3ke trojan Published by :lT[eaclow Of rove V4.igk School Meadow Grove, Nebraska It has been our most sincere purpose to compile and publish this 1959—60 edition of the TROJAN to the best of our ability. Our endeavor is to revive pleasant memories and enable each student to recapture and relive his adventures in high school. We, the seniors of 1960 wish to dedicate this annual to our parents. It is our most sincere desire to express to them our deepest gratitude for their patience and understanding during our school days. We would like to say thanks” for their guidance during our troubles and also for rejoicing during our times of triumph. We hope that when we become parents we can give our children as much love, patience, and understanding as our parents have given us. May God bless them. —2— “Soaod Education Back Row: H. T. Sufren,i ttevule it d Tfteddaye This 1960 Trojan, like those of previous years, represents considerable creative and original effort on the part of the staff. It has been their aim to provide you with an interesting record by presenting the cast of students as they appeared on the stage of the Meadow Grove Public School. I feel that the staff made a wise choice in the dedication of this book. Parents through their interest and constructive criticism have made this school what it is today. By your graduation, Class of 60, you are nearer the time when you will be asked to accept the responsibility of taking an active part in providing education. It is essential that you now realize the important function schools play in the development of society and that you do all in your power to see that insignificant notions, activities, and prejudices do not stand in the way. cJ}nnual iStafy JVe ent the 1960 ZJrojan Co-Editors.............................................................Bonnie Cleveland, Georgia Grant Business Manager..........................................................................Carolyn DeCamp Athletics..................................... General Ralph Merklinger ruled us the first year, with Colonel Sandra Hamley at the head of the ranks. The Colonel was helped by Majors Black, Grant, and Meyer. Our regiment marched on to our second year with General Merklinger leading us again. James Duchow and Dennis Lewis did not rejoin our ranks. Colonel Lynda Black lead us this year. She was assisted by Majors Suckstorf, Hamley, Horrocks, and Meyer. Privates Jack Lawless and Donald Bradley joined our ranks for a few months, but were soon discharged. Later that year. Merle Rienke was also discharged. We entered our third year again led by General Merklinger. Jeanette Urban joined our ranks. Colonel Arlyn Suckstorf led us this year. He was assisted by Majors Wynn, DeCamp, and Meyer. Entertainment was given to the other regiments when we presented the play “A Dance With Our Miss Brooks.” We gave our superiors a lovely banquet with the theme A Song in My Heart.” We are now on the last lap of our journey. General Merklinger again is “showing us the way.” Colonel Georgia Grant, assisted by Majors Meyer, DeCamp and Wauer, was at the head of the ranks. We were happy to have private Theron Jensen join our ranks, but sorry to lose privatt 1st class Jeanette Urban. Our subordinates gave us a beautiful banquet South of I he Border , and we presented the play “Maid to Order” for the other platoons. Privates 1st class Lynda Black and David DeCamp were crowned Queen and King in our final lap. We all agree that “We have crossed the bay and the ocean lies ahead. —11— Hi yo s.lvev- Jo VcsVw tooK 1 (Vo Ha vAs Su eay to teU k tV e iv'u.tK I a7 A VNotV Y but t e voCbV 44 7VM We the Seniors of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty of Meadow Grove High School being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. In Witness Whereof, the parties have hereunto affixed their hands and seals on this last will and testament of the Class of ’60. a t rV —13— 0P%afiAeccf I am Father Time. The year is 2000 A.D. The city is Meadow Grove. The purpose of my making this report is to tell you how the class of 1960 is progressing. 1 made my first stop at the new state hospital. There I met the head nurse, LYNDA BLACK, who has been confined there the last ten years. Apparently she couldn't get along with the opposite sex. I next visited Dahl's Dentist Office. BONNIE CLEVELAND, his assistant, was having an argument with Miss McNamee, a patient, who thought she was having too many teeth extracted. Due to all the confusion, I left. As I hurried down the street, I met BILLY GREEN. He told me he was manager of “Billy's Beauty Bar , and that he taught a class of charm to all girls interested. Because my curiosity got the best of me, I stopped in to visit his shop. There working busily was CAROLYN DE CAMP. She was a hair stylist, and she was giving Mr. Hummer a mowhawk haircut. As I proceeded on my way, I noticed on a bill board that MAX DE CAMP had the lead role in the current broadway play ‘‘Kathy My Love . Having reached 11th and Main, I saw a huge manufacturing company. I went in and met the President, DENIS DUSEL. His company manufactured Betsy Wetsy Dolls. He decided if you can't lick'em; join'em. As I continued on my way, I met a middle-aged lady, JANET HORROCKS, who was pitifully crying because she had lost her job of chairman of the HDS (Homeless Dogs Society). My next stop was the Bus Depot. There I met JILL MATHER and EVELYN HUMPHREY, who were partners in a bus line between Meadow Grove and Norfolk. They were having an argument because each wanted to take the night shift. Evelyn gave me the directions to Jensens Body Shop (car repair). I found that THERON JENSEN was married and was the father of five little Jensens. He was fine, but his son, Sammy, just had fallen into a pail of grease. I next visited CAROLYN LARSON at her law office. She is a very successful private detective. Her specialty is locating lost articles. My feet seemed rather tired, so I went into the lobby of a dance studio to rest. There I saw the dance instructor, KAYLEEN LARSON, who was teaching a class of young men. It seemed she was paying more attention to her partner than to her business. As I continued my walk, 1 heard music coming from the Starlight Club. I entered, and there I saw GLORIA LARSON rehearsing the current pop tune, ‘‘Gramps’ B.V.D.'S . She was accompanied by Frenchy's Frantic Five. Due to some hunger pains, I stopped in at the ‘‘Duke and Duchess Piazza Palace . There I met the Duchess, MARILYN MOZER, who was the head cook. I had been told that HARLAN WEINGART was the new announcer at Radio Station K E Z, As I entered, I heard him announce about the special meeting being held at the city hall. Due to my curiosity, I attended the meeting. There I met ARLYN SUCKSTORF, a minister of one of the prominent churches in town. He was giving an impressive talk on the evils of intoxicating drinks. I couldn't leave town without visiting the High School. I was surprised to find that CLAUDIA WAUER was the superintendent, as Mr. Merklinger had retired to janitor. He decided it was an easier way to make a living. Upon smelling an offensive odor coming from the science room, I investigated and found IMOGENE SCOTT, the science teacher, working on a formula which she hoped, if properly used, would increase her height. Nearing the outskirts of town, I noticed a lot of confusion at the corner of 10th and Vine. It seemed that JACK WYNN, the policeman, had been involved in another accident. Coming to the end of my journey, I visited at the home of Darrell Wyatt. His wife, the former GEORGIA GRANT, was trying to quiet their twelve children. They had decided it was ‘‘Cheaper by the Dozen . While talking to Georgia, SANDRA HAMLEY, now Mrs. John Denny, stopped in for coffee. She was caring for her tomcat Elmer , who was recovering from the croup. Because of theicommotion they were causing, I slipped out the back door. Noticing that it was getting near sundown, and time for me to catch my plane, I started for the airport. As I trudged along, I heard a loud roar. I turned and saw ELAINE HOWARD, now Mrs. Merle Strom, coming to a stop beside me in her produce truck. She graciously gave me a ride to the airport and told me she was still trying to teach Merle how to milk cows. I thanked her for the lift and hurried to meet my plane. The pilot, MARJORIE MEYER, informed me that she had broken the speed record for Around the World jet flights. As I sat in the plane and thought over the day's happenings, I realized that the class of 1960 had accomplished very successfully many of their school-day dreams. —14— In the fall of 1959, three juniors again enrolled in the Meadow Grove High School for another step toward graduation. During the football and basketball season the Pep Club sold candy, gum, pop, popcorn and coffee to the Meadow Grove Fans. To raise money for the Athletic Banquet the Pep Club sold Trojan pennants and white sweatshirts with a red Trojan on the front of them. MEADOW GROVE CO-OP ASS'N. -27- SHORT Y S TAVERN Athletic Sanquet On March 17, the annual Trojan Athletic Banquet was held in the High School Gymnasium. The gym was decorated in the school colors, red and white. The throne was on the north side of the room. The west wall was decorated with profiles of the lettermen on a back ground of black paper. An eight foot Trojan decorated the east wall. The main part of the evening was the crowning of the Queen and King. The Queen was Lynda Black and the King was David DeCamp. The Queen and King were attended by three attendants each. First attendants were Sandra Hamley and Arlyn Suckstorf. Second Attendants were Georgia Grant and Harlan Weingart. Third attendants were Marjorie Meyer and Billy Green. Coach Spear presented football and basketball letters to Mickey Anson, David DeCamp, Douglas Ellis, Billy Green, Rodger Nelson, Larry Sparr, Duane Suckstorf, Mike Sullivan, Harlan Weingart, Jerry Wyatt, and Ronnie Zierke. Student Manager was Theron Jensen. Theron Jensen was the toastmaster. Donna Rae played the processional and recessional for the coronation. Entertainment was furnished by the Senior trio, and Mrs. Ankeny. We also enjoyed a movie of the Nebraska and Oklahoma football game. Mr. Merklinger spoke in recognition of the girl’s volleyball team. We closed the evening by singing “Cheer Cheer” accompanied by Mr. Sawyer on his cornet. Mothers of the pep club members prepared a very good meal. Seventh and eighth grade girls served the meal. The Pep Club Banquet was sponsored by Miss McNamee. fiuKL i SeMi i cutquet The Junior class gave us Seniors of ’60 a beautiful banquet on May 12, 1960 in the school auditorium. The theme was “South of the Border.” The welcome was given by Jerry Wyatt. Georgia Grant gave the response for the Seniors. Mrs. Ankeny sang, “South of the Border” and “Mexican Hat Dance”. Theron Jensen and Mike Sullivan also entertained us by singing several popular songs. Mr. Merklinger gave a short and interesting talk. The guests entered the auditorium through a path decorated with baskets of flowers. The entrance to the dining area was decorated with two donkeys. The west wall was decorated with two Mexican dancers. The east wall was decorated with a Mexican taking a siesta. South American music served as a background to our banquet. Joyce Lyall gave the farewell. The Junior and Senior mothers prepared the meal. The following Sophomores served the dinner; Beth Ann McIntosh, Marcella Sparr, Sandra James, Sandra Howard, Douglas Ellis, Ronnie Zierke, and Mike Sullivan. They were dressed in Mexican costumes. —28— Third Row: Mike Sullivan, Mickey Anson, John Gilbert, Larry Sparr, Walter Humphery. The 1959—60 football season for Meadow' Grove High ended with a record of 5 losses and 3 wins. Four returning lettermen, David DeCamp, Harlan Weingart, Jerry Wyatt, and Douglas furnished the experience. Freshmen and inexperienced upper classmen were called upon to play leading rolls from the very first game. The freshmen lettermen who were called upon for leading rolls were: Duane Suckstorf, Mike Sullivan, Mickey Anson, Larry Sparr, and Rodger Nelson. Other upper classmen who lettered are Billy Green, and Ronnie Zierke. Meadow Grove felt their lack of experienced depth when in contact with some competitors who were heavy on experienced upper classmen. Noting the progress from the first game with Platte Center to the final with Oakdale, it was evident that the next years are going to balance the losses Meadow Grove suffered while gaining valuable experience. Faith Martin is happily married to Carl Martin, coach of the Yarmouth College. A rally is scheduled on the eve of their biggest game. It is also the evening that Julian Narramore, an old friend of Faith’s, is to appear in a program of Shakespearean readings. Since the two events conflicted there was war between Coach Martin and Mrs. Spear, head of the Speech Department. Faith finds herself right in the middle, especially when Mrs. Spear accuses her of “carrying-on” with Julian. To top Faith’s problems, her maid, Valeria, quits just when her rich Aunt Abby, who has never met Faiths husband, was due to arrive. To escape Carl’s wrath, Julian masquerades as a maid. Then two students from the opposing school. Western State, who had plans of stealing Yarmouth’s trophy, have to masquerade as maids. Finally the real maid arrives. When Mrs. Spear calls in Officer Magoon to arrest Faith and Julian for assault and battery the play really gets confusing. All ends well when Mrs. Spear and Mr. Martin compromise on their time for the program. Sttea “Day After a tiring day at O’neill Contest, 22 seniors and their sponsor Mr. and Mrs. Merklinger boarded a chartered bus for Kansas City, Missouri. After eating breakfast in Saint Louis, Missouri, we journeyed on to Kansas City, where we toured the h'ord Plant. In the afternoon we enjoyed a ball game between the Kansas Athletics and the Cleveland Indians. The rest of the afternoon was spent shopping, or whatever was the most enjoyable for the individual. The evening was spent by attending “Ben Hur” at the Capri Theater. The homeward journey brought a climax to an exciting and memorable day, and one which the seniors will never forget. —40- - 'We w 0ia4' ed 7be “Sacf,: 7be Oceeut cee ftbeeuC Baccalaureate services were held on Sunday, May 15, at 8:00 P.M.
