981 — The year it showed Formal, yet not so formal Academics adj. 5 Based on formal edu- cation. Classes, commonly referred to as academics may have been based on formal education but there was nothing formal about much that went on. There always had to bea certain amount of formal classroom instruction just to dis- tribute necessary information. Some of the things teachers chose to do to rein- force that information is what the follow- ing section is all about. the drama classes culminated in the production of “King Arthur’s Sword”. All the work that went into the music classes became obvious at the Christmas and Spring concerts, the pa- rades the band participat- ed in around the state, and various programs present- ed to the student body during assemblies. Students in the visual arts didn’t confine them- selves to their own work. They decorated the walls in the gym, made banners for the auditorium, and even had a day of kite flying to try out kites they Study? The Times Dispatch did a very thorough story on the canoe trip to the Mattaponi River. Students in the work and Business Pro- grams went out for half a day to put their “morning-learned” knowledge to work. Meanwhile the students at the Technical Center, for half a day, were learning the practical skills they would need for planned careers. Putting together a Fashion Show proved to be quite a learning experience for both Mrs. Winston and her twenty models. Money raised from this fashion show helped, in part, with money from the Mini-Olympics and other sources to give the faculty scholarship to Dang Hoang. Book Knowledge is an aspect of learning that really accomplishes noth- ing unless that knowledge can be taken and used in some way. The flurry of academically related ac- tivities proved that our students were doing just that.

They treat us like adults. In a poll taken among 50 Chesterfield Tech students, what seemed most favorably about tech? They liked the fact that they were treated like adults at tech. One thing that bothered the largest number of students was the crowded condition of the tech bus, followed closely by missing out on the activities in mid-day here at school. About one half of the stu- dents polled wished that they could spend more time at tech since the classes they were taking were preparing them for a career. Mixing with students from other schools gave our stu- dents the opportunity to compare their abilities and attitudes with those of other schools’ students. Meadowbrook had the largest number of students in the photography program and they seemed to be bene- Snip! Snip! Cut! Cut! In April the students in- volved in courses from auto repair to horticulture got to display their skills to those in- terested in an open house. One could purchase plants, eat food prepared in food services, see slide presenta- tions in photography or watch a brick wall being laid. Tech once again filled a need for those students who have a definite idea of what they wish to do with their fu- ture and don’t plan to go on to college. It gave them a head start over the students who will need to complete two to four or more years of higher education for planned careers. What’s this? Ray Brooks and Carla Pritchard show Vicki Tuck how to operate a large format camera. Maybe some paint boys, Ricky Chamberlain, Thomas Mollory and Greg White show what they can do with a beat up car.
