn the philatelist's terms which aid him in gaining a greater appreciation of his collections. Philately, while a hobby, provides one with a liberal education in that it furnishes the means of finding many interesting and sometimes astonishing facts about the countries of the world. Each country puts on its stamps pictures of the things of which it is proudest, its most beautiful mountains, rivers, flowers, birds. animals--its greatest men, buildings, and works of art--and its most import- ant natural products, industries, and engineering accomplishments. Current stamp literature and a catalogue are kept on hand for those in- terested in philately. 4 AGRICULTURE CLUB PRESIDENT-LEROY S. IAcoBs VICE-PRESIDENT-CARL B. The local club is a unit in a nation wide organization whose purpose is Hto promote vocational agriculture, to train members for future participation in farmer organizations, to develop rural leadership, to encourage cooperative effort, and to strengthen the con- fidence of the farm boy in himself and his work. The club has advanced with a spirit well in keeping with the principles upon which it is based. Meetings are held twice a month.
