From the high steel beams of the sophomore hall dangled scores of nylons, and wool stockings taped to walls and windows formed the words “Sock the Tigers’. From the first tremendous moment of entering high school, the class of 1969 had pride and spirit that quickly impressed the upperclassmen and faculty. Early in the year, the sophomores created an important self-respect and determination that encouraged the entire class to reach high toward success. A class yell, the first notable achievement of the sophomore class, was enthusiastically per- formed at each pep assembly, which not only furthered class pride but also strengthened their contribution to Meadowdale. After a year of growth and adjustment, the class of ‘69 prepares to move upward toward increased spirit and responsibility in 1967-1968. The wide schedule of classes offered by Meadowdale during 1966-67 emphasized the rapid growth of experience and capabilities in both the student body and the faculty. The History department added a new one - semester class, Russian History, and also began a non-graded Contem- porary Problems course. Drama students, instructed by Mr. Crossett, created and perfected ‘‘animal personalities’, and the Meadowdale Phy- siology class, the only one offered in the district, spent long hours on frog dissections and anatomical charts. The business, language, home economics, wood shop, auto mechanics, and physical education depart- ments again presented an even finer variety of courses and electives. In both college preparatory and vocational classes, students worked with teachers to make 1966-67 not only a year of enjoyment, but a year of academic success. The annual Magazine Fund Drive, which began with the usual groans and complaints, soon snapped into an enthusiastic contest between classes and sub- scription sellers. This first united effort by Meadowdale’s Student Body set the pace for the following school activities and community benefits. Throughout each event, both the record profit and the high spirit achieved by the students and the hard working ASB officers and council climaxed and highlighted the effort. Girls’ Club week cap- tured the interest of many girls. The week included a kick-off assembly, committee sign-ups, a pepsi party and a tea for teachers and students new to Meadowdale and the district. Many money-raising activities supplied the funds used to finance the Tolo held in February. Mem- bers of Girls’ Club worked in the concession stands dur- ing home games. The club also sponsored a movie and a dance. The Girls’ Club has worked for and with the girls of Meadowdale to make this year of 1966-67 a successful and active one. During the football and basketball season, Boys Club, alternating with Girls Club, worked in the concession stands to raise funds. Usually these hardworking members came from the Active Boys Club, a group of about fifty, who were especially inter- ested in the activities and purposes of the club. Along with the advisors, Mr. Lee and Mr. Weaver, the officers, Lanny Hansen, Dan Brecht, Mark Steinberger, and Randy Mickels, supervised the growing collec- tion of money intended for a new trophy case for Meadowdale. The reader board, last year’s Boys Club project, was kept constantly up-to-date with lively remind- ers of school events. Because of their vig- or and acceptance of responsibility, Boys Club overcame difficulties and made 1966-67 a year of growing achievement. This successful dance was the result of weeks of organization, | but this alone was not the reason for the atmosphere of triumph. The Junior Class set a precedent and created a tra- dition at Meadowdale. Despite dissent and controversy, the Junior Class successfully presented its case for a prom. With unlimited cooperation from their advisors, the Juniors showed Meadowdale that they could function effectively as a class. The Junior Prom was more than a dance; it was set by the Junior Class as a goal and it was one they had the courage to reach for. — Minin PLL PIE, Covered with red paper hearts, the sweet- heart tree stood in the center of a small pink forest. From the transformed stage, couples seated at tables looked down on the crowd- ed dance floor as they enjoyed their refresh- ments. In a small clearing of pink trees on a circular bandstand, the Ken Cloud Orchestra played familiar old dance tunes. Couples walked over a small, white bridge as they entered. Others talked quietly in the shadow of the sweetheart tree. This memorable evening was conceived and produced by Girls’ Club. The Tolo has been and always will be an effort on the part of the Meadow- dale Girls’ Club to provide Meadowdale with a tradition of excellence. The dedicated few who so often held sticky-wet paint brushes in hand were the twelve who also stood faithfully before fans at o every Meadowdale pep assembly, football game, A and basketball game. RAISES SPIRIT The Meadowdale cheerleading staff, led by Cheer Queen Marcia Harrell and Song Queen Kim Bingham, coaxed tre- mendous spirit and enthusiasm out of an often lukewarm student body. The spirit stick, which initiated exciting class competition during each pep assembly during the year, was won by Meadowdale’s cheer squad at the 1966 summer cheerleader conference. Besides the difficult routines perfect- ed and presented by the cheerleaders and songleaders, the school mascots Robin Klein and Mary Leahy, and yell leaders, Doug Pittis and Doug Aukland, added humor and distinction to Meadowdale’s rooting section. Without the hard work and lively enthusiasm of the cheer squad, Meadowdale’s spirit and loyalty to both the teams and school could not have climbed so high. Working stead- ily for over a month preparing for the dance, the girls efforts produced a successful and memorable homecoming. MARLENE MAXWELL MISS WEEKS MRS. WALLS For another year the screams of enthusiastic girls have echoed through the gym. These girls who turned out for G.A.A. strove not only for enjoyment but for the development of skills as well. During the various sports-days and playdays held with other schools, the girls had an opportunity to exercise these skills in competit ion. GILSON ADVISOR Under the harsh glare of stadium and gym lights, navy blue outfits and emblems stepped quickly into precise columns and difficult rou- tines. Each drill had taken hours of rigid practice and discipline; often the twenty-one girl team worked after school or in the evenings to im- prove and perfect their performance. Captain Patti Burke and co-captain Margo Joramo helped to create the many intricate routines and movements and to encourage the spirited style exhibited before pleased football and basketball crowds. At each assembly and pep rally, team members presented the flag and often sold pro- grams at the games. Respect and admiration from the student body increased as Drill Team, through hard work and dedication, became an important part of Meadowdale’s 1966-67 spirit and achievement. The boys played hard and worked well to- gether as a team. Winning an exciting game in which fine defensive play stopped the Terrace Hawks from scoring the winning touchdown, the Chiefs gathered momentum. They went on to win the Homecoming game with the Cascade Bruins. Bruce, Farley completed a pass to Greg Anabel for a Chief touchdown early in the game.
