Hylton, F. Forys, C. Crandall. Row 2: T. De-Ziel, C. Ryck- man, B. Holden, B. An- derson. The eleven men and women on our custodial staff, who are responsible for Mechanic Arts' orderly halls and classrooms, also deserve a big thank you. This branch of the Department of the Interior keeps our school functioning in all weather. A thousand gallons of oil, for instance, is needed daily for the comfort of the eleven hundred people in the building. Keeping supplies on hand at all times is only one custodial duty. Many thanks are due to our efficient custodial and cafeteria staffs. The cafeteria staff, seven women, works an eight hour day, beginning at 6:30 a.m. Each day they must prepare food and maintain facilities for students and faculty. An average of 300 bottles of milk, 25 pies, and IS dozen chiliburgers, magically disappear each day. Our cafeteria staff makes all this possible. CAFETERIA STAFF Row 1: B. Urban, I. De Marco, I. Greip. Row 2 M. Henderson, Manager L. Young, M. Haugen: T. Campion. ll I eniord 4 1 . ,. MECHANIC ARTS, ON CAPITOL HILL-Capitol Hill would be only half com- plete without the senior legislative body-the senate. Like a Minnesota senator, serving four years, a typical Mechanic Arts senior spends four years in the service of his school. Now that our term of ofhce is running short, we reHect back on our growth and our ac- complishments. As freshmen we learned to follow the rules set up for us by our senior advisory group. How we waited for the day to come when we could make our own laws, as well as those for the underclassmen. During our sophomore year we became aware that if a law was to be put through that would benefit our class, we had to be willing to work for it. We began to realize we too had power in the school life. Demonstrating this power and the will to work was the May Day Dance we sponsored. Already we were exercising our freedom to vote by electing our own king and queen. By the time we were juniors our growth was becoming very evident. A wise selection of class officers and representatives was made and they carried us through the year with successes like the Iunior Vodvil and the Iunior-Senior Prom. Our class grew through sorrows equally. The loss of our beloved coach and teacher, Gus Sundberg, left a dark spot in the happiness of our junior year. Another disappointment came when our football team lost the city championship. As if to compensate for this, our basketball team not only took the city and district championships but Finished third in the regional games. Our senior year at last! We are now the elders of the senate. Ever since our freshman year we have been thinking and planning about the things the Class of 1955 would accomplish. Again this year we have chosen an exceptionally good slate of officers and representatives. With their leadership the Class of 1955 is fast becoming one that will be long remembered for their helpfulness, cheerfulness, studiousness, and sincerity. Yes, accomplishments and sorrows have been many. But still as we close the door on the bustling halls of Mechanic Arts, our hope is that the freshmen have the same kind of glorious four years that we had. NVithout unexpected fortunes and misfortunes, how could our class be able to go out into the world, to stand up for our rights and our freedoms, and to hold such wonderful memories of high school days? NVe now leave this building with our intellectual and spiritual education to take our place in the state as we have taken and left our place at high school. Alfonso, Vice President: E. Weiss, Presidentg Mr. Frank O'Rourke, Advisor: I. Gunter, Secretary. Leading the senators are the majority and minority leaders-the class officers and representatives. At their meetings they have often disagreed vigorously, sometimes over trivial matters, sometimes over ones important to our class and to our future. Under the patient, guiding hand of Mr. Frank O'Rourke, disagreements have been settled the American way, by discussion, to the satisfaction of all concerned. To our ollicers, representatives, and advisor, we give our thanks for making the Class of 1955, through their thriving leadership and knowledge of good government, one of which we can be proud. Its knowledge of government and better participation in it is expressed in the school life and activities of student and faculty. One can easily see it is a school with democratic ways and without racial and religious prejudices. Our school life and activities are combined because one section can hardly get along without the other, just as the students themselves cannot get along without each other. This is easily acknowledged throughout the school year as we look forward to all the coming events whether they be big or small. There is First of all homecoming right in the heart of football season. There are the hockey and basketball games, school dances, clubs, formal da ' I 1 h ' ' nces, particu ar y t e IS, and the fun and seriousness of class elections. For the seniors, they have their senior trip and that all important day of their life, graduation. Let us not forget our friends and classmates we have come to know and work by and our teachers who, no matter what, never seem to let us down. All this can mean so much to us as we are b ' ll l in our way of living. Our school life and activities help to play a much bigger part in our lives than we realize for the students of MA today will be the citizens of the U. S. tomorrow. Yes, with the democratic ways of our students and faculty, we have made Mechanic Arts a school that rightfully deserves to be located On Capitol Hill. emg, as we as earning to be democratic . gf .J ,, s at . He is well-liked and respected by not only the members of the hockey and football teams of which he is head coach and line coach respectively, but also by his fellow coaches, teachers, and students for his friendly and cooperative attitude he has toward everyone. A Mr. Clarence Adams is this person. We, the class of 1955, are dedicating the 1955 M Sports Section to the Secretary of our Hard-Water Navy. Biff, as he is better known to all, has contributed an unmeasurable amount to Mechanic Arts not only on the athletic Held but also in the school building as a student, coach, and teacher. Only four teams managed to score against the Trainers menacing defense. One of the most thrilling battles of the war was Mechanics 7-6 victory over a tough, determined Harding eleven. The two teams staged a sea-saw hat- tle until late in the third quarter when Harding finally crossed MAB goal line. But the Trainers, maintaining their unusual ability to come from hehind late in it game, scored on a pass play from Chico Munos to Floyd Smaller, who took the pass unniolested in the end-zone seconds after the fourth quar- ter hegan. MA's quick thinking John Garrett picked up the ball and outllanked the enemy to score the game winning extra-point alter receiving a had pass from center. Powerful Central, somewhat duplicating their performance of last year when they dufeatctl Mechanics zqfo to win the conl't'rencc chanipionsliip and qualify for the Twin City Game, won the conference title for the second consecutive year, this time defeating MA hy a score till Ivo. .-Xltliough Mechanf ics lost the game, they did exceptionally well in allowing the Minutemen, who handed highly rated Washburn a 27-o sliellacking in this year'sd'l'win City Game, only six points. ff: -.3 c W - . , X-if ..t 1-1 tt -f-or-:-ff Ms. -. 1 13-we i-ewW,s.v-m:vmq1gn-11 .kv K' 1 Air Force Soars To Cily Title A BASKETBALL va, R. General Howie Schultz, in his First year of high school coaching, directed Mechanic Arts' air force to an undefeated conference season and the City Conference Championship. Led by the outside shooting and excellent ball-handling of guards Floyd Smaller and Buzz Ransom, and the rebounding power and inside shooting of Art Renteria, Frank Silva, Iohn Garrett, Ron Smith, and Bob Cramer, the Trainers Finished the conference season with a record of eight wins and no losses to win the City Championship for the second consecutive year. Then the Trainers went into a slump which started at Williams Arena when they lost the Twin City Game to Washburn by a score of 60-42. lt seemed as though MA was back on the winning path after the first round of the District IS playoffs when they came from behind to defeat Wilson 50-45 in an exciting overtime. But the winning path was a short one for MA. After gaining a comfortable I4 point half-time lead over Humboldt in the semi-finals of the district playoffs, the Trainers were stunned by the Indians who made a remarkable comeback to squeeze out a 40-37 victory. In conference play the Trainers defeated Murray 59-44, Washington 48-35, Central 47-4t, Harding 69-57, Iohnson 71-52, Wilson 50-45, Monroe 55-52, and Humboldt 58-48. B BASKETBALL Row 1: N. Defiel, E. Losing to Harding C3-oj, Murray f4'OJ, Washington Q5-ij, Humboldt K6-ol, and state chamipon Iohnson fI2'O,, MA's naval crew gave each team a rough and tough game. Because he had only four seniors on the team, this was Secretary of the Navy Biff Adams' year to rebuild his Navy. The four seniors were wingers Iim Moore, Don Kealy, Nick Sauro and goal guard Herbie Brunell. IP Returning sailors next year are Ierry Evans, Luke Kealy, Virg Zilles, each of whom gave a good account of themselves and saw considerable action at the blue line.
