Mr. Wooley was assistant prin- cipal at MA for two years and was to go to Murray as Principal this year. He received his B.A. degree at Macalester College and did grad- uate Work at the University of Min- nesota. After receiving his M.A. de- gree at the University of California, he taught sixth and twelfth grade students Social Studies, Biology and Science. Four years were spent in the Navy as a Medic and then a year and a half was spent as a vet- erans' counselor. He was an assist- ant principal for Five years-three at Murray, two at Mechanics. Those who had the troubles found that Mr. Wooley could al- ways find a few minutes of his busy schedule to talk things over in an understanding way. So to Mr. Iohn Wooley, we, the graduating class of 1954, sadly dedicate this M, Mr. Wooley of Work A M --f ru.or--a...,,N- A f Mr. Harold Wolcott Mr. Harold Wolcott known more affectionately to his students as Prof, began his years at MA back in 1921. They were years of hard work in which he gave his time as business manager of the M, sales promoter, and a hundred and one other duties, so freely and un- selfishly. Prof was always willing to help his students when in need and had an understanding quality which brought him the respect and admiration of his students and fel- low teachers. We the class of 1954 humbly co- dedicate the '54 M to you, Mr. Wolcott, as a small token of appre- ciation for what you have done for us and the school during a lifetime rich in tangible work and intan- gible reward. Mr Wolcott at Work swf, . M Staff Presents Looking through this M now or after the years have slipped away, there will be many a smile, laugh- ter, or a tear perhaps of those memorable days at MA. October 9 was Homecoming the First big event of the year. Amid the suspense and cheering of the coronation we crowned our king and queen. Hang up Wash. was our slogan, and hang up Wash. we did. It was a thrilling game with a close score, I2-7, MA the victor. The game was followed by a dance in the school gym. February 19. Sno Day. Though originally sched- uled for February 5, we finally crowned queen Iudy Reiling and king Iim McGowan. Since the weather- man refused to cooperate with us, all activities at Como were called off. Again our day closed with a dance in the gym. Editor-in-chief .,... ,,., . . . ....,...,... Bruce Olson Assistant Editor ., ....,., ,.....,.,. .... S h erry Bambusch Sports Editors .. ,.... Through constant effort and hard work the play was a huge success. The Christmas assembly was put on with the com- bined efforts of the Music department, Speech de- partment and stage force. It, too, pleased its audience. Surely you haven't forgotten Valentine's day- with its fun and frolic and blushing faces. Or the Iunior Vaudeville either with all its entertainment. But then came the big event of the year. The I-S Prom. Girls scurried-boys worried. On the following pages we hope we have recaptured for you those memorable events. The M staff pre- sents the school year 1953-54 pictorially. New Leaders Welcomecl Mr. Edberg Mr. George Edberg, principal of Mechanic Arts, graduated from Grasston High School, Grasston, Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota, University of North Dakota, and St. Cloud Teachers College. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. Before Mr. Edberg came to MA he was principal at Dassel, Mabel, and Fertile, Minnesota. He was assistant principal at Iohnson High School, St. Paul. Mr. Edberg has also taught mathematics and physics besides coaching football, basketball, and baseball before he became principal. Outside school, Mr. Edberg likes to hunt, Fish, play golf, and watch athletic programs. He also takes an active part in his church's activities. Mr. Edberg is a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves and spends considerable time on naval affairs. Mr. Lackner Mr. Iohn Lackner came to M.A. in September, 1953, as assistant principal. Among the duties of Mr. Lackner are working with attendance, discipline, and setting up the program of studies for the students. Mr. Lackner also takes time out for a few hobbies. They are, in the importance listed: hunting and fishing, camping, raising flowers, traveling, photography, and sports. His education consists of graduating from Washing- ton High School in I932, graduating from St. Thomas in r936, and securing his Master's Degree of Secondary School of Administration from the University of Minne- sota in 1949. Mr. Lackner has taught school for eighteen years in the city of St. Paul. He started teaching at Iackson Elementary School. From there he taught at Washing- ton High School. Who can say what our feelings were when we first entered the halls of Mechanic Arts. Perhaps they were the same that every freshman class experience, perhaps they were different. Let's recall a few of these experiences, if we can, of our lives as Freshmen. How lost we seemed to be in the bigness of Mechanic Arts and with the upperclassmen doing little to help by directing us to either the wrong Hoor or room or both. We made many new friends and had many good times with old ones and we were determined to make a name for our class in the future. None but those who have gone through high school can realize how eagerly we awaited the opening of our Sophomore year, how glad we were to get back to school, and to see once more the familiar faces of all. How big we thought we were then! It is only now that we look back at other Sophomore classes that we grasp the hidden meaning of the term Sophomore. Wise Fools we were indeed. A great amount of both hard work and fun was ours then with the end of the year coming all too quickly and it was time for summer vacation. When we entered our Iunior year we found we had many privileges and responsibilities. Representative meetings, and elections of class oflicers were a fraction of the events that started the year. The Iunior-Senior Prom, now, was uppermost in the minds of all and we devoted all our energies to it. Everyone knows how we sponsored dances and the Iunior Vodvil to raise money. When it finally came off the following May all who went declared that it was the best that had ever been given. The dance was a huge success and we were satisfied. Another year had gone. The last year! How disagreeable it sounds and how much we envy the Freshmen. They would willingly change places with us, would we with them? But all good things must have an end, and so it is with our high school life. When our class is scattered north and south, east and west, when most have forgotten the others and the lives of all are more than half spent, there will be a warm spot in the heart of each one of us for Mechanic Arts, and a thought and a sigh for these days that have passed. Perhaps we have not always done our best, but our hearts have been right and our principles high, and we believe that we have left a record which in future years we can look back on with pride. Since there are probably many of you who do not know how the Honor Roll is determined we thought we would try to explain it to you. Our hopes are that many more of you will have your names on it in future years. Marks are scored according to a point system set up by the Department of Education. They are in three classes College Preparatory Courses such as Spanish and College English 12, etc., which equal 8 points for an A . It is important therefore to take courses that are a little harder thus carrying more points if your goal is the Honor Roll. Each year all of your grades are averaged together and that average is your total average for the year. When you graduate, the four averages are added h d f ra e is a B or higher you will have made the Honor Roll We. are proud of those seniors who have achieved this goal It is with great pride that we, the graduating class of 1954, present our scholastic leaders. These activities are held both in the class room and out, they break the school routine and give the students not only one opportunity to develop their talents, but also a chance to work together and get greater enjoyment out of school. Knowledge of different subjects and development of leadership abilities are brought forth through activities. Students who may some day be journal- ists, scientists, or professional people may obtain their start in these activities. The music and speech departments not only entertain the school but develop their own knowledge of the activity. While the Student Council and class representatives act as mediators between the students and the faculty and guide the students through their four years at MA, they obtain leadership qualities that will help them in the future. These activities present many events that highlight the school year. Such events include: Homecoming with its football game and splendid dance, Sno-Day with dance and frolic in the snow, the operetta which this year was 'Mikado,' and the plays and assemblies we all enjoyed. Throughout the year activities play a major role in school life. Q U F, .m fi H..-A 'Q duo Q--.nn ,.f? The Life of our school is the pep at assemblies, the interest in homecoming, the sports teams, the various plays, the Iunior-Senior Prom and last, but certainly not least, is graduation. These things all take place out of the classrooms. The fun, and yet work, some of us put into the assemblies always assures a big success and is a part of our school life. But the hard work is soon forgotten in the fun of putting it on in front of an audience. Our first play of the year Uncle Fred Flits Byl' turned out to be a howling success. The theme for the Iunior Vodvil this year was High Button Shoesi' and Bobby Sox which consisted of two parts. One half was modern and the other half took one back to the Gay 90,s. Not a soul could forget the beautiful portrayal of A Midsummer Nightls Dream. On St. Valentine's day the Sophomore class sponsored the singing Valentines that the students sent to their secret loves and some of them sent singing valentines to their not so secret loves. '4Sno Day is here againln with all the fun and excitement of crown- ing Iudy Reiling Queen and Iim McGowan King. But the afternoon of fun and snow balling was canceled because of no snow. The dance went on anyway and everyone had a good time. The two A Choirs presented the Mikado as their spring operetta which turned out beau- tifully. The biggest and most thrilling event of the year was the Iunior- Senior Prom when all the girls in their formals and the boys in their tuxedos marched in the Grand Ball at the Radisson Hotel in Minne- apolis. Senior Day was full of old memories when the Senior class presented an assembly of scenes of never-to-be forgotten memories. In the after- noon the Seniors went to Taylors Falls on a picnic, where with friends and classmates they had a lot of fun. Graduation, in itself, was a big event as it showed what fine progress the students had made in their past four years of schooling. wwf- Nrifmm X if' M ff wld' V' X 'P' 3? 2 W., X - 'luv' Q- I ww K Q -ESQ 9y,wwmJWv l W M fa wif fQWQQ,?YaW'3AwlfWCf6'4WAUL meg ,Q MTV WTS M W wwf JAM aww ,JM WWW' JZW aw' W4 Ziff fqifq-Q 266 Q JR 5'-L. Mr. Alden IGusl Sundberg The sport section of the 1954 'M' is being dedicated to Alden fGusj Sundberg. Midway in our best season of basketball in four years Gus was killed in an automobile accident. It was a terrible shock to everybody, not only the basketball team, because Gus was as much a part of our school as the school song is. Gus was a graduate of Hamline, and made all conference forward on the Hamline basketball team. He came to Mechanics in 1947 and from that time on devoted most of his time and effort to making a better school for everybody. Gus was more than just a basketball coach, or a baseball coach, he was a friend of every freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior, who needed or wanted a friend. Class after class will graduate but the name of Gus will live on at Mechanic Arts, and in the heart of everyone who knew him. The sport section of the 1954 'M' is hereby dedicated to teacher, coach, and friend, Alden fGusj Sundberg. The students who play sports learn early that they work together to win. The practice of fair play, good sportsmanship, and teamwork are the things that bring good school spirit to MA. Boys' minds as well as their bodies are improved through sports. Sports teach a boy the meaning of fair play and also of striving together for a common goal through teamwork. Whether they participate in major sports or minor ones it is an honor and a challenge, for it is the persons in the sports uniform that is respected and copied. Good luck or bad luck, our boys have learned the meaning and practiced the traits of good sportsmanship and teamwork which will be of value to them always. This year has been a good year for sports at MA and we can recognize this as ia symbol of what the students and school stand for. We know that our boys have never failed us and never will, and as the years pass they will lead MA to new and better victories. M Clubs Symbolize Athletic Achievement 5 Row 1: D. Alfonso, T. MA's gridders under the guidance of Coach Frank O'Rourke, and Assistant Coach 'Biff' Adams, fought to a second place standing in the conference and came up' with a very good record of six wins to only one loss. The veteran backfield consisting of Don Todora at left halfback and Pat Daddario at quarterback, the two pass-masters, along with hard-driving Lee Ballard at fullback and speedy Don Kealy at right halfback piled up yardage by the score. The hard driving line which often discouraged our opponents by either opening holes or closing them was led by Seniors: Bruce Olson at center, Ernie Wederath and Dick Gulner as guards, tackles Roger Riedl and Bob Learman, with Roger Zentzis at end rounding out the Seniors. Filling out the rest of the line were Iuniors: Bob Mercado at tackle, Iim Trecartin at guard, and Frank Silver, Iohn Garrett, and Iohn Adams sharing the job at the ends. .str rw Qxxnasfziasltir is Aguirre, A. meister, C. They are Co-Champions of the City Conference, Champs of District 15, and Consola- tion Champs of Region 5. The team showed great stamina and determination in capturing the conference title with a 7 to 1 record and by setting a new conference scoring record of 76 points. Led by the height and inside shooting of Ierry Sundall, center, Iohn Garrett, Verlin Hanson as forwards and supported by the ball-handling and outside shooting of Don Todora, Iess Ramirez, and Buzz Ransom as guards, the cagers won the district playoffs and Went on to win the consolation title of the regional playoffs. The cagers placed Ierry Sundall and Iohn Garrett on the All-City Basketball Team. Even with the untimely death of their coach, 'iGus', Sundberg the team proved they had the will to win, and the fighting spirit that MA is proud of. X. I The Trainers skated with the defending state champions, Iohnson, all through the game and wound up with a 0-0 tie. They then came back and beat Monroe 2-0, lost to Harding 0-2, and Whipped Wilson 3-1. Central was completely out-classed when the Trainers threw everything at them in a 6-0 victory. MA tied Washington 1-1, lost to Humboldt 0-2, and lost to Murray 1-3. In all games, the Trainers won 3, lost 3, and tied 2 to end up in Fifth place. The ice men won 5, lost 3, and tied 2 in non-conference play. This year's team consisted of six seniors: Don Doane, Dick Gulner, Iim Donovan, Pat Daddario, Don Weiss, and Tom Osthoff. They all played very good hockey through the four years they attended MA. With a captain for each sport, Marlys Lecy led us in football, Phil Heir in hockey and Sherry Bambusch in basketball. The cheerleaders were very pleased to have four new basketball uniforms provided by the athletic fund. There are three seniors leaving this year. All new cheerleaders will be chosen for next year. Faculty Gives Guidance To Athletes Boys' minds as well as their bodies are improved through sports. Sports teach a boy the meaning of fair play and also the meaning of striving for a common good through teamwork. These things will help him in the future and make him a better contribution to society. Whether they participate in major sports such as football, basketball, and hockey or in minor ones including track, baseball, golf, and swimming a boy is doing better for him- self. To star in one of these sports is every boy's dream and treasure! Always, though, the tradition of fair play and good sportsmanship is carried on as long as we have the guidance and instruction of our fine coaches and faculty. Good luck or bad luck, our teams learn the meaning and practice, the traits of good sportsmanship and teamwork which will always be of value to them. SWIMMING Row 1: D, Halverson, I. Flood, I. Long. The Girls' Athletic Association, shortened to G.A.A., had a very busy year. The highlights of G.A.A. this year were the initiation banquet held in the cafeteria and served by the football squad, a winter skating party, and a bowling tournament. In the fall, the girls take part in Hiking, Bowling, and Riflle Club. In the winter the activities are Bowling, Rifle Club, Apparatus Club, Fencing, and Basketball. When spring comes, thc girls change their whole routine again and take part in Archery, Horseback Riding, Softball, and Tennis, in which they have a tournament. , . 9 f . i x i - in i :Q not 1 . , . , Raw 1: M.
