New Coaching Staff Leads Chiefs Meadowdale's I98l football team ended the year with a win- ning record, 6 wins and 3 losses. They started out winning their first four games. The Chiefs beat Terrace. Edmonds and Lynnwood successively to capture the Edmonds District Championship. They then went on to lose to playoff bound Everett and Snohomish. MHS got back on the winning side of things at Homecoming against Cascade. They closed the sea- K son beating Mariner and losing the final to Oak Harbor. The 6- 3 record was good enough for a 3rd place finish in WESCO. Bruce Johnson and Kyle Bride were both selected to the All- WESCO team. Bruce made All-league as a defensive end and offensive running back. Kyle was chosen All-league defensive end. The team featured six starting Juniors and they are eagerly looking forward to next season. MHS 2l Terrace 6 Three first half touchdowns by Bruce John- son, one on a pass from Mike Borders. was enough to power past the Mountlake Ter- race Halks. Glenn Landro led the defensive secondary by knocking down several Halk passes. MHS 7 Edmonds 0 A tough game was decided by a second quarter Bruce Johnson touchdown. Line backer Mark Metcalf led the defense to its first shutout of the season. MHS I4 Lynnwood 7 Bruce Johnson did it again by scoring twice from inside the five yard line. Da ve Borders received Defensive Player of the Week Award by leading the team in tackles and he also intercepted a pass. MHS I4 Marysville 0 Kyle Bride joined Bruce Johnson in the scor- ing column by catching a I 0 yard pass from Mike Borders. The entire defense did a great job and each of the I I defensive starters received a Player of the Game Award. MHS 3 Everett 5 Glen Landro provided the only points with a Held goal but it was not enough. The Sea- gulls ended the Chiefs four game winning streak with a second half touchdown pass. MHS 7 Snohomish 26 Snohomish proved why they were aff! in State by handing Meadowdale its second loss in two weeks. Bruce Johnson scored the lone touchdown. MHS 2I Cascade I4 Bill Smith and Bruce Johnson excited an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd with three Hrst half touchdowns. Cascade came back but the Chiefs defense tightened up and stopped them a touchdown short. MHS 9 Mariner 7 John Holleman sacked the Mariner quarter- back in the end zone for a 2-point safety. that proved to be the difference in the game. Bruce Johnson scored on a I5-yard counter play. MHS 7 Oak Harbor 22 Meadowdale came out strong in the first half by shutting down the Wildcat offense and a 7-point lead into the locker room. Oak Harbor came out roaring in the 2nd half and ran up 22 points to win. FOOTBALL 27
