“i .-o—— a-—■ CLASS HISTORY yrf r t r wrT'T' +A AM 1 One bright Septenber morning in 1?36, forty-eight boys and girls started on the Me'oane High School Rainbow Tail, which promised for them the pot of golden learning at its foot. The chief trumpeter. Bill Huprnan sounded the marching orders. However, some of these travelers failed to foresee the diffi- culties of the trail. So the end of this first mile of the High School treck found their number sadly reduced. As this smaller band faced the second mile of the trail, they boasted the title of “Sophomores. This time the leaders were Mary Carter, Laurie Jones, and Oma T. Holt. So much did the entire group now feel its superiority, that not even the warnings of the older trail leaders, the Faculty, impressed them with the importance of marching on. Much dilly-dal- lying 'was the result. Some of the really wise ones, however, trudged bravely along, and most of them passed to the estate of Juniors. The Junior Trail became rough indeed, but the prospect ahead was alluring. The end of the trail seemed near, and the pace was quickened under the leadership of Mary Carter. Don Yorke, and Thelma Al- len. This year the band had the pleasure of enter- taining the class of '39 at the Mebane High Schocl Circus on March 31« What funI By far the most important part of the treck was the fourth mile. Dignified Seniors at last, lead by Eill Huprnan, Ruth Warren, Betty White, and Kath- leen Lewis, who walked more sturdily because the pot of gold was closer than ever. Its golden gleam could almost be seen but all knew that Eternal Vig- ilance was the price of its possession, and Grad- uation became the watchword. However, pleasures sometimes lured the travelers. Best of all was the sumptuous banquet given to the Seniors by their run- ners-up, the Juniors. And now as the triumphant treckers are about.to receive the pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow Trail, they wish to pause long enough to say, All Hail to the first volume of The Trumpet , to the Mebane Hi-Lights, and to the Student Council. To these and all they would say, The trail does not really end here but merely divides. One trail beckons to college and the other to life and service. Class Historiam b ;1
