' ' f ' 1141226 aw e lfllarrlnvll in Srninrz As you leave the halls of the school 'that has been your abode for the past four years, a June world lies at your feet. The congratulations of your friends in having completed the requirements for high school graduation are showered upon you. Yet bear in mind that June 4th marks a comrnencernent not an end. Whatever the community has given to you in many years of school life, it rightfully expects you to render to it again in terms of service to your fellow men. Go forth then and may you find that greatest happi- ness that con1es from unselfish achievement. As your days here together in study have given to you a great drive toward successful living, so will you find that study will do always. Of all fine things, an open mind, eagerly expectant of new discoveries, yet ever respecting the old, is the noblest, the rarest, and the most difiicult to achieve. So whether or not you are fortunate enough to go to college, find an opportunity somehow to be a student. The great things of life, in books and elsewhere, art, beauty and culture still say to you:- Grow old along with me! - The best is yet to be- The lastof life, for which the first was made I Our times are in his hand VVho saith, 'A whole I planned: Youth show but halfg trust Godg see all, Nor be afraid. This two-cast arrangement was used for the first time with marked success. The play concerned a wealthy family, stranded in their summer home without ser- vants who employ twenty-four persons, supposedly exiled Russian nobles, but who turn out to be a group of amateur actors. Of course there was a crook theme in which old masterpiece played, a leading part. No discriminations can be made as to which cast was the best as the laurels were evenly divided. - ..., ...... An aristocratic English family with several friends go on a yachting trip and are ship-wrecked. There the perfect butler takes complete command and the problems and circumstances which arise and the final working out of the situation after they are rescued, form one of the cleverest and most amusing of J. M. Barrie's plays. We consider this one of the most successful Senior plays that has been produced due to the complete cooperation of all those connected with it. CAST Catherine ..... TIPPEN Established something of a record when he gave Meadville High School three cham- pionships in major sports in two years. Besides branding himself as a class A coach, Mr. Tippen has won the admiration of many on account of the high morale he has established among the members of -both teams. His n1otto is Play hard but play square, which he has always insisted be carried out no matter what the outcome of the game might be. ASSISTANT COACH ALBERT BENDER A Al, besides being assistant football and basketball coach, is head track coach. The record of the track team being one which any coach might be proud of, winning every duel meet that it partook in and although they did not win at Erie, it was one of the few schools that broke into the scoring division. Al has many friends because of his quiet FACULTY' MANAGER RALPH THEURET Q Mr. Theuret is small, but this does not keep hin1 from fame. He was given Mr. Lorz's place as faculty manager, when Mr. Lorz took up a position in Buffalo. He immediately established a new plan for selling tickets that met with instant success. VVe hear that the reason there was no faculty basketball team was because Mr. Theuret would not play center. However, this is just a rumor and may be ungrounded. CHARLES JOHNSON, FOOTBALL MANAGER Chuck is a well liked fellow who is lacking in size but not in energy. Chosen as football manager because of his hard working qualities as assistant manager, he kept up the good work as manager, and as the result was one of the best Meadville Hi has had for some time. ' ' EDWARD BARNES, BASKETBALL MANAGER Ed is one of those big fellows that has a smile for everyone, while his hard work did much to make the season the success that it was. The game was poorly played throughout, and although the locals were able to come through, the chances of a second championship in as many years looked none too bright. The game was as lacking in stars as it was lacking in color, with no individual stand- ing out particularly brilliant. MEADVILLE-FARRELL In the second game of the season, in which the pre-game dope seemed to favor the visitors, Meadville Hi suffered a sudden change for the better, and succeeded in holding a highly praised Farell outnt to a 0-0 tie. The game started in much the same manner as the Union City skirmish, with the Red and Black showing up poorly. However, as the game progressed the locals showed some of the old light that carried them to a championship in 1927, the feature of the day being Duffy Weber's 25-yard run just as the whistle blew. John Wilson was placed at fullback, while Hogan's change from full to half seemed to have the desired effect, putting a greater punch in the backfield. Other noticeable work was that of Ham Brooks, VValter Brown, and Bob Unger, all performing well on the line. MEADVILLE-CORRY Proving that their stand against Farrell was not temporary, Meadville Hi romped all over a fighting Corry outfit, the final score giving some idea of the wide margin that sep- arated the respective ability of the two teams. The field was in a rather damp condition, which accounts for the many fumbles, otherwise the heads-up playing of the team con- tinued over from the week before. Weber proved to be the outstanding player, getting four touchdowns, all of which came as the result of long runs, the longest being about seventy yards. Hogan and Portfolio scored the other two six-pointers. Kent and Heffrin made their appearance for the first time in the garb of gridiron warriors, both showing up well. ' , MEADVILLE-NEW CASTLE - Playing one of the strongest high school teams of the year, Meadville Hi put up a highly commendable struggle, only to have the breaks against them, to lose by the score of 18-0, a score indicating a much greater difference in the teams than was actually the case. New Castle scored their first touchdown almost immediately after the game began, and here, it looked blue for the local gridders. In the second quarter, New Castle again scored in the lirst few minutes of play, and again were held for the remainder of the quarter. The third quarter was a Meadville quarter, the Red and Black coming dangerous- ly close to scoring several times, and causing New Castle quite a little worry. The Meadville gridders were able to hold the opposing team throughout the third quarter, and into the final minutes of the last period, but here New Castle completed a long forward pass to give them their third touchdown. The team showed up well as a whole, with no individual Stars, although Wilson was able to make substantial gains at full. MEADVILLE-SHARON A trifle over-confident in the first quarter, Meadville Hi spotted the Sharon eleven 21 points in the first quarter, when Sebastien and Pryts ran riot through the ranks of the local squad. However, the locals woke up and out-scored the Sharon Hi team through- out the rest of the game, but were unable to overcome the huge margin the Sharon team held. The entire Sharon backfield showed up well, but Sebastion and Pryts were the big noises. For Meadville, Weber, Hogan, Brooks and Goodman provided most of the brilliant plays, although after the iirst quarter none of the team played poorly. Weber made some broken field runs that would have 'done anyone credit, while Hogan smashed his way through the enemy's line for many nice gains. Brooks and Goodman were both on the receiving end of a couple of fine passes. lui' 11,1 .... ......, . ,.,..,.......... ........ ,........ .,,. - 1 gg - H- H -1 ' csln ' I - ,,- ,. 0-- ' ia f5l1v41?eSlB1M MEADVILLE-ALUMblI M. Alma Mater by the close score of 8-0. The starting lineup was composed almost entirely of second-string men, and it was during their stay in the game that the Alumni were able to put across their touchdown. As the first team men began their parade to their regular positions, the Alumni attack was checked, but six inches of mud and water and a much heavier opposing team were suflicient to check the charges of the local team. MEADVILLE-OIL CITY Completely outplaying the Blue and 'vVhite of Oil City, the Red and Black of M. H. S. crushed them in the first league game of the season by the decisive score of 35-0. VVeber's long unbroken field runs, Hogan's off-tackle spurts, and VVilson's center plunges turned what was doped to be a hard fought game into a foot race. Dashing as the backlield were, they owe much of their success to the efforts of the line, this portion of the team showing up exceptionally well, the whole seven of them lighting every second of the game, while Kuhn did something unusual for a center, when he caught an Oil City punt back of our line for one of our touchdowns. MEADVILLE-FRANKLIN Meadville Hi continued her slaughter of league opponents, when she completely squelched the Franklin Steam Roller by the top-heavy score of 44-12. Flash MC- Clintock, whose 75-yard run gave Franklin her first touchdown, made his 25 or 30 yard flashes, a constant threat to M. H. S's goal line. For Meadville, Hogan and VVeber pierced the Franklin line almost at will. while the line, led by Brooks and Kuhn, gave as they gave the previous week at Oil City. MEADVILLE-GREENVILLE Continuing their mad spurt down the home stretch, the Tippinites trounced Green- ville by the score of 63-0. Meadville's biggest quarter of the entire season was in the third quarter of this game, when they scored Z6 points, while in the last quarter, when the lineup was composed almost entirely of second string men, the locals crossed the enemy's goal twice. In this game, more than any game of the season, credit of the vic- tory goes to the line. H. S. dropped their third straight game when they lost to the former stars of the MEADVILLE-TITUSVILLE Meadville Hi had little trouble in defeating Titusville to clinch the Murphy Cup. This game was not as thrilling as some of the previous games, yet the results were very pleasing to the populace in general. Several men, such as Captain Barnard, 'iHam Brooks, Pickles Thompson, Gene Kuhn, John Wilson, Walter Brown, Ed Barnes, Art Simpson, and Bob Unger all finished up their football careers, while with this game Bob Roha, one of the valuable linemen who was injured earlier in the season, passed from the eligibility list. VVALTER STANTON, HEAD CI-IEERLEADER Stanton made his debute this year as head cheerleader, besides capably leading the cheers he also gave exhibitions between the halves of basketball games, by shooting in a few fancy ones from the middle of the floor. However, he got the cheers out of our throats, and much of the success of the teams may be laid to the work of Stanton and his colleagues. RAYMOND VANSLYKE Slats is the second of our cheerleaders. The first response to his plea for cheers is usually not as strong as his second one, as all the girls in the crowd are usually speech- less and charmed by his handsome face. 't ARTHUR M'CLEAN Art is usually the third man to call for a cheer. First Stanton, then Slats, then Art is the usual order in which they send up their call for noise, and go through the artis- tic motions. g Q5 1 A u l ' :ffI1QRe1lQIBlae Q, Qqxxxr W' , ... .... . if :E WEA nl' V ,Q Ili .1!.,1.. .ll ii' M 1 X: n 'L A l ' I -- - - , v nd 1 a - f o li 5 4 -5 -5 -2 :iz E: If : 5 E E 5 E itil ,. ,. .. 40 Q I I a : 5 i- 2 H. 1 Z ,5 2 E E E : - L: 21 - sg- ' - s I I V nuns , .4 M, F.. . . , , CAPTAIN BARNARD-Senior One of those fellows that plays a hard clean gameg proved to he one of the best captains to lead a Red and Black team in many a season, with his brainy headwork and tireless energy. RO B ERT ROHA-Senior Bob just got started on what would have been his best year of football when he fell heir to a broken ankle. We sure were sorry, for Bob's a. fine football player, as well as a good sport and is well liked by everyone. VVESLEY THOMPSO N--Senior YVesley fPicclesJ Thompson. Always in there lighting. That seemed to be Piccles' motto. From the innocent look on his face you'd think he was an angel, but the picture is rather misleading, however. Piccles was one of the best men on the team and was regarded around Meadville as one of the best guards in the district. ROBERT HOGAN-Junior - Hogue, although starting his High School career as a guard, was shifted to full back last year, while this year, alternating at 'both half and full, he met with instant success. Has been an all sectional man for the last two years and with another year to go,-well, he'll probably make things hot for opposing teams. WALTER BROVVN-Senior Although this was Brown's first year on the squad, he gave a favorable account of himself at end. Brown is a rather quiet fellow and not much is known about his private life. Sorry you'll not be with us next year, Brownie. JOHN SHAUB ERGER--Junior Shelly made his letter at quarter, alternating with Simpson. He is a well liked chap, and is certain to make a good showing next year. Glad to have you back, Shelly, we know you'll do your share in winning the championship next year. EUGENE KUHN-Senior Gene was one of our all sectional players, a recognition that he earned by his stellar playing throughout the season. The backfield owe much of their success to the manner in which Gene worked. Sad to say, however, this was Gene's last year on the team. This was his first year on the Red and Black team, and we regret that he is leaving us, as he was one of the best liked fellows on the teani. ' DO MINI CK LEM M E--Senior Dominick was always on his toes, and any unfortunate back that decided to go through his section of the line, chose the wrong side as he soon found out. - JOHN WILSON-Senior - John played at fullback after Hogan was shifted to half, and he certainly did make good. Rarely did he fail to make four or five yards when he was given the ball. GEORGE ROTHKOVITS-Senior George is a good natured fellow, and he sure can play football. He is one of the best men,on the team, and can he hit-ask some one that's played against him. . ass. ' i ROBERT KENT-Junior ' H L Bob had a bit of hard luck his first year on the team as a result of a broken ankle, however, he had played enough to clemonstrate his true qualities. He looks like the sure thing to us next year, and we wish him better luck. ROBERT UNGER-Senior Unger was another of the fellows who went out for the team in his senior year and made good. Bob sure was a capable player, never failing in his work at tackle.
