Meadowdale's Foreign Students Club, a loosely orga- nized, easygoing and fun-loving group, entered its sec- ond year of existence in 1980-81. The club, made up of Americans as well as foreign students at MHS and other schools, meets weekly and engages in various activities such as dancing, swimming, skiing, skating, bowling and parties. Sally Beers, a founding member of the group, says, Not only do we help new and foreign exchange students get acquainted with people and help them to break in, but we American students learn about other countries, the way other people live and their cultures. The Foreign Students Club, which welcomes anyone and everyone , is led by Sally Beers, President, Merlys Lopez, Vice-President, and Valerie Obina, Secretary. Mrs. Burns is the adviser. Airheads rise Every student at MHS knows what the Opening Day Assembly means for the new sophomores, it is the mo- ment of revelation, when the all-powerful seniors bes- tow upon them a name that will follow them through their three-year career at Meadowdale. The assembly, now a much anticipated tradition, was hosted this year by seniors Dick Burton and Shelly Streick. Included were fine performance by the Impressions and the Stage Band, and skits by representatives of FHA, DECA, the junior class, and finally, the infamous seniors. The audi- ence was on the edge of their seats when finally it was declared that the class of '83 are officially, permantly, and beyond a doubt, Airheads. 1. Counselors' offices were transformed by decoration committees, and the ath letes' lockers were decorated by guardian angels. The cheerleaders' hard work contributed greatly to the school pride, class pride, and good cheer all through the week. Friday, the culmination of all the competitions involved in the week began with the assembly which featured skits by the classes, returning cheerleaders, and the spirit keg competition. Later Friday night, after the cross-country team formed an M on the field with flares before a darkened grandstand full of enthusiastic students and alumni, our Chiefs were victorious over the Lynnwood Royals in an exciting football game. The setback was a three game losing steak, but that was soon cut short with a power packed 35-6 victory against Lynnwood in the Homecoming game. Led by team captain, Dave Malnes, the team had many moments of brilliance. The special teams played an im- portant part in crucial games. Terry Heys had a seventy- seven yard kick-off return in the Homecoming game. Glenn Landro surprised many with thirty-five plus field goals. Led by elected officers and represen- tatives, of each class and for the entire student body, the group is involved in most major decisions made in the school. ASB is responsible for raising funds to support many of the extracurricular activities that are such a big part of the experience of an American high school. Chosen to lead us in 1980-1981 were President Sue Crawford, Vice-President Karla Olsen, Activities Coor- dinator Katy Huffman, Secretary Sue Nielsen and Inter- High Representative Christine Raines. These officers set for themselves the goal of unifying the classes while still preserving their class identities, thus promoting enthusiasm and spirit. 11017 .33 x, I' MSM ASB officers prove that maturity does not come with age. Young women, arranged in formal or semi-formal dress- es, took their tuxedo-clad dates to dinner before pro- ceeding to the dance. The couples arrived at the Com- mons to find themselves surrounded by clouds, rain- bows, unicorns, and winged horses as they danced to the music of laugernaut. The decorations displayed a fantasy theme and were the creations of the Tolo Decoration Committee. The committee was headed by Katy Huffman, lennifer Car- rao and Anne Topham. Profits from the sale of the 59.00 tickets went to the general ASB fund. He was the first band director at Meadowdale and has had six years previous exper- ience. The 35-member band meets daily to rehearse and learn new material. But due to the small size of the group, marching was not as frequent as in past years. The marching band did perform at all home football games, playing fight songs to further inspire the already enthusi- astic crowds. The Stage Band, which is composed of the more ad- vanced musicians in Meadowdale's music program, was led by Mr. Burton this year. The band met every morn- ing to rehearse and perfect difficult pieces of music. The 20-member band also performed at games, community gatherings and events as well as in contests with stage bands from other high schools in the area. The Boys' Track team was the top team in WESCO this year having an undefeated season. The experience of the numerous returnees, plus a strong group of Sophomores, led the team through each meet with a powerful finish. The Senior dominated team overtook many schools in- cluding Oak Harbor, and Shoreline by as much as forty points. The team has been one of the strongest Meadowdale has had in several years, according to Coach Nelson. Captain Steve Boe led the team in sprints along with hurd- lers Dave Malnes, lim Mahan, and Sophomores Terry Euling. junior Mike Holeman and Senior Lennie Usher dominated the field events. The boys' team worked well together at turnout as well as at the meets. The squad, composed mainly of juniors, was led by Cristie Albano and Linda DeBoer in field events, Gayle Bray in the high jump, and in running events Tami Musgrave, Karen Turner, and Holly Anderson. Because of the lack of depth, the team lost often in spite of achieving a high number of individual first and second place finishes. Coach lulie Rowe, called this year's girls one of the hardest working teams we've had in years. With solid care of returning Seniors anticipated for next year, the girls' track team is looking forward to another fun and successful season in 1982. ,J fr 'V Q ft,,,.,1. The day after graduation most Seniors were enjoying their first day of relaxation without the thought of an unfinished research paper or a history map that should have been done days ago. The Meadowdale baseball team was waking up early to prepare for a great event, an event that they would never forget. While others were recuperating from the all-night Senior party, the boys' baseball team was in the process of winning the State Championship in the Kingdome on june 8, 1980. The Chiefs started toward the title by capturing the District 315 crown for the third straight year. Then it was on to the WESCO title. The team has not all graduated. Seven players have re- turned this year and are continuing their winning ways. The happenings of the 1980 graduates is like a big success story. Don Long, Bart Mackie, and john Churlin all have been drafted by major league teams. The 1980 Meadowdale baseball team worked together and played together on and off the field. The results were out- standing. . ' Boys' Baseball 143 The Graduating Class of 1981 Well, here we are, at the world's door. These three years have just flown by! Seems like just yesterday when we were sweating over our new name-Goobers. Nancy Myers, our Sophomore President, helped us to pull together and get organized. That first year we sold candy canes, we were the first Sophomore class to sell t-shirts. In our junior year, aside from being plagued by all the traditional tests, we found the time and energy to sell homecoming t-shirts, but- tons, and banners for the state baseball game. fWow! What a game! We won, of course.J Sue Crawford did a good job as president, in that sometimes trying year in which we were all searching for our own identities. And now, we are T, ,,,, ,,,. M W . 19 finishing our Senior year, that time of times that will never be forgotten. lim Mahan, our Senior Class President, not only put together some original fundraisers-from flower sales to car washes to garage sales- he inspired us to keep going even when the going got rough. We're sweating again, but now it's from the apprehension of facing unknown in horizons. None of us are sure where we go from here, but we all have dreams to follow. And as we leave each other and head our separate ways, may our hearts always be one, knowing we're the best, the Class of '81 . Nourished well, our roots are strong our branches reach outward, supple and long Searching, grasping, and ever growing, with strength and life that's warm and flowing Aware of the knowledge and constantly yearning to gain the secrets that come with learning And to feel the pain and toil of striving which turns to joy upon arriving. a - ,I ,J J' I N I f V 7-v'P. -L . 1. f - - ., n f . ,f 4, V A ' , .Aff-Kfff 1 gg Z ,uf if 7? Perhaps, but Meadowdale's staff is made up of active, involved, and vital human beings. Many staff members enjoy outside activities such as fishing, camping, skiing, and travelling. Iere Cary and his family will go boating to Desolation Sound and the Canadian San luans this summer. They also will take a ferry to Skagway, Alaska and drive through the wilderness. Rod Waddell and his wife are planning a two-week trip into Canada on Honda motorcycles. Hal Youngren, Marilee Karnofski, Loa Hunter, and Shelley Rondeau played on the Edmonds District Bowling League. The Gourmet Club included many of our teachers and staff. They were Ellie Duckworth, Loa Hunter, lane Schmelzer, Marion Fyall, and Dolores Uhlman. An avid interest in biology has led Elizabeth Sears all over the world. In recent years she has travelled to Mongolia, Kenya, Tanzania, and the Calapegos Islands. The rare spiders she collected in Mongolia are now on display at the Burke Museum on the U. of W. campus. The annual Shakespearean Festival, in Ashland, Oregon, attracts Helen MacGilvra and Vicki Haynes. Mrs. Haynes was accompanied last summer by a group of interested students from her English classes. Ruth Torgeson directs a great deal of her attention and effort to an ecology group called the Main Task Force. It is involved in community efforts to protect and preserve the Lyons Creek area. Summer sailing and fishing on the waters of Puget Sound are the Mike Hilton family, the Bruce Cook family and Carole and Bill Doerschlag. Ron and Mary Bates are avid Northwest skiers when there's snow. Chuck LeWarne and his family are busy building a cabin on the ocean in southwest Washing- ton. Roberta and Bill Stady spend much of the summer at their cabin on Mason Lake. Water skiing and tennis take up many of the summer days for lack and Sue Eschrich. Nancy McCracken was paddling on the Yangtze River in China last summer. She is contemplat- ing a voyage on the Nile River in Egypt this coming summer. Meadowdale's staff is made lively and colorful by the active, fun-loving, caring people we call teachers. 168 Teachers ss Q Q f -X ' W ,,1..e.. f 1 . -Q X C pn- r S yre, . N 1. As you look back to this book in the future, may it bring back memories: the successes, the failures, the hopes, and aspirations, the dreams that will never die. A great deal of hard work went into this book, and I'd like to thank not only the Mesika Staff and the advi- sor, but also jim Palm, the Ameri- can Yearbook Company representa- tive, and Dave White from North- west Color Photography. Also a special thanks to Mr. Fraser and Mrs. Stady. And to Derek Adams, thanks for never letting anyone down. This book was created to capture but a brief moment in your lives. This chapter may be ending, but there is always a new page to turn. The past is but the beginning of a beginning, and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn.
