1957 z rojcin Published by Seniors of Meadow Grove High School Meadow Grove, Nebraska foreword This year the TROJAN was planned to record the highlights of your life as a lrojan in 1956-57. Each time you look through these pages you will remember the happy days you spent at Meadow Grove High. We, the lrojan staff, hope you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed planning it for you. Our school mascot, the lrojan, appears throughout the book to remind you of the lrojan spirit that is forever present at MGHS. CLASS WILL SLNIOH CLASS CLASS PROPHECY UNDERCLASSMEN GHADES MUSIC ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS SNAPSHOTS First National Bank ADVERTISEMENTS n We, the annual staff, dedicate the 19d7 1110JAN to our parents in appreciation of the many privileges they have provided for us. I he foremost of these privileges is the opportunity to attend high school. We are now prepared for a higher education and to meet more successfully many of life’s problems. As this is our last year of school, we will be confronted with a new world in which we will not have our parents to guide and protect us. Our wish is that with the advantage of a high school education we will make our future successful. There can be a very useful purpose to such reflective thinking if the characteristics of these outstanding students are now applied to yourself in your present situation. I might take this opportunity to state that the class of 1957 has furnished future classes with a record, not unattainable, but certainly something to work toward. Kalph H. Merklinger, Sup’t. September 1953 brought seventeen bewildered freshman to Meadow Grove High School. Mr. I.amont 1.arson was our sponsor and Mike Daniel was elected president. Joyce Duchow entered our ranks at mid-semester. Several members took an active part in athletics. As sophomores we had shed a little greenness and knew our way about better. Suzanne I erry joined us and Mr. Larson was again our sponsor. Ralph McClatchey left our class at the second semester. Besides the usual hayrack party we presented the junior class play, “The Baby Sitter.” In May we were hosts for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Suzanne Terry left us at the beginning of the year and later on Bonnie Niles dropped out of school to become Mrs. Gary Kuchar. We had the pleasure of escorting the senior class to their places to receive their diplomas. I he final year, was now upon us. Mr. Ander- son became our sponsor and Bob Oldand was elected president. Our play, “'The Ghost Parade”, was successfully presented on March 29th. In April we took off on our “Sneak Bay” which was a welcome change for everyone. On May 3, we were royally treated to a banquet by the juniors. Commencement suddenly caught up with us on May 14. As we came to the end of our high school days our only wish was that the future years would be as successful as the last four. Now it is 1980. While thinking about the class of 1957, 1 fell asleep to the gentle lulling roar of car engines. Suddenly, I remembered that the class of ’57 was-holding a class reunion. So I started on my tour to see what each was doing. Helen Pulley is now with the world’s largest airlines, “The United”. She is working out of the Minneapolis office but has just asked for a transfer to Hattie Creek, her favorite town. Vernon Acklie is working on the farm with his dad. He still makes trips north of Meadow Grove to see his ex-passenger of high school days. Joyce Uuchow is now' teaching in a Lutheran mission in New Guinea. She has learned that the teacher’s salary isn’t the best to be earned. Mike Daniel has set up a national system of Ford shops of his own with headquarters in San Francisco. He is still as loyal as ever to the Fords. Jerry Lewis is a Nebraska game warden residing in Meadow Grove, lie is especially after the hunters that get their limit OUT of season. Kay Wilson is a professional singer with top billing for the Grand Opera in New York. Hob Waechter owns King’s Hanch in Texas. His foursons are studying law, hoping to become judges. Bob Odland is a mechanical engineer and Northeast Nebraska’s most eligible bachelor. He is making plans for a dam to be built on the Elkhorn Hiver, which will bring prosperity to all farmers of the Meadow Grove vicinity. Karen Novotny is married and living in Tilden as a mechanic’s wife and the mother of twelve children. She spends her leisure time playing piano accompaniments for would be musicians of Tilden. Larry Berg is playing for Nebraska Giant’s Basketball Team. No one has yet beaten his all-time high point record. Kay Shenshew is living in Norfolk as she is in charge of the County Assistance Office in Madison County. Lorna Linse runs a home for bachelors. Her food attracts their attention and she can’t find enough room for all of them. Larry Linse is an Admiral in the Navy. He isn’t officially married as he has a girl in every port and can’t choose a favorite. Becky liamley married a movie producer and is living in Hollywood. She has several children and is a chief-nurse on M. G. M.’s movie lot during her spare time. John Denny is the owner of the largest country club in northeast Nebraska. He manages the activities program. To the boys disgust, he is known to favor the girls. Carole Horrocks is teaching school at Meadow Grove. During school vacations she gives hot-rod driving and first aid lessons to the teen-agers. • -12- Meadow Grove News Meadow Grove Co-operative Ass’n ‘junior First How: Robert Alyea, Phyllis Fllis, Sheriene Feldmann, Eddie Ferry, Doran Horn. Isabel (Norma Pierce) persuades Patty to sell her novel to pay for the typewriter. Artie (Eddie Humphrey), who drums on everything he sees, creates such a commotion that Patty’s diary is sent to the editor instead of the novel. The diary shakes the town like an explosion. It tells what Patty’s father (Doran Horn) and her mother (Phyllis Ellis) have said, also that Mrs. Nixon (Sherlene Feld-mann) spends all of her husband’s (Royce Saltz) salary on hats. Monica (Ramona Matney) and Louella (Louise Larson) are high school friends. Monica is always making plays to snare Harney (Royce Saltz).
