Of course there is the class clown. Shorty Welsh. Puddenhead Pye, the football hero, who has a lot of trouble with English. He is prodded on by his football coach Mike Lang. Jeff Sanders and Kewpie Russell, two seniors, who are in Miss Meadows play. A friend of all is Betty Gregg, secretary of the Principal. Fowler is the young and brand new principal at Central High. Arbutis Meadows is the younger and equally new attraction. The complications begin when Arbutis selects the Senior Play. A poetic tradegy written by Hortense Anderson in free verse. The verse is so free, in fact, it defies anyone to capture and get a little meaning out of it. When this play goes into rehearsal, the result is pure comedy. Further complications arise from the triangle-like situation among Fowler, Arbutis and Dolores Stone, daughter of Solomon Stone, tyrannical head of the local school board. Also competing for Arbutis's attention is the high-powered football coach, who goes to great lengths to keep Puddenhead Pye eligible for the team. 34 this pace co—sponsored by BATTLE CREEK GRAIN CO. and OSBORN TRANSFER, both of battle CREEK, NEBRASKA SENIOR CLASS PLAY , - HOME SWEET HOMICIDE Marian Carstairs..........Rosemary Novotny Archie ........................ Though the Meadow Grove football team had a disappointing 3-6 season, they have shown an improvement over the past few years. A new coaching staff and injury to key players early in the season were major factors in the Trojans' unsuccessful endeavor. The Bartlett game proved fatal and probably changed the course of the season as four seniors Terry Beed, Larry Tegeler, Steve Sparr, and Royce Lyall were all injured. The future of the team looks very promising as most of the team will be together in the newly merged Elkorn Valley High School. To make matters worse, the coaching staff changed hands just preceding the fourth game. But under the circumstances, Mr. Steiner and Coach Rohlfsen did a superb job. Lack of height and experience proved the downfall of the team, as we had only one man over six feet and only three upper classmen on the squad. The future of the team looks excellent, with the added growth and another year under their belts the new school should see a much improved team. this page is co—sponsored bv MODE O'DAV, GEHRKE'S T.V., HECKMAN, and GARY'S BOOKS OFFICE SUPPLY, all of NORFOLK, Nebraska Coach Steiner, Darrel, Coach Rohlfsen Darrel Schmidt Senior 93 Points THIS PAGE IS CO-SPONSORED BV THE FAIR STORE, SILLIK'S, NORFOLK OFFICE EQUIPMENT and SHEPPARD'S HOME BAKERY, all of Norfolk, Nebraska 43 TRACK Those boys participating were: Larry Tegeler Darrel Schmidt Ben Wyatt Bob Sparr Greg Schwartz John Humphrey Jim Verplank Jerry Smith Rick Daniel Larry Werner Jack Smith Bob Berry Don Sparr Track coaches Mr. Steiner and Mr. Rohlfsen didn't expect miracles from their young track squad but weren't too disappointed with the results. Though there were no state qualifiers the team showed excellent future material. It was the best showing of a Meadow Grove track team for quite a number of years. 44 P VOLLEYBALL Back Row: Mr. Graham, Diane Warnke, Bonnie Braun, Janice Kinkle, Elaine Murray, Jane Teleger, JaNelle Horrocks. The Trojanettes started out the season out with a first place trophy'won at the Orchard Invitational Volleyball Tournament by defeating Chambers. They also received third place trophy in the Sandhills Gateway Conference Tournament at Clearwater, beaten only by Orchard. This was a very successful year for the Meadow Grove Trojanettes who put a lot of effort through. The Meadow Grove Trojanettes were one of eight teams which participated in the Laurel Tournament. To participate in this tournament your seasons records had to be 75% or better in number of wins. Even though the Trojanettes got fourth place, they put forth a lot of effort. Their record was a 15-5, win-loss for their entire season. Mr. Graham coached the Trojanettes for this 66-67 year and did a remarkable job. The new brick building was erected in the year of 1911. It was not completed in time for use that fall, so school opened in the old frame building which had been moved down to its present location. Not having sufficient space for all pupils, the primary, first and second grades were placed in the old building on the north side of West Main Street, which is used by the Farmer Union for storage. Miss Amber Adams, now Mrs. Allie Horrocks, was teacher of that group. Miss Hennie Dales of Tilden taught third and fourth grades and Miss Nellie Mills who lived with her parents here in town, taught fifth and sixth grades. A large group of seventh and eighth graders were taught by Miss Donahue from Pennsylvania. The High School consisted of 20 pupils with two instructors, and had ninth, tenth and eleventh grades at that time. Mr. C. C. Otradovec, with Miss Leak Hurd, from the state of Maine, were in charge of the high school classes. Mr. Otradovec was supervisor of the entire school, a position which he held for many years. Some subjects taught in high school were: Latin for three years; English in all grades; two years of Algebra and Geometry; Botany and Physics each one year; Ancient History and Medieval History. Early in the year of 1912 all grades moved into the new school-house. This was the beginning of a great advancement. High School graduates were very few at that time and in the spring of 1911, only one pupil graduated from our eleven-grade high school. In the spring of 1912 there were four graduates. At the beginning of the term in 1912, the 12th grade was added, also a few new courses of study, including a Normal Training Course. This they could take if they could successfully pass the state required examinations which qualified them for that profession. Many schools were provided teachers from Meadow Grove High through this avenue. Another course added was shop, which both boys and girls could participate. A gymnasium had been provided in the basement where many exciting games of basketball took place that year. Some years later, the new gymnasium was built and the old gym was remodeled and used as a Home Economics room when that course was added to the curriculum. Also another subject was added, that being the study of the German language. A few years later students were given the opportunity to study French, and a little later, the Spanish language. The first class to graduate from the twelfth grade was in the spring of 1913. During these fifty-four years, many hundreds have graduated from Meadow Grove High School, but according to present trends, it seems inevitable that our present class of 1967 will have the distinction of being the last class to ever receive a diploma from Meadow Grove High School. 48 THE TOWN Meadow Grove was plated in 1886 on a quarter which was owned by P. V. Lewis. F. J. Hale built the first business house and David Ames the first dwelling. In the year of 1908 the town of Meadow Grove had four general stores where one could purchase shoes, over shoes, dry goods, of most any kind as well as groceries. One of them being located where the memorial park is now, was operated by L. R. Pritchard Son, one by James L. Dunn in the building where Giehler's Market is now, another was located at the site where Warrick's Lumber Yard and was known as Perkins Store. The other was operated by the Steelak's and was the building where Lewis Store is now. At this time there were two banks, The Security Bank, and the other, The State Bank, it being in the building where the Meadow Grove News is now. The Post Office was in the building which used to be known as Al's Cafe. The Post Master was a Mr. Robert Rouse and his son, George C. Rouse, had a small grocery business in the same building. Dr. W. L. Kindred had an office which is now our town library. There were two hardware stores, J. I. Beech, which is still located on the corner and Brewer Brown, which is now the tavern. There was a meat market where one could buy fresh meats. Two Black Smith Shops, one about where the new telephone building now stands, operated by Mr. Charles Carr and the other by Mr. John Schinck, it being where Darrel Carstens shop is now located. There were two barber shops and a confectionery store, with an assortment of things. Where the Post Office is now located was a livery stable. There was also a mill, it being located south of where the jail now stands. An Opera House was south of Lewis's and all kinds of entertainment was brought here. These are only a few things about the early history of our school and town. We would like to thank those who had any part in giving us any kind of information. It is hard to imagine that things were like this years ago. We hope you have enjoyed looking back . 49 51 m rout im w New addition Hickory Dicory Dock Touche!
