If K! , ,x 'x V. x lillllfllllllll HE free and independent Republic of Mechanic Arts! When the founder of our school created this familiar saying, he was not expressing himself in idle words. To him it embodied the true character and purpose of Mechanic Arts. Through the years the pupils became so imbued with this ideal of democracy that it became a vital force in preparing them for true democratic living in a larger republic. Moreover, the school had a peculiar location in the down-town district of our city. It had practically no corn- munity limitations. It offered an opportunity to work with the hands as Well as the head. What was true of Mechanics in those early days is even a true republic. With this thought in mind, we have chosen the theme of our twenty-fourth 42 ore marked today. lt has become a virtual melting pot, We want you to feel, as you read this book, the demo- cratic spirit which prevails throughout our school, a spirit which is shared by the teachers and the pupils alikep a spirit which has encouraged self-expression and individuality and Pg fostered cooperation and tolerance.
