Students and faculty alike agree that he has never made a decision that was not in the basic interest of all concerned. Mrs. Fannie Warren Mrs. Peggy Dudley Dietician Secretary Two of the most important members of the administrative staff are the office secretary and the dietician. All through the school year these ladies perform their respective tasks with expertness and diligence. The clockwork adminis- tration of our school is partially a re- sult of the proficiency of these two. From left to right: Elizabeth Albright. Judy McGee, Franklin Child- ress, James Wells, Pat Heath. Each school day the rural students are transported to and from school by our bus drivers. That the students are on time for the first classes can be at- tributed to the efficiency and prompt- ness of the five student drivers shown at left. r SENIORS JACQUELINE SANDRA ALLRED Booger F. H. The purpose of this department is to develop the student's communication and reading skills through the study of lan- guage and literature. Four years of English are required of every student, as well as two years pre- ceding high school, for graduation. Two years of French and two years of Latin are available to college preparatory stu- dents. Ronnie Oakley and George Braxton, senior French stu- dents, display visual material which made class more in- teresting. Individual projects in French give the student an opportunity to learn the art and culture of France. Larry Sykes, a junior, demonstrates his model of the guillotine. The sophomore Latin class is making derivative trees. 30 Reading is encouraged in all fields of study. These juniors, Bonnie Castle and Bill Henderson, use book reports of others as suggestions for further reading. Sophomore tnglish students - Billy Mace, Judy Vogler, Margaret Cole, and Nelson Clark -find that diagramming is a good method of studying the fundamentals of grammar. SCIENCE Our high school offers three major areas of study in the sciences. These include general science, biology, and chemistry. All freshmen boys are required to take general science. Biology plus a second science is necessary for graduation for both boys and girls. Background for these courses is acquired in the gen- eral science program of the junior high school. The junior high school students found projects in science very interesting. June Walker displays her Diorama of Prehistoric Days. Examining the external features of the grasshopper before their dissection of the specimen are Margaret Cole and Judy Vogler. Three seniors, W.Y. Jobe, Jay Harris, and Allen Rhodes, work on their chemistry projects during after- school hours. Demonstrating the uses of simple machines are four ninth graders, Jimmy Murray, Steve York, Ricky Dudley, and Johnny Self. MATHEMATICS The mathematics program in our school consists of instruction in algebra, plane geometry, physics, and general mathematics. It is designed to give the student a fundamental knowledge of mathematical principles. Two years of algebra and one year of plane geometry are open primarily to college preparatory students and are set up to provide a basis for further work in mathe- matics. The general mathematics courses provide skills that can be used in the world of work. Individual instruction from Mr. Jack McFayden aids a student in solving his problem in the algebra class. Three ninth grade mathematics students, Gene Allen, Barbara Edgerton, and Gary Holt, prepare board work for presentation to the class. Students in physics, Larry Kirkpatrick, Jackie Cheek, and Kenneth Wilkinson, discuss the four-cycled engine and the aid of charts. SOCIAL SCIENCE The Social Science Department’s objective is to provide the student with a general knowledge of the social sciences. Courses in history, geography, civics, economics and sociology, and Bible are available. U.S. History is a requirement for graduation. Economics and so- ciology is a requisite for college preparatory stu- dents. A good background in these courses is an asset in any vocation. Bible, a new addition to our curriculum, requires many hours of note taking. Jackie Christopher shows his world his- tory project, a map of ancient Europe. On the project his printing is done in Latin. Town clerk, Mr. Clyde Gardner, explains ’’town Gail Smith quizzes two other geography students, government to a group of interested sociology stu- Henry Heath and Marvin Collins, dents. 34 Allen Rhodes, Redmond Oakley, and Kenneth Thomas discuss police activities with Chief D. W. Smith for a report to sociology class. Three eighth grade students, Jimmy Hill, Minnie Sue Fox, and Faye Smith, use the globe in their study of geography. Frances Adams leads a dis- cussion in civics class. I COMMERCIAL EDUCATION Courses in the Commercial Department include instruction in shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping. It is the aim of this department to instill in students the basic skills and concepts that will aid them in the field of business. It also gives non- commercial students instruction in certain phases of business education that will aid them in other pursuits. Betty Evans, Margaret Parker, Cathy Westbrook, and Doris Byrd, four bookkeeping students, work on their practice sets. Learning to use business machines is part of the office practice course. Jannette Young and Florence Gravitte are operating the Rexograph machine. Florence Gravitte, Dorothy Wynn, Jannette Young, and Mary Elizabeth Thornton, senior typing students, type materials for various members of the faculty, thus using their skill for useful purposes. DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS The Department of Diversified Occupations permits students to come to school in the morning and work in th« afternoon. These students acquire on-the-job ex- perience and take courses in school which are connected with their chosen vocations. An apprentice in cabinet making, Kenneth Thomas, is pictured on the job. HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics is offered to all girls, and at least one course is required of girls for graduation. The departments purpose is the teaching of the domestic arts. Sewing, a new course to most ninth graders, is approached with enthusiasm by Judy James, Carol Terrell, Kay Kimbro, and Linda Richmond. Mary Ann Riley, standing before her class, speaks on Why I Am Going to High School. Discussing United Nations problems for the World Peace Study and Speaking Contest are a few members of the speech class. SPEECH The speech class gives the student a knowledge of the fundamentals of public speaking through a program of study and practice. A few stu- dents participate in national and state contests such as the Voice of Demo- cracy and My True Security programs. All students take part in classroom debates and speeches. Ted Thompson speaks for the negative on the query: Resolved That the United States Should Adopt the Essential Features of the British System of Education. Preparing a bulletin board on personal care are these junior high health students -- Cleon Ashley, Dot Faucette, Linda Edwards, Mary Mercer, Jackie Sykes, and Tim Lynch. Linda Aulbert, Anne Muse, and Linda Richmond are comparing pictorial information with that in the text. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION To build a greater understanding of the concepts of personal hygiene and to acquaint the students with the various forms of sports and exercise are the primary objectives of this department. Through a program of classroom instruction and physical activity these objectives are reached. The freshmen course is a requirement of both boys and girls for graduation. In the junior high school more attentionis given to actual participation in sports than in the history and development. One purpose of the physical education program is the development of character. Pictured are a group of students as they participate in activities designed to achieve this training. MUSIC Carol Collins accompanies members of the music class as they rehearse their radio program. Music instruction in the Junior High School is given to all students. In the Senior High School, music is optional. The courses are intended to give a broad- er musical understanding and appre- ciation. COACHING STAFF Under the expert coaching of Head Coach Archie Walker, with his very capable assis- tants, the Tigers won the Mid-State Confer- ence Championship for the fourth consecutive year. Coach Walker's main assistant was the energetic figure of Coach Joe Widenhouse. Developing the future Tigers was the task of Coach Charles Maynard. These three men, combining skills and putting their efforts into molding the material at Mebane High, produced a great team, one whose record is proof of the the superb coaching staff behind them. blsf This year twelve Mebane footballers, pictured at left, played their last game. Outstanding linebacker, Mickey Ter- rell (12), moves in for the kill in the de- cisive game with Haw River. Coach Walker’s switch of Buster Evans from tackle to fullback proved to be a good move. Evans is shown here bulling his way into the end zone against Allen Jay. An unidentified Tiger falls into the end zone for a score against Ker- nersville in the State Play-Offs. Tommy Amick (20), fleet halfback, is shown here on a 40 yard scamper a- gainst Kernersville. Mebane defeated the Red Raiders 21-12. Carver, muscles his way up for a timely basket aid- ing us to defeat Pleasant Grove in the County Tournament. 47 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girl's team posted an over-all 9-10 record, finishing in 6th place in the conference. This re- cord is not indicative of their power. On given nights they were invincible, while they always posed a threat. They upset such first division teams as Altamahaw-Ossipee, Sylvan and Haw River. First Row: K. Kimbro, B. Sykes, F. Payne, P. Satterfield, Captain; N. Maultsby, S. Farthing. Second Row: L. B. James.
