An operetta Two Weeks With Pay was given on Apr. 6 and 7. Most of the songs were taken from famous Broadway shows, but one of the songs, 'CaII The Manager, I Resign, was an original by Miss Kenmore. The operetta was a huge success. A beautiful Christmas Pageant, which included a dramatization of The Night Before Christmas by the choir, a candlelight procession, and a solo Ave Maria by Genevieve Rangel, was presented. The music department also participated in the St. Paul Pageant, A Mother's Day banquet, a Memorial Day assembly, and an Armistice Day program. This is Miss Kenmore's first year here at MA and it has Page thirty-eight Band burger. Cheerleaders Front row: J. Webster, J, Divine B. Schanhaar, C. Durand, S. Arget singer, J. Nicoletti, V. He has gone to the various grade schools and has begun training grade school students in preparation for the Band. MA's own Band has played for assemblies and football games. A B band has been formed also. The cheerleaders, under the direction of Shirley Argetsinger, have played a very important part in sports this year. Clyde Durand, Shirley Argetsinger, Barbara Vassar, and Virginia Sauro, graduating Seniors, will be missed at the games next year. They've been a swell bunch of kids to work with and I know we'II have a good team next year, stated head cheerleader Shirley. Row 'I-C. Schipp, V. Erickson, L. Pheneger, G. Bryan, J. The Mechanic Arts basketball squad, under the guidance of Coach Al Gus Sundberg for The second year, wound up their 1948-49 cage season not faring so badly. A Eve won, four lost record was not so bad for a quint who didn't hit their stride until mid-season. There has been many a bright spot in the past season, and none will forget the blistering rally the Blue and White clad boys put on against a hot Wilson crew in The third game of The season. Trail- ing by 34-17 at half Time, and considered all but beaten then, They Turned loose a fine line attack to pull up to 46-44 with Two minutes to go, but They died out and were finally beaten 52-44. The finest hour came when the Trainers knocked oFf Washington's highly ranked Prexies, 29-21. Using a beautiful brand of ball control and completely dominating The backboards, The Downtown squad completely outclassed the powerful Presidents. The Trainers kept right on rolling as Murray's hard Page fifty-two luck Pilots fell before the Trainers, 38-21. Using some brilliant fast-breaks and some razzle-dazzle ball handling, Coach Sundberg's boys ran To a 22-9 halftime advantage, and Then coasted the rest of the way, occasionally using some long range sniping to keep the Pilots' attack stalled. The Trainers closed the conference race by one of the most thrilling finishes to game seen in high school circles for ci long time. Opening up against Central's Minutemen, they found the Lexington Avenue cagers first a little Too hot to handle, as they slipped behind 20-10. Coach Sundberg's boys then swung into a zone defense and started mixing ball control with a fast break, and brought the count up to 25-22 at half time, a first half which had the fans sitting on the edge of their seats. In the second half, history was made. Trailing 42-33 at the end of the third period, the Trainers started to move, as Sundberg's lads hit from all over the court to knot it up 46-46 and force the Blue and White Cagers Have l-lot and Cold Season A Basketball Row 'l-P. The Trainers drew Washington in the playoffs but couldn't put on a repeat performance, bowing out 37-25. The following Seniors wound up their cage careers at MA: Jerry Scherek, Ray Presley, Mel Goss, Tom Burke, Wendell Baehr, Richard Olson, and Pat Farrell. Coach Gus Sundberg has high hopes for next year's basketball team. The reasons for his hopes are mainly that Gene White and George Kamrath, two of lVlA's regulars on this year's Hve, will be returning. Coming up to supplant these boys will be such potential regulars as Chuck Johnson, Jim Robinson, Chuck Todora, Joe Ray, and Maceo Buford. Good luck, Gus! Ford, With one of The biggest turnouts in The history of Mechanic Arts hockey, Biff Adams molded to- gether a fairly good team this year with a record of three won, Three lost, and one tied. He has built a strong crew for the coming year. The Blue and White ice-men showed great promise This year by defeating three of the leading teams in the city conference-Wilson, 4-2, Washington, 4-2, and Cen- tral, 2-i. Best of all the Trainers tied Murray, 2-2, Murray was the team That represented St. Paul, and made a good showing in the State Tournament. Don Barthol, Carl Younghans, and Mike Roman- chuk will graduate this June. There will be eight returning lettermen next year as a nucleus for the team. They are: Bill Thurmer, Sam Crea, Don Pnew- ski, Jerry Isaacs, Lester Mekoli, Dick Johnson, Merl Marks, and Gene Wilwert. After a bad season, MA swimming team ended up in last place. Despite this fact, several mermen made an excellent showing at the Twin City meet. Outstanding among These were Bob Doane, Howie Brandi, and Dick Kill. Doane took third place with Brandl following him with a fourth position in the fancy diving competition. Kill managed to gain a fifth place in the 220 yard race. With these three boys, all letter winners, and Ken Barklund, next season's team should place high in the City. Page ffty five 1 Golf, Cross Country, Tennis Bank on Veterans Poge fifty-six Golf A. Biff Adams who coached the track team last year will now concentrate on his football line and hockey teams. With several returning lettermen ,the team will probably prove to be the team to beat in the conference. The T949 golf team, which is coached by Frank O'Rourke, with four letter winners back will also be an experienced team. Returning are Maceo Buford, Arnie Groebner, Bruce Williams, and Captain Tom Burke. Cross Country, another sport which often catches little attention, is becoming a fovorite with some Trainer long distance runners. The tennis team with five members will undoubt- edly become more popular as time goes on. With several returning lettermen from a green, but strong T948 baseball team, which reached the finals of the playoffs, the Trainers will probably Hnish high in the standings this year, The Trainers ended the '48 season with a five won and four lost record for 4th place in the standings. In the playoffs the squad won three games in three days, then lost to Washington, whom they had previously beaten in the conference. The Trainers, however, will miss the services of the ace of their mound staff, Ed Sandusky. Another pitcher in the ranks was Don Pattock. Joe Nash, outfielder, Pat Crea, infielder, Tony Philippi, catcher, and Mike Leopold, outfielder, will also be missing from the T949 Trainer roster. Page l l fifty-seven Aspirants and Winners of M .fs .ye - , w ' The Girls' M Club is one ot the most active club. at MA. Each year it elects a new set ot othcers chosen by the members. These girls are the ones who have previously worked in the Girls' Athletic Association tor the points which enable them to become members ot the M Club. They are eligible to become members atter earning l,OOO points. So many points are allowed to reach sport. For instance, it a girl happened to be good and get on a cham- pionship basketball team, it rated her IOO points. The same goes tor volleyball, baseball, and tennis. These also count toward the letter which is very important to all the GAA girls. Though the M club is made up of girls who have earned their points, it they care to they can work tor an All-City seal. This seal is earned by retereeing tor the Freshman and Sophomore gym classes during study peroids. The M club is worthwhile because it will furnish many fond memories long atter school days are over. Let's get out on the floor! These words are uttered by the class leaders in the gym classes. The girls who are the class leaders have the duties ot taking roll call, a job in itselt. They also have the iob ot choosing among the girls whom they con- sider the best players tor basketball, baseball, and volleyball. Another ot their iobs is to take care ot the locker rooms and keep them up to par and also check on showers. On days when exercises are on the schedule, the class leaders are right on their toes. One can hear the steady rhythm of i-2-3-4 and the tapping of feet on the gym floor. Girl Students Co Athletic . . . , 1 it 1 as Did someone say dancing? You bet they have dancing at MA. It is especially coached by Mrs. Ransier. The gym leaders are her valued helpers. They assist in teaching the kids how to polka, shot- tishe, and iive while one ot the girls, some who are very talented, tickles the ivory and set dozen of teet to dancing. The gym leaders are the gals who take over on playday. The gym has a large variety ot sporting equipment. They have floor shuftleboard, ping-pong, ropes tor iump rope, and badminton. This equip- ment includes a miniature bowling alley, used by Mrs. Ransier to teach scoring in bowling. Page fifty nine Everyday ls Playday for Girls at Mechanics in the top picture is one ot the gym classes playing baseball on a clear spring clay. This is one sport which proves to be popular among the girls in the gym. Among other sports which prove to be popular with these ambitious and athletic gym girls are basketball, volleyball, tennis, and bowling. In the bottom picture we have ot all things, a girls' football team. This was put on in an assembly during the tootball season by the lvl club girls. Mechanic Arts against Harding. Mechanics won, oi course. The girls were so excited about the game Page sixty that they forgot about the bruises they received. The nurses had quite a few minor injuries to cure after that assembly. Some suttered bruised noses, a bruised knee, and one suttered a broken toe. Others received minor scratches and bruises. Besides learning how to play tootball, basketball, volleyball, and other games, the girls are really learning how to bowl. Mrs, Ransier has a minia- ture bowling alley which has ten pins and a marble to knock them down with, This device is mostly used to teach the girls how to score. Congratulations M. A. l-l. S.
