V, , Q as me irlrrg 'Board, all aboard the Tiger Express in preparation for the sixth annual run of the FURMACOTTO, As the wheels go clickety-clacking down the tracks you will see scenes to remind you of your years at Mebane High School. Here pictured are your teachers, your classmates, and scenes from your activities and sports. You will recall also, some ofthe smaller incidents--the blue Mon- days, the school bell at the end ofthe day, the commotion of classes changing, assembly on Thursday, the little disagreements, the cheers at ball games, and others, You will think of smiles and of tears, for here you have lived days of happiness and sorrow, work and play. Some of your experiences have been big, some have been small, but all have been a part of your year in Mebane High School, and all have played a part in preparing you to engineer your trains of life. Ai 'Q ' nu il ggi- I I EOR: THE SEAT OE HONOR ON THE TIGER EXPRESS, I I FROM: THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1955 ' TO: MRS. MARY E, ILOUJ CLARK I I I ATNS. DEDICATION We give you the seat of honor on the Tiger Express. We have found you to be one of the most helpful persons we have ever knownp for whether our problems have been large or small, you have always given freely of your time to help us solve them. Your friendly smile and cheerful guidance as the Director of the Information Bureau during our Junior and Senior travels are examples which we can never forget. You mean more to us than we know how to express--we hope to show you our appreciation by our deeds rather than by our words. We will try to repay you in a small way through Ol-11' services to others and hope you will be proud of us. '5 , , N 'IN 5 V , f MRS, DOROTHY SUTTON Meredith College Music Director MRS. X V I SENIORS Cracks Of Zim: HIS T O RY In the fall of 1951, our large Freshman class slowly pushed our way into the bewildering rush of our high schoolcareer. There to guide us over the first rough spots of high school life were Miss Rachel Jones and Mr. George Shackel- ford as our homeroom teachers. We elected that year as our class presidents, Bobby Rice and Marshall Southern and as our Student Council representatives, James Andrews and John Lynch. Our Freshman year passed quickly with new studies, class parties,Teen Age Club, club activities and just plain fun. ln May we elected Esther Payne,Jerry Foster, Mickie Crumpler, and Marshall South- ern as May Court attendants. After a full summer we resumed our studies as Sophomores in September, 1952. Our sponsors were Mrs. Bill Abernathy and Mr. Archie Walker. That year we had Jean Nichols and James Andrews as class presidents and Bobby Riggs and Bill Wilkinson as our representatives to the Student Council. Spring brought forth the election of May Court attendants, who were Marcille Van Liere, John Lynch, Ellen Turner, and Bill Wilkinson. We ended our Sophomore year with a party at Burlington Park and a visit to Dr. McDade's museum. We could hardly believe that we had finished our second year in high school. As Juniors in 1953, we were showered with many new responsibilities. Mrs. Curtis Clark and Mr. Elmo Allgood directed us in publishing the Hi-Times, selling magazines, planning the Junior-Senior Banquet, ordering class rings, as well as keeping up with our studies. John Lynch and Jack Keasler were cho- sen as presidents of our classes. Marcille Van Liere served as Vice-President of the Student Council with Hilda Faucette and John Lynch as our Council rep- resentatives. Bill Wilkinson was elected editor of the Hi-Times. We were proud of the way our class worked together on the Junior-Senior Banquet and we glow- ed with happiness on the night of March 19 when our Oriental Banquet was a suc- cess. That year our May Day attendants were Patricia Davis and Libby Smith with James Andrews and Bryan Holt as their escorts. Marcille Van Liere and Bill Wilkinson were awarded the honors of being our representatives to Girls' and Boys'States. As the sun rose on graduation day it found us furiously Work- ing to finish our flower arches under which the Seniors would soon be marching, Our farewell song to the Seniors was a sad one for we realized that along with losing some of our dearestfriends we were leaving behind one of our most won- derful years in high school. Our marshals were Bill Wilkinson, Chief: Anne Strickland, Marcille Van Liereg Ellen Turner, Bobby Riggs: Caudell Clark and John Lynch. The long awaited time had arrived - the fall of 1954. At last we were Seniors' For our lastmemorable year we were sponsored by a new member of the faculty,Miss Betty Jo l-lill,and our dear friend from the Junior Class, Mrs. Curtis Clark. There were many elections to be held. Jean Nichols was chosen as president of our Senior Class and Esther Payne and Jean Nichols were our Student Council representatives,al ong with Marcille Van Liere who was Presi- dent of the StudentBody, Bill Wilkinson was elected editor-in-chief of the Fur- macotto. ln October Esther Payne was croumed queen of the Home Coming Fes- tivities. Nfter the Christmas holidays our roles as Seniors lecame even more complicated. We elected superlatives, chose our mascots, selected our Senior Play, ordered our invitations and calling cards, were measured for our caps and gowns and worked diligently on the Furmacotto. We certainly enjoyed pausing for a while on March Z5 to attend a very nice Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance given for us by the Juniors. After the Banquet we resumed our work on the Senior play, ' Double Door and presented it on April ZZ. When the play work was done we rushed into preparation for May Day Exercises. Esther Payne and Bryan Holt were elected to reign as queen and king with Libby Atkins as maid of honor and Woody Wilkerson as her escort. ln May the final week began to unfold as we listened to an inspiring Bacc- alaureate sermon. Finally we donned our caps and gowns and marched down the aisle of our auditorium for the last time as students of Mebane High School. The dc-or to the world lay before us, and the keys, our cherished diplomas, were in our hands. They spend hours exploring the train, asking questions, and congregating in the club car to gossip. Here are the notes taken by the old class secretary, Libby Atkins: Three girls from the class are teaching school--Jean Nichols, the third grade, JoAnn Yancey, home economicsg and Esther Payne, physical education fher girls just won another championshipl. After brief military services, James Workman and Woodrow Wilkerson started farming and are raising that old nicotine weed. On our color television sets,Fred Carter has been seen as the star of the Washington Redskins. JoAnn McAdams, Libby Atkins, Billie Jean Smith, Rosalie Shields, Bar- bara Neville, and Hilda Faucette have opened Mebane's first college, Better Sec- retaries Business School. Ellen Turner is working at the Methodist Church as secretary to the Min- ister, Tommy Loftis. Thege girls, Phyllis Hawkins, Pat Garrett, Mary Ellen Lewis, and Mary Ellen Atkins have become bridge fiends as an escape from the labors of child care. The class of '55 also produced two brush pushers g Kae Nelson, a com- mercial artist, and Ray Jenkins, a house painter. Elbert Garner, Benny Murphy, William Mclaaurin, and Richard Patterson are now general superintendents in Jack Keasler's textile mill down in South Carolina--he finally made it back home. Recently opened was The Business Bureau , managed by Bill Wilkinson and Bobby Riggs. The office is kept cheerful throughout the day by the bundle of joy , Rose Marie Thornton. Employed by the state, Bobby Jones was found to be a forester and Norma Kay Shoe, a trouble shooter for the S. B. l. Shirley Andrews and Betty Jean Sykes, ticket girls at the Bijou Theatre, have for their manager Bobby Scarlett. John Lynchis a psycho-analyst in the Navy, and has been to Europe to see the Louvre. Someone had seen a huge pasture with a number of dairy cows. The mail- box in the corner read Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Wilson. Could the Mrs. be Anne Strickland 7 Larry Wilkinson owns a furniture factory and is manufacturing the fur- niture which Charlotte Thomas designs. Uncle Sam'5 recruiting officer in the Mebane area is Patsy Brown. Mebane also has quite a few merchants from the class--Marshall Southern runs a feed mill, James Andrews,a drug store, and Phil Smith and Howard Lee are partners in a supermarket. Ophelia Holt and Helen Langley are operating a beauty shop. Randy's Record Shop, previously heard over station WCKY, has been re' placed by Freddie Jobe and the Cook's Store Boys. Though we were worried a little about Marcille Van Liere when she couldn 't decide on a career for herself, she at last has become North Carolina's first woman Senator. Bryan Holt and Bobby Rice now are pilots for Eastern Airlines with Re- becca Patterson and Janet Morris for their efficient stewardesses. Cleo Graves was found assisting Mebane's number one dentist, Dr. Cau- dell Clark.
