DEDICATION .. FACULTY .... SENIORS ........ SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SCHOOL LIFE ..... SPORTS ........ A. T ttf' .fD ' MISS MAY KELLERHALS DEDICATION. . This is a salute to two of the most distinguished graduates of Mechanic Arts, the dedicated teachers, Miss May Kellerhals and Miss Frances Ek. Miss Kellerhals, biology teacher, has prided her- self on presenting a comprehensive view of the in- terrelations of living things, encouraging lab work whenever possible. ln the math department, Miss Ek, holder of numerous advanced degrees in her field, has become synonymous with all that is untiring, precise, and ingenious in a teacher. These respected women, who attended grade if 1 1-f1se W if e 1 f MISS FRANCES EK school, high school, and the University of Minnesota together, have imparted a vital interest to their sub- iects which cannot fail to instill the scholastic spirit in many of their students. V Miss Ek, after three years at Humboldt, came to Mechanics in l924, while Miss Kellerhals began her teaching career at the school in l925. lt is to these exalted two, partners in the great work of expert teaching, that we proudly dedicate our 1959 M . MR. SIMMER, Principal lt is the basic philosophy of our principal, Mr. Simmer, that has made Mechanic Arts a good school. Mr. Simmer, and Mr. Schanke, our assistant principal, work together in the best interest of the student body. Although they are busy, they are never too busy to listen to a student's viewpoint. When we enter high school we begin to make MRS. SCANLON, Counselor MR. SCHANKE, Assistant Principal decisions about our future occupation. We are not always sure iust what we want to be or what sub- iects we will have to take. Mrs. Scanlon and Mr. Peterson, our counselors, are always ready to help us straighten out our problems, advise us to what occupation we could be successful at, and how to get the most out of our program. The first sight of the halls With rows and rows of the tombs of books And everywhere a freshman looks The shadow of a senior falls First homecoming, different and new The cheering of the oval's flight And laugh into the glowing night Dance away minutes all too few First Snow-day, bright red glowing face A paradise of blades with silver glow Chipping crystal and slashing snow Trees adorned in finest lace The second dawn, the second year No longer the babes, the youngest ones We're older now, it's much more fun Gone the newness, gone the fear WE'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER That cupidgram from that special one A melody of love divine Just to say, Will you be mine? A smile, a blush, a lot of fun The wheel of fortune stops at three Junior year with things to do Time to plan the future too And take your lessons seriously Out of the mystic land called night A splash of color and aching feet A banquet served, a feast complete To make the J.S. Prom just right Now the end is the beginning Meet again, we do not know Sad, yet happy as we go To seek the things that are worth winning ABBOTT DENNIS Rocket: You fiend! S TRAINER FOOTBALL HAS UPS AND DOWNS My ff .gym Mechanic Arts football for '58 was one long series of surprises, as the Trainers, plagued by injuries during the entire sea- son, came up with the necessary out- standing performances to roll to a season record of three wins, three losses and one tie. Sparked by the grim determination of the linemen and the outstanding plays of a few uniniured backs, the gridmen were able to upset highly-rated Central in the dual Homecoming. A goal line stand on the two yard line which stopped four successive attempts of the Minutemen, was a lasting commentary on the defen- sive strength of the Trainers. Center Francis Boerian and end Roscoe Garrett, both seniors, secured berths on the All-City team for their efforts. Guard Ray Duran, a senior as well as tackle Maurice Mauritis and end Larry Ogden, both iuniors, received honorable mention. M. A. - 19 Johnson - O M. The trainer six were unlucky enough to finish the season with an O-8 record, as they lacked the team- work to upset their conference rivals on the Audi- torium ice. Starting off against a well-trained Hard- ing sextet and then moving against powerhouse Johnson, the Trainers had two defeats against them before they had time to organize. After that it was cn long procession of defeats -in which their op- ponents, however poor, were blessed with scoring opportunities that they would not pass up. On the brighter side Jesse Romero, who kept alive the Trainer chances with his timely tallies in close games, was awarded honorable mention. Brighter still was the nonconference success story, which saw the ice- men defeat such nemeses as Mahtomedi, St. Paul Park, and Edison. . . f Y .v V . i A J ,L B HockEY . in A 4, ' 4 , Z X, Row l: C. With only a week of practice before the April 6th nonconference opener against Minneapolis Pat- . 5-CHU! rg C , ouch rick Henry, the Trainers will be hard put to develop their proper early-season form. However, the team play promises to be excellent, since many ofthe boys have played together for years, especially in Legion competition. With Mr. Dave Brill as their mentor, the gymnasts gained the necessary form to win second place in the city meet and second in the region. Gary Hartmon and Dick Knowlton were masters of the high bar in the ad- vanced lBl class, while John Heille and Dick Forga were prominent intermedi- ate gymnasts. Harold Spies was a promising beginner. Experienced participants on the parallet bars were Bob Desmond, Gary Hart- mon and Gary Flemino. John Heille was tops in the intermediate class and Bob Desmond was the best beginner. In side-horse competi- tion, Ralph Glass and Bob Desmond were the leaders. The mats were domin- ated by Hartmon,' Flemino, and Knowlton in the up- per division, and by John Heille in the intermediate class. ln the state apparatus meet, Gary Hartmon was outstanding, placing sec- ond on the high bar and tieing for second on the mats. Flemino tied for third on the mats. nv-3 CROSS COUNTRY M. Pesci, B. Desmond, J. Coo G. Youker, Coach Mr. Brill. The seven-man cross-country team of '58, a hard running and well prac- ticed squad under the direction of Mr. Brill, 'Finished seventh in the city meet and fifteenth in the regional. A. students. The Bowling League, under the dir- ection of Mr. Hislop, which met every Tuesday night at Harkins Lanes, consisted of forty-eight registered members of a national youth organization. Intra- mural basketball, in the form of a single elimination tournament, found rabid support from the various . . . INTRAMURAL SPORTS homerooms. The popular Tuesday editions of Sports Nite, which had an average attendance of nearly one hundred M. A. gym enthusiasts, tended to weld student support for the intramural program. Boys and girls alike were treated to three hours of basket- ball, volleyball, ping-pong, apparatus, tumbling and trampoline as well as a session of dancing. Mr. Wright's Rifle Club, made up of members of the National Rifle Association, met twice weekly for shooting instruction and range firing.
