It is our hope that its pages will renew fond memories and remind you of pleasant years at M.G.H.S. To you, Mr. Hummer, with deep appreciation for the guidance and understanding you have shown us, we Seniors dedicate the 1963 TROJAN. Since your initiation with us in the fall of 1959, you have attempted to establish in us a more complete knowledge of the world in which we live—through Science, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. For all of these we are truly grateful. R MR. CHARLES HUMMER GEORGE STOUT, President DON WARNKE, Treasurer JOE SULLIVAN, Secretary BURT BERG ALVIN MEYER GORDON McINTOSH Superin t en dent’s W i eSSciae It seems rather sad, at first, to be reminded that in another year you will be separated. Perhaps some of you will be in the East, while others will be in the West. Maybe you will never be together again. It's true there will be reunions. In five years all of you will live away from Meadow Grove. How will this community justify the cost of your education? Their only remuneration will be when they read with pride in the Meadow Grove News that one of you has had a part in a Missile Program or may have become a lawyer, a teacher, a doctor or maybe a mother. With this thought in mind, set a course that will lead you to a pinnacle of success that will surprise the home-folks and at the same time reward you with a lifetime of happiness. 6 WM. E. WINTERS Norfolk, Nebraska C ustodi art 8 MARY SULLIVAN RALPH SWITZER GRADS a ass In the fall of 1959, twenty-one freshmen entered the halls of Meadow Grove High School, Mr. Ralph Merklinger was superintendent. His co-workers were Mrs. Marge Ankeny, English; Mr. Charles Hummer, Science; Miss Mildred McNamee, Home Ec. and History; Mr. Spear, Math and Sports; and Mr. Leonard Sawyer, the Band instructor. Our class sponsor was Mr. Hummer and we were led by Duane Suckstorf as President, his helpers were Jane Horrocks, Jeannie Hamely, and Kay Ziehmer. Carol Granger left at the end of the first semester. As we came back to our second year of high school we knew the ropes of high school just a little bit better. We started the year off right with 2 0 of the class returning. Mr. Blade was superintendent, and his helpers were Mr. Charles Hummer, Miss McNamee, Mrs. Carol Henry, Music and English; and Mr. Robert Perry, the new coach. Mr. Sawyer was again here to help us with Band. At the end of the first semester Mr. Blade left and was replaced by Mr. Hiltner, who taught Mathematics. During the second semester we lost Kenneth Carr and were very glad to have Marla Creager join us. The class was led by Mick Anson, President; with Walter Humphrey, Mike Sullivan, and Rodger Nelson. Our sponsor was Coach Perry. In the spring we selected our class rings. As we again returned to our next year, we gave the Seniors a delightful Banquet with the theme The Twist. We also put on the productions of How to Capture and Keep a Husband, The Great Western Melodrama, and Beware of Termites. We did this with the help of our sponsor, Mrs. Carol Henry. The teaching staff was the same except for a new Superintendent, Mr. William Conry, and Mr. Young, the new Band Instructor. The class was led by Thyra Lulow with Jane Horrocks, Kathi Daniel, Gail Grant, and Tonda Brosh as her Helpers. At the beginning of the second semester we gained Ronnie Zierke, an addition which brought our enrollment to eighteen. Tim Reikofski did not return. At the beginning of our last Plunge, we put on the swingin' Hillbilly Weddin with the help of our sponsor, Mrs. Anderson. We all worked very hard this year as it was our last and we wanted to put out the best yearbook ever. All the teachers returned except Miss McNamee, who retired to take a world cruise and Mrs. Henry, who wished to quit teaching for a while. Mr. Young took over vocal music and Mr. Steinner taught History. Mrs. Anderson took on the task of Home Economics and English. One night in May we all donned blue caps and gowns and marched up the aisle to our final goal of high school graduation. It was so very pretty, but just a little sad as another session of MGHS history went by. About this time Roland Maxwell and his aunt are forced to stay over night.so Paw decides to start a feud and wing the stranger in the excitement. From then on things become more complicated by the minute as a fake feud rages and finally plans are made for a big wedding. Paw forces Roland to the altar but just in the nick of time he is rescued. Many awards were bestowed upon the team and individual members of it, including the Sandhills-Gate-way Championship. The Trojans compiled a 9 victory and no loss record and were rated number one in eight-man football by the NORFOLK DAILY NEWS and number nine in the state by the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD. M. G. was one of eleven eight-man undefeated football teams in Nebraska where 190 schools play the game. Duane Suckstorf and Ron Zierke were chosen all-conference and Mick Anson, Jack Scott, and Walter Humphrey all received honorable mention. Duane Suckstorf was also chosen one of the top twenty players in NE Nebraska by the NORFOLK DAILY NEWS. Mick Anson, Jack Scott, and Duane Suckstorf were all nominated as all-state and at various times through-out the season were Stars of theWeek in the state's prominent newspapers. 40 VnJ.f.at.J Sa.JML.Qa lewa tf a ampioni MEADOW GROVE 30 CLEARWATER 0 The sun shown graciously on M.G.H. S. as they roared to a 30 to 0 victory over the helpless Clearwater Cardinals in the only afternoon game of the year. MEADOW GROVE 39 MONROE 7 Due to light failure in the 3rd quarter of the M. G. Monroe contest, it was the longest game of the year, but it wasn't long enough for the Mustangs as they lost 39 to 7. MEADOW GROVE 33 SNYDER 0 The Snyder Warriors met the M .G. Trojans for the first time in M.G.'s history and went home on the short end of a 33 to 0 score . MEADOW GROVE 21 CLEARWATER 7 The Clearwater Cardinals returned to Meadow Grove only to be defeated again in a much closer contest. It was during this game that the Trojans lost their first team guard, Rodger Nelson. He was sidelined for the rest of the season with a broken leg. MEADOW GROVE 47 OSMOND 6 The revenge-seeking Trojans traveled to Osmond with blood in their eyes. The Tigers had defeated the M.G. squad last year by 14 to 0. But, the tale was different this year as the Trojans smothered the Tigers 47 to 6. MEADOW GROVE 34 CHAMBERS 7 The Chambers Coyotes never knew what hit them as Meadow Grove rolled to their 6th consecutive win by a 34 to 7 margin. MEADOW GROVE 27 ELGIN 6 The following week the Trojans traveled to Elgin and let the wind out of the Eagles sail to the tune of 27 to 6. Elgin was never a threat as the Trojans rolled to a 14 to 0 half time lead. MEADOW GROVE 41 OAKDALE 13 Seeking revenge from last years trimming at Oakdale, the Trojans found the Antelopes easy to defeat. They did just that by pouring it on. The score at half was 21 to 0 and the M.G. Trojans went on to win their 8th consecutive game 41 to 13. MEADOW GROVE 34 ORCHARD 32 For their last game the Trojans traveled to Orchard. This was the championship game; and if we won, it meant also a trophy. The Trojans found it rough going as they trailed 18 to 0 at the half and 26 to 6 at the end of the 3rd quarter. But, being full of spirit and fight they scored a red-hot-28-point 4th quarter to win 34 to 32. This was the wildest game of the season. M.G. was almost as stunned as the crowd when they blocked an Orchard punt and made the winning T.D. This game will long be remembered by the students and the fans as the most thrilling of all. 4 1 BACK ROW: Thyra Lulow, Judy Sparr, Katrina Murray, Betty Mather, Janelle Meyer, Gayl Larson, Carol Suckstorf, Nancy Larson, Carolyn Berg, Carol Kuchar, Kay Ziehmer. Meadow Grove finished in second place in the Sandhills Gateway Conference. The Trojans won many thrilling games and some very high scoring was seen. The 10 and 8 record was the best Meadow Grove High had produced in 7 long and lean years. The season ended when Meadow Grove was tripped by St. Ludgers in the semifinals of the District tourney. In the first round Meadow Grove defeated Clearwater 55 to 53 in a real thriller. The score was tied many times but the Cardinals never had the lead after the first minute. Congratulations to Coach Perry and his 1962-63 basketball squad. They represented M.G.H.S. well. 44 ADVERTISERS COMPLIMENTS OF The Delay National Bank NORFOLK'S HOME OWNED BANK SERVING NORTHEAST NEBRASKA FOR THIRTY YEARS MEMBER OF THE FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION NORFOLK NEBRASKA Gasoline Kerosene Distilatte Diesel ESMHEujOI Products Fertilizer Batteries Tires Auto Ass'n Statex ANHYDROUS You Own It!
