XXXVIII Annual Edition Published by the Students of Mechanic Falls High School Sdifvrial Educational progress over the years has been great in all phases of school- ing, from the primary schools through college. We, the editors of the Pilot, feel that this advancement is well shown by the improved standing of Mechanic Falls High School. When you look at our building from the outside, it may seem rather small and yellow and, perhaps, drabg but when you come inside during the school day you would find it quite different. It may be small, but what is learned here is greatg the color may be yellow and drab, but the students don't feel that way, it isn't a little, yellow, drab school in their opiniong it is THEIR schoolg it belongs to them, and they love it. The student-teacher relationship is good, the teachers do not know a stu- dent by a number or a last name: they know the student by his first name and know ABOUT that student. Respect for the teachers is instilled in a student from the first day he enters our school, he is made to feel they are his friends, but he is not to take advantage of this friendship. Mechanic Falls High School has a high academic ratio in its classes, and students and teachers both are proud of that fact. They are proud of every student that goes on to a higher educa- tion, or on to a job, service, or a home, and makes good. They are proud when the graduates are given as much high praise as any other students are anywhere. The teachers try to give every stu- dent a thorough knowledge of every subject and teach him to apply it to his daily life. The text-books are not thought to be dry tepid things, hard to digest, they are used to add to the stu- dent's knowledge of the world that surrounds him, and to show him how to put every subject into practice on his own level 'and prepare him for his future Mechanic Falls High School is proud of its past graduates and plans to be just as proud of its future ones. The school will improve even more as time goes on and as education advancesg and through it all we shall be happy to say, I went to school there, and I am proud of it. Dedication MR, ARTHUR GOUIN We, the graduating class of 1959, are proud to respectfully dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Gouin. We are more than grateful to Mr. Gouin for the hard work and many hours he has willingly given to make us a better class. During our graduating year, as our home- room advisor, he pushed, prodded, and some- times even got a little angry. A11 this, and even more he sacrificed for our class. Our sincere vote of thanks is always with you. FIRST ROW, left to right: Advisor, Mrs. Leclercg Theodore Marchand, Rebecca Keene, Roger Sargent, Janice Strout, Ronald Rollins, Arthur Cotton. Baseball 5 7- 58 Under the new coach, Fred Coffin, the Mechanic Falls High School baseball team went on to another successful season The won and lost record was a mediocre 6 and 4. Although this doesn't seem very terrific, two of those losses went to the highly polished Leavitt Institute team which was the winner of the Sandy Val- ley Championship. And both of these losses were by a one run differential. a well earned victory over the mighty Freeport Falcons, winner of their divi4 sional championship. Also Burleigh! Tib- bett's spectacular one hit, six to nothing shutout over the strong Norway Rams avenged a twelve to two defeat by them earlier in the season. Offensively we were strong as usual. The team's batting average was close to 285 which doesn't seem too good, but considering the fact that we had two or three hitters with batting averages of less than one hundred, it is very good. The highest batting averages were: 500 and 428. Our team was a running team with Smalley Sargent leading in the stolen base department with 13. Defensively we were fair but lost most of our games on just plain mistakes. We had no great pitching besides Burleigh Tibbett's one hitter and Howard Asyby's Relief performances. Kaskcfball This year we didn't expect to have a very potent basketball team, but much to our surprise we had one of the finest teams ever at, Mechanic Falls High. I might add, if it hadn't been for all the hard work and patience bestowed upon us by what I and the rest of our team consider the best coach ever to be at Mechanic Falls, we probably would have had just another mediocre ball team. Our won and lost record for the over- all season was 17 wins and 4 losses, in- cluding the loss at Lewiston to North Yarmouth Academy. We had a point index of 17. 647 and were seeded fifth at the Western Maine Class M Tour- nament. The highlight of the season took place the night of December 30 when we won over Freeport, the defenders of the Westem Maine Class M cham- pionship, by a score of '76 to 71. Our worst defeat of the season was to the highly rated North Yarmouth Academy in the quarterfinals at Lewiston, '72-50. CO-CAPTAINS THIS I BELIEVE To me, life means happiness. I think everyone has times when life is wonderful. But, the secret is to love life even though bad luck has hit you and the chips are down. Life is a mir- acle: life is an opportunityg life is a trial. I think anyone could live to be a thousand years old and still never see all the miracles of life. If I had my way, I'd see every street, every hill, and meet every person in this world. I believe that we were put on this earth to enjoy the world about us. So often people are so busy trying to be a suc- cess, they forget that just being alive is a success. Be a star, not a satellite. Don't revolve around others, doing what they do, saying what they say. Be an in- dividual. Let the people revolve around you. Join them sometimes, but do not put yourself in their orbit. Your life is your own. lf God had wanted carbon copies, He would have made us all identical. I want to live a normal life and die without regrets. One does not have to do something outstanding to be out- standing in the eyes of heaven. He must merely give what he can for the better- ment of the earth. A successful life consists of making yourself happy with- out making others unhappy . . . this I believe. THE NEGATIVE ATTITUDE Many students in M. F. H. S. have a very negative attitude about the ac- tivities and clubs in the school. Per- haps they obtain this way of thinking from their parents. It seems to me that no matter who is in charge, no matter what plans are made, there are about five or six people doing all the work. This is seldom seen in larger schools. One would think that these individuals who leave the work for someone else A SONNET It's hard to write a sonnet, I can say! But I can list so many things I like: A rosy sunset at the close of day: My gun, the faithful dog, and a long hikeg A walk in spring to where the ice is out: The air is fresh, the sky is very blue. And there in wait I find the lurking troutg The fun is great, the catch is all too few. The squirrel gray I find in the oakg The pheasant hide in bushes on the slopeg The deer blend in with all the shades of brown. The autumn days are best of all, Ifind. But all too soon I leave them far behind. By Fern Bosse would be ashamed. But are they? No. In fact they often brag about this shirk- ing of duty as if it were something of which they should be proud. The weak excuses that these people give are un- believable. How can such students be so negative about everything and en- joy it? Will these same people still be negative after they have graduated and are on their own? I certainly hope that they leave this feeling far behind them. Evaluate yourself! Do you have a neg- ative attitude? MECHANIC FALLS HIGH M is for masterful, that which we are. E is for excellent, the best by far. C is for courage: we have that, too. H is for honor, and that's for our school. A is for aimg our goal to set. N is for nearness, that we can't forget. One rule is that clubs must meet ten times a year, and another is that the clubs have a written constitution. The Student Council receives five per cent of the money earned by different classes from various activities. Other money making projects were a roller skating party, a dance honoring those who made the honor roll for the second term, and a sale of banners, hats, wolves, and beanies. Last fall we attended the second Stu- dent Council Convention at Deering High School. Many helpful ideas were gathered Freshman Member: Sandra Baird. Senior Members: Joanne Lenahan, Roger Sargent, Howard Ashby, Lynda Henley, Dianne Rollins, and Arthur Cotton.
