Mr. J. W. Smith, present prin- cipal of Mechanic Arts, is shown presenting Tom Davis of the class of l896, with a diploma that is fifty years overdue. Mr. Davis is accompanied by Robert McCleary, left and Oscar Johnson, two other graduates of the same class. Mr. Smith planned a surprise ceremony when he realized that Mr. Davis had not received his diploma, because he had had to leave town prior to graduation. Tom Davis was bewildered and delighted upon receiving the covet- ed diploma, while Mr. Smith stood looking on with a pleased grin on his face. mm' ' ' Educator Naturalist and Author These words describe Mr Dietrich Lange second principal of Mechanic Arts Besides being an educator he wrote many boys books showing his great love for the outdoors His books are still popu lar vxith boys After being principal of MA for 23 years Mr Lange was appointed nature study su pervisor for the grade schools and iunior high because of his outstanding work as an author and authority on nature subiects. Shown laying the corner stone of the new Mechanic Arts is Mr. George Weit- brecht, founder and first principal of MA. His .sayingsz Get in the game and Don't be a quitte-r have become slogans of the school. He was also founder of the Mechanic Arts course that required each student to carry four solids and two shop classes which would fit him for the industrial as well as the social world. i

There were only l4 in The hrsT graduaTing class, buT The enrollrnenT rapidly increased unTil even The sTudenT populace expressed Their need Tor a new school in Their hrsT school song, LeT's Make lvle- chanics Large, Boys. ln l9lO, The cornersTone was laid and when The new school opened in l9l l, 600 eager sTudenTs in- vaded The halls and Took possession of The desks. Through The doors oT The school have passed cham- pions in every Tield, scholasTic and aThleTic. These sTudenTs received Their TundanienTal Training aT lvie- chanics where They learned The True meaning oT Treedorn and good sporTsnwanship. Under The leadership oT Three remarkable prin- cipals, lvlechanics has grown To be The second largesT school in ST. Paul.
