THIS BOOK BELONGS TO: The 1959 ZJhe ZJrojan published by clT[eaclow (§ rove ZL(,ic)U School Meadow Grove, Nebraska foreword Each time you open the pages of your 1959 TROJAN, you will be met by a host of memories. The TROJAN is meant to help you find the memories of your own personal highlights. If this book helps you recapture those dear high school memories, the staff will feel that this year’s TROJAN is a success. dedication We, the Senior Class of Meadow Grove High School, sincerely wish to dedicate the 1959 TROJAN to our faithful band director, Mr. Sawyer. We appreciate the patience and kindness which he has given us for the past ten years. Mr. Sawyer has been a music instructor for 35 years. In the past few years he has traveled two thousand miles a month to teach music in five schools: Clearwater, Royal, Inman, Page, and Meadow Grove. Meadow Grove is fortunate to have such a fine band director as Mr. Sawyer. Mr. L. H. Sawyer DELAY NATIONAL BANK —2— Board ol Education Back Row: II. T. Weerts, Treas.; Ernest Ellis, Pres.; Burt Berg. Front Row: Everett Collins; George Hamley, Sec; Roy Lyall. Superintendent'a Sfletaacje By the time this annual is in your hands, the Seniors will have graduated from Meadow Grove High School. Some of them will have completed the necessary arrangements for enrollment in a college or some other institution for further training. These people are to be commended for their wise and early choice. Something should also be said for the student who is not going to college. Whether he is not going because, like Thomas Edison, he is not smart enough; or because, like J. C. Penney, he is not rich enough; or because like Henry Ford the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself —do not believe that the chances for achievement are closed to you. Many people have reached a high position without benefit of formal higher education, not because they didn’t have it, but because they persistently and patiently pursued some worthwhile objective. Make good use of your leisure time, talk and associate with good intelligent men, and always have a purpose. Set your goal and work towards it. Superintendent R. H. I, Marilyn Droescher, will my ride to school each noon to Bonnie Cleveland to protect my interests. I, Karen Granger, will my “matrimonial ability” to Sandra Hamley. (P.S. next year is leap year.) I, Sandra Harding, will my dark hair to Carolyn DeCamp so she won’t have to put a dark rinse on hers. I, Kathleen Kuchar, will my tendency to lose my temper in a volleyball game to Marjorie Meyer. I, Sandra Lewis, will my taste for Pizza Pie to Lynda Black. I, Bonna Margritz, will my popcorn machine to the Pep Club to make their own popcorn. I, Kathleen Meyer, will my ability to hit a Coca-Cola glass to whoever thinks their aim is that good. I, Jerry O’Banion, will my interest in distant towns to Dennis Dusel. I, Milan Praeuner, will my good standing with the patrolman to Jack Wynn. I, David Schinck, will my map of the road to Elgin to Doug Ellis. I, Leslie Sparr, will my ability to get to school bright and early (8:59) to Billy Green. I, Rodney Suckstorf, will my athletic ability to chew gum to Miss McNamee. I, Roger Suckstorf, will my surplus of Popeye Muscle to Dale Butterfield. The Charles Atlas Book goes with it. I, Gary Werner, will my slow and cautious driving rules to Marilyn Mozer. I, Rachel Wieting, will my everlasting giggle to Elaine Howard. I, Darrell Wyatt, will gladly hand over my nickname, “Peabody”, to anyone interested — Georgia included. To the Student Body we leave this school which, with the minor assistance of the faculty, we have controlled and run for so many months. To our beloved (?) teachers we will all the test papers and long assignments they have so generously bestowed upon us the past 4 years. To the Juniors we leave the answers to the test papers. To the Sophomores we leave our knowledge to use to the best of their ability. To the Freshmen we leave our self-confidence, sophistication and good looks. In Witness Whereof, the parties have hereunto affixed their hands and seals on this last will and testament of the Class of ’59 ___ ' 3orvvr v _NtV Bonna Margritz 3 Sandra Harding r a aA6 QropUecy The year is now 1979 Being hungry after a day of trudging about the city, I decided to go to a restaurant to eat. Looking up, I saw a sign that said “Pizza Palace”. I decided to go in. Whom did I see but Sandra Lewis busy at work. She told me she was the Chef here and that she and Bonna Margritz were joint-owners. The only trouble was that Bonna ate up all the profits. While I was waiting for my supper, I picked up the paper. In big headlines I saw that Leslie Sparr, now a fireman with the Rescue 8 Squad, had saved 4 lives in a burning motel. Turning to the entertainment section, I saw that Karen Granger is the owner of a T.V. Station, K.A.R.R. Turning the page and reading on, I saw that Darrell Wyatt, now a famous architect, was appointed by the president to redecorate General Grant’s Tomb. Looking down the page, I saw an advertisement describing Kathleen Kuchar’s art exhibit featuring her famous “Koocherama” style. Next my eye caught a large picture titled “Hubert Wins First Prize At World Fair.” Hubert comes from Roger Suckstorf’s successful hog farm. Liking music with my meal, I played the juke-box and guess what I heard. It was none other than Milan Praeuner singing his latest hit, “The Five and Ten Cent Store.” As I was finishing my pizza, I looked up and saw Mrs. Henry enter. She joined me at my table and told me about her recent trip to Meadow Grove where she had learned the following: Marilyn Droescher was happily married and joint owner of Cobb Motors. David Schinck went right to the top of his job; he is washing windows on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building. Using her singing talent to the greatest ability, Rachel Wieting is singing lullabies to Christopher Shane. Cary Werner was at Wayne State for ten years trying to get his Bachelor of Arts Degree. No doubt he will continue to be a bachelor and show the girls his arts. Kathleen Meyer is a successful nurse and living in her dream home which she planned in Home Ec. Jerry O’Banion is working in the Elgin Watch Factory trying to take the tick out of a watch. Sandra Harding is assistant manager of the California Bank of America. In her spare time she is writing a novel, “How to Grow Money on Trees.” Rodney Suckstorf has the girls running in circles. He’s coach of the women’s track team. I was very pleased with the information that I had received today about the Class of 1959. However, while in school they showed promise of accomplishing great things. — 12— unior Lynda Black Evelyn Humphrey Bonnie Cleveland Carolyn Larson Carolyn DeCamp Gloria Larson David DeCamp Kayleen Larson Dennis Dusel Jill Mather Georgia Grant Marjorie Meyer Billy Green Marilyn Mozer Sandra Hamley Imogene Scott Janet Horrocks Arlyn Suckstorf Elaine Howard Jeanette Urban —13— Claudia Wauer Harlan Weingart Jack Wynn In the fall of 1958 the twenty-three members of the junior class returned to Meadow Grove High School with only two years to go till freedom. We Seniors and our sponsor, Mrs. Henry, went on our sneak day. We left Meadow Grove at 6:00 A. M. bound for Lincoln and Omaha by chartered bus. We stopped in Seward for breakfast and got into Lincoln at 9:30. W'e then went on a tour of the Capitol. Highlights of this were visiting the State Legislature, which was in session, and going to the dome which was fourteen stories up. From there we went to the State Historical Society building on the University of Nebraska Campus. We then ate our dinner at the Student Union. After dinner we went on a tour of Morrill Hall Museum. In it we saw all kinds of prehistoric, stuffed animals, some dating back 35 million years, and other animals of every description. W'e also visited the Theater of the Stars in the Ralph Mueller Planetarium. The rest of the afternoon found the Seniors scattered throughout Lincoln doing whatever they wished. We left Lincoln at 6:00 P. M. to go to Omaha where we attended the beautiful Ice Capades. We arrived back in Meadow Grove at 3:00 A. M. tired, but happy. littery In the fall of 1955, fifteen bright-eyed freshmen started on the road to graduation. Leading us was Darrell Wyatt. Mr. Merklinger was our sponsor. During the first semester we lost Vivian Svehla, but gained Sandra Lewis. Gary Werner was elected as president to lead us through the sophomore lap. Mrs. Rice was our guide. Charlie Barton did not return to our ranks, but Milan and Leon Praeuner and Richard Wichman joined. We started on our third lap led by Kathleen Meyer. Coach Anderson sponsored us. Leon Praeuner did not return. Charlie Barton was with us for a few months. Karen Granger joined our ranks in the winter. We presented our class play November 22, “If Mother Only Knew.” In May we gave the seniors a lovely banquet. We came back strong for the fourth and final lap with Karon McKnight as president and Mrs. Henry as our sponsor. Judy Masterson joined our ranks for several months. Richard Wichman left the class, and Karon McKnight left to become Mrs. Eldon Wilson. In the spring we presented three one-act plays, “The Happy Journey to Camden and Trenton,” “If Men Played Cards As Women Do,” and “It’s Cold In Them Thar Hills.” In May the juniors gave us a very beautiful banquet, the theme being, “W'ith A Song In My Heart.” We finally reached our goal.
