Cur motto old; Regard the End , Will aid to each pal lend; With eyes upon Rainbow Trail We'll never, never fail. i .-o—— a-—■ CLASS HISTORY yrf r t r wrT'T' +A AM 1 One bright Septenber morning in 1?36, forty-eight boys and girls started on the Me'oane High School Rainbow Tail, which promised for them the pot of golden learning at its foot. The chief trumpeter. Bill Huprnan sounded the marching orders. However, some of these travelers failed to foresee the diffi- culties of the trail. So the end of this first mile of the High School treck found their number sadly reduced. As this smaller band faced the second mile of the trail, they boasted the title of “Sophomores. This time the leaders were Mary Carter, Laurie Jones, and Oma T. Holt. So much did the entire group now feel its superiority, that not even the warnings of the older trail leaders, the Faculty, impressed them with the importance of marching on. Much dilly-dal- lying 'was the result. Some of the really wise ones, however, trudged bravely along, and most of them passed to the estate of Juniors. The Junior Trail became rough indeed, but the prospect ahead was alluring. The end of the trail seemed near, and the pace was quickened under the leadership of Mary Carter. Don Yorke, and Thelma Al- len. This year the band had the pleasure of enter- taining the class of '39 at the Mebane High Schocl Circus on March 31« What funI By far the most important part of the treck was the fourth mile. Dignified Seniors at last, lead by Eill Huprnan, Ruth Warren, Betty White, and Kath- leen Lewis, who walked more sturdily because the pot of gold was closer than ever. Its golden gleam could almost be seen but all knew that Eternal Vig- ilance was the price of its possession, and Grad- uation became the watchword. However, pleasures sometimes lured the travelers. Best of all was the sumptuous banquet given to the Seniors by their run- ners-up, the Juniors. And now as the triumphant treckers are about.to receive the pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow Trail, they wish to pause long enough to say, All Hail to the first volume of The Trumpet , to the Mebane Hi-Lights, and to the Student Council. To these and all they would say, The trail does not really end here but merely divides. One trail beckons to college and the other to life and service. He handed me a golden clock-like gadget, saying: Turn to any year you wish and the future of your class metes will be revealed to you. I turned the dial to the yeor 1950, and lol like Sch- rooge and his ghost, I am transported to distant parts, neither distance nor walls are obstacles. I am looking on a pretty cottage near Paris. As a tall matronly woman comes to the door, I recog- nize Kathleen Lewis, who has married a Frenchman instead of Bernard McDade as we predicted. LTiere am I now? I do believe I am back in Me- bace, for there is the new Post Office building of 1940. Three demure ladies are passing by. I re- cognize Florene Staley, Aina Ellis, and Frances Holt, who are new members of the Faculty of M. H. S. As I walk on about town, I come upon a strange scene. Bernard Mcdade and Hill Hupman are hard at work. They have united the laundry and the coal business. Bernard is wearing a torn shirt, while Bill’s hands, black with coal dust, show evidence of manual labor. The scene changes. This is Cheek’s Crossing. Laurie Jones is just coming out of a large build- ing and I learn that he is now president of the Jones Rattrao Manufacturing Co. MyI but I have traveled fast time, for this is evidently the jungles of Africa. An old model school bus is approaching, and in it'are Don Yorke and Veulnnd Smith, our truck drivers of 1940. They are on an exploring expedition here in Africa. Lyi but this is a spooky place. There Are two men seated across the table from one another; Elll Corbett, the world's greatest Crystal Gazer is tolling Bobbie Fox what chances he will have with a new flame. And now the sky line of New York appears. The bright lights of Times Square flash out the follow- ing sign: The Ziegfield Follies presents BETTY WHITE, RUTH WARREN, AND DORIS YATES ’. ILSON in theiz famous humber, ‘TIE. CAROLINA T 1ST.' As I purchase a cipy of The New York Times for May 27, 1950f the following article meets my eye: Yale won a decided victory over Harvard yesterday in the last minute play. The victory was due to the strict training given the players by their coach, James Thomas. In another column I read; Dr Thelma Allen and Nurse Mary Carter have discovered a way for blind people to see by the use of the glass eye. They experimented on the three blind mice. Walking on down Fifth Avenue I come to Sak's and here I see Irene McDaniel. She is now a department store model; it looks as if her wish was granted. Her popularity in this capacity is evident to the passers by. Here I go. This must be Hillsboro. That looks like Oma Holt and Doris Mae Wilson in front of that Beauty Parlor. They look quite happy in the door way of their own little shop. And here on the step is a Mebane Enterprise.. Let me see what I can find in the social column, Edna Lou Jobe and Lucille Young have returned once more after winning a beauty contest at Atlantic City, I'm traveling again. Here are two pretty cott- ages side by side. As I draw near I recognize Glo- ria Barfield and Katie Hawkins as they talk over a small white fence.- I expected them to be in the eyes of the public, but they are happy homemakers. Once again I'm back in Mebane. I believe this is the Carolina Service Station—but no, this sign read3: DOT'S SUMMER RESORT. As I walk through the door I see Doris Christopher sitting at the cash register, evidently still single. , Class Prophetess ttJ7Z777TJ777.’7777.V. S ZTllLTZWN 1 — Y.
