Cracks Of Zim: HIS T O RY In the fall of 1951, our large Freshman class slowly pushed our way into the bewildering rush of our high schoolcareer. There to guide us over the first rough spots of high school life were Miss Rachel Jones and Mr. George Shackel- ford as our homeroom teachers. We elected that year as our class presidents, Bobby Rice and Marshall Southern and as our Student Council representatives, James Andrews and John Lynch. Our Freshman year passed quickly with new studies, class parties,Teen Age Club, club activities and just plain fun. ln May we elected Esther Payne,Jerry Foster, Mickie Crumpler, and Marshall South- ern as May Court attendants. After a full summer we resumed our studies as Sophomores in September, 1952. Our sponsors were Mrs. Bill Abernathy and Mr. Archie Walker. That year we had Jean Nichols and James Andrews as class presidents and Bobby Riggs and Bill Wilkinson as our representatives to the Student Council. Spring brought forth the election of May Court attendants, who were Marcille Van Liere, John Lynch, Ellen Turner, and Bill Wilkinson. We ended our Sophomore year with a party at Burlington Park and a visit to Dr. McDade's museum. We could hardly believe that we had finished our second year in high school. As Juniors in 1953, we were showered with many new responsibilities. Mrs. Curtis Clark and Mr. Elmo Allgood directed us in publishing the Hi-Times, selling magazines, planning the Junior-Senior Banquet, ordering class rings, as well as keeping up with our studies. John Lynch and Jack Keasler were cho- sen as presidents of our classes. Marcille Van Liere served as Vice-President of the Student Council with Hilda Faucette and John Lynch as our Council rep- resentatives. Bill Wilkinson was elected editor of the Hi-Times. We were proud of the way our class worked together on the Junior-Senior Banquet and we glow- ed with happiness on the night of March 19 when our Oriental Banquet was a suc- cess. That year our May Day attendants were Patricia Davis and Libby Smith with James Andrews and Bryan Holt as their escorts. Marcille Van Liere and Bill Wilkinson were awarded the honors of being our representatives to Girls' and Boys'States. As the sun rose on graduation day it found us furiously Work- ing to finish our flower arches under which the Seniors would soon be marching, Our farewell song to the Seniors was a sad one for we realized that along with losing some of our dearestfriends we were leaving behind one of our most won- derful years in high school. Our marshals were Bill Wilkinson, Chief: Anne Strickland, Marcille Van Liereg Ellen Turner, Bobby Riggs: Caudell Clark and John Lynch. The long awaited time had arrived - the fall of 1954. At last we were Seniors' For our lastmemorable year we were sponsored by a new member of the faculty,Miss Betty Jo l-lill,and our dear friend from the Junior Class, Mrs. Curtis Clark. There were many elections to be held. Jean Nichols was chosen as president of our Senior Class and Esther Payne and Jean Nichols were our Student Council representatives,al ong with Marcille Van Liere who was Presi- dent of the StudentBody, Bill Wilkinson was elected editor-in-chief of the Fur- macotto. ln October Esther Payne was croumed queen of the Home Coming Fes- tivities. Nfter the Christmas holidays our roles as Seniors lecame even more complicated. We elected superlatives, chose our mascots, selected our Senior Play, ordered our invitations and calling cards, were measured for our caps and gowns and worked diligently on the Furmacotto. We certainly enjoyed pausing for a while on March Z5 to attend a very nice Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance given for us by the Juniors. After the Banquet we resumed our work on the Senior play, ' Double Door and presented it on April ZZ. When the play work was done we rushed into preparation for May Day Exercises. Esther Payne and Bryan Holt were elected to reign as queen and king with Libby Atkins as maid of honor and Woody Wilkerson as her escort. ln May the final week began to unfold as we listened to an inspiring Bacc- alaureate sermon. Finally we donned our caps and gowns and marched down the aisle of our auditorium for the last time as students of Mebane High School. The dc-or to the world lay before us, and the keys, our cherished diplomas, were in our hands.
