Speakers imported, students exported Sometimes during the school year students walked into a classroom to find that there was a guest speaker that day. Speakers coming from outside could generally cover information from first hand experience that a teacher might not have been familiar with. A speaker from Dirt Shirt came to talk to the DE classes. Max from XL 102 also visited Mrs. Susan Hudson’s classes. In photography, George Nann, head of the photogra- phy classes at VCU came to speak and in Drama a mime artist came to share her knowledge with Miss Priscilla Barth’s classes. There were speakers for the political candidates early in the year, speakers in lan- guage classes and the entire school attended an assembly at which the speaker was a man who had finished the Richmond Marathon in a wheelchair. Some students had the ad- vantage of gleaning knowl- edge from guest speakers and then heading out for some very special travel that helped them gain some knowledge first-hand. In the winter Roxanne Combs and Greg Mum- power were part of a Friend- ship Force trip to Central America. When looking through a scrapbook of photos that Roxanne had painstakingly organized to record her trip, it became evident that she had made many friends dur- ing the trip. During spring break, Mrs. Linda Davidson and her hus- band chaperoned a group of students on a week long trip to France. The students did not have to be taking French but the approximately twen- ty students who went from Meadowbrook were all French students. The trip was filled with hu- morous contact with the na- tives, seasickness crossing the English Channel and qui- et country picnics. When students returned to school from these trips they became asort of built-in guest speaker for their class- mates. ZZZ Continent hopping hits Mrs. Linda Davidson with jet lag. Celebrity time A lively conversation seems to be in progress between Mrs. Susan Hudson and Max of XL 102 during his visit to Meadow- brook. Uck! Students ‘show their stuff” while picnicing in the French countryside. Speakers Field 13
