— Fine Arts Behind closed curtains As the curtain went down no one attending the play “King Arthur’s Sword” really knew what happened be- hind the scenes. Up front the play was about a contest between eli- gible knights, the saintly Ar- thur and the evil Pellinore who is trying to pull a sword from a magic anvil, thus proving who is the rightful heir to the throne. Merlin, the wizzard, who set the sword in the anvil, proclaims that Arthur is the true son of the late King Uther of Eng- land and persuades Arthur to try and pull the sword from the anvil, which he does. Ar- thur is proclaimed the new King of England. Behind the scenes dressing | Please come out Arthur, played by junior Johnny West, shows that he is the only one who pocesses the pow- er to pull the sword out of the anvil. 16 Fine Arts all of the characters in me- deival costumes was no small task especially when it comes to persuading high school boys to wear revealing leo- tards on stage. The rock upon which the anvil rested collapsed several times before it was finally made sturdy enough to hold the sword pullings, Merlin, Bryan Tunnell, developed an allergy to the glue required to hold his beard and often went beardless. A scroll which had to be unrolled during a scene, which hap- pened to be a very serious scene, always turned up something of a rather shock- ing nature to the unroller, Jon Stonestreet. Bryan Tunnell was not happy at the prospect of be- ing painted green for his frog scene but a green leotard, frog head and mother-made flippers save the day. The set and props themselves took a tremendous amount of work which did not cease until late the evening before the play opening. There were the trees to make, a large back drop re- quired the use of the largest ladder the school owned and a huge cathedral window was required in the final scene. The play closed with a great deal of laughter as Ar- thur knocked Pellinore’s sword off stage and a little boy in the front row politely threw it back at a nonplussed Pellinore who bowed his thanks. Extra, Extra Jon Stonestreet reads some on coming news. What? Me? “Pull a sword out of a rock?” replies freshman Barry Cook. Tech. Crew First Row: Margaret Watson, Jenny Blaine, Pam Laslie, Carol Kiger, Spencer Cook, Steve Combs, Kenneth Williams, Jimmy Casteel Back Row: Paul Haynes, Dane Bragg, Shawn Stockwell

==tine Arts Soothing the savage beast The familiar saying about the soothing effect of music generally proves true when one is referring to the music programs here at school. Where-as the rock concerts that students were used to attending definitely didn’t serve that purpose, the mu- sic presented by the bands and choirs here at school did seem to have a settling effect on audiences. Generally very mellow, traditional music was chosen because it must be kept in mind that our choirs, orches- tra and bands were involved in the learning process. Lessons well learned were evident when one saw and heard the marching band at fall football games and again when the seasons was over 18 Fine Arts and they performed at Christmas and in the spring as the concert band. The Jazz band, once again unique in the county, per- formed to a slightly faster tempo then did the other groups. The choirs, dressed to the teeth, performed under the direction of a student teach- er in the Spring concert. The grand finale of the musical groups was, as al- ways, graduation, where they managed to bring tears to the eyes of many of the Gradu- ates with their selection All That I Can Be. More pep please John Stimis and Chris Hudson don’t seem to display too much pep. They’re concentrat- ing on the next drum entrance. Sing sweetly Mr. Earl Binns conducts the Girl’s Ensemble in a number at The Spring Concert.
