Merklinger who has faithfully and willingly fulfilled his duties as the senior sponsor for four years. It is our greatest desire to now show our appreciation for the good influence he has had over our high school days. 2 Superintendent’s Message Again it is time to issue a statement filled with profound verbiage declaring my and our dreams and goals; to say nothing about concealing our idiosyncrasies, malevolences, and less worthy ambitions. Declining to comment upon the frailities and successes of the present senior class, let me instead say---Good luck, the best of everything, and may the heavens help you. H. W. Mr. Merklinger was our sponsor for the first lap of our journey. During that lap Karen Means fell from our ranks. By the time the second lap came around, we had lost Donna Praeuner, who transferred to Battle Creek, and Roberta and Delores Wilcox, who moved to Norfolk. Mr. Merklinger was again our guide. Coming back for our third lap, we were missing one more member, Rose Lewis. That year we presented our junior class play, The Whole Town's Talking, with Mr. Larson directing. Shortly afterwards Don Carr left our ranks. Mr. Merklinger, with whom we were very familiar, was once again our patient and kind sponsor. Near the end of the year we gave the seniors a wonderful banquet. We came back strong for the fourth and final lap minus another student, Robert Jensen. We presented the successful play, The Line of Scrimmage with Mr. Adams, our director. We were all very excited and nervous the night we went up to receive our diplomas. We knew we had reached one goal, but the hardest one was ahead. We sincerely hope that each and every one of the seniors of 1955 will be a huge success in whatever they do in the years ahead. a CLASS WILL I - Jean Alyea - leave my center front position to Carole Horrocks. 1 - Lloyd Avery - leave my class ring in M.G.H. In Witness whereof, the parties have hereunto affixed their hands and seals on this last will and testament of the Class of 1955. Jean Monson ' Sherry Wynn Carl Mandel 10 CLASS PROPHECY Old Father Time, in preparing to make another trip around the world, happened to look into the mirror. He saw what anyone could expect to see on the face of a busy old man-deep wrinkles and tired looking eyes. Looking once again into the mirror, he reflected his life forty years ago. He remembered seventeen previous M.G.H.S. seniors, who were having a class reunion. It was interesting to inquire what different ones were doing for an occupation. His further inquiry showed that Jean Alyea was a lieutenant in the Air Force married to a private. Who gives the orders? Gary Kuchar was a noted experimental jet pilot with a hobby of making souped up paper air planes for school kids. Lloyd Avery was now Decca's famous singing star with Kermit Larson's orchestra accompanying him. Dean Howard, who now has a briefcase with wheels, acts as Lloyd's agent. Sherry Wynn is Dean's faithful, patient secretary, and he hasn't succeeded in convincing her that she would make an excellent housewife. Charles Dahl was a successful farmer owning several purple cows which give chocolate milk. His steady milk customer is Barbara Dreger whose little ones will drink nothing but chocolate milk from purple cows. Charles's chief competitor, Albert Nelson, insists that his purple cows give 1 666 pound more chocolate milk than Charles's. To prove his point he engaged a famous scientist to make experimental tests for his cows and Charles's! Albert found out that he had a lavander cow! Carl Mandel delivers milk for Charles to the urban folks. Carl is considered old fashioned by Policeman Jerry Daugherty because he stops for people to cross the street. Sharon Goulding, Jerry's assistant, handles the more nerve racking cases. Jerry's nerves are bad! He can't seem to stand those young speedstes. The judge, Jean James, of the juvenile court is very severe on those young speed demons who stop for pedestrians. Her theory is: don't hit them; then someone has to pick them up. Such disturbances are hard on Jerry's nerves you know ! ! Bruce Horn is now heavy weight champion of the light weight class. He's done quite well, has been knocked out every bout. Quite a record! Donna O'Banion is a well known referee who insists that if there's to be any unnecessary striking done in the ring, she'll do it. Only one spectator has ever been known to bother her; that person is Janet Warrick, now an old maid. After bedding down her canaries, she brings her knitting along to the boxing bouts. She is making sweaters for an old maid's home operated by Jean Monson. All women who aren't lucky enough to catch a man go there. Jean gives lectures on how to catch your man. Why wasn't she successful? That's a good question! Feeling satisfied that he had seen all the seniors of 55 he continued his yearly journey. Time waits for no man. 1 1 Sneak Day At 11:00 on the evening of April 21, seventeen Meadow Grove seniors prepared for a long but hilarious trip. With several underclassmen on hand we received a bang up send off. Everyone was feeling very energetic until we reached Omaha about 2:30 a.m. Almost everyone snatched a bite to eat after which we continued our journey. During this lap almost everyone slept and Friday morning at 7:30 seventeen tired looking seniors and their sponsors were struggling to keep their eyes open to see the sights. After breakfast we were taken on a tour of General Motors Company which everyone enjoyed and will probably not quickly forget. Some of the seniors then went to the Art Museum and observed many interesting things. The afternoon found seniors scattered throughout Kansas City seeing all that their eyes could see. Girls, of course, were shopping; boys were doing whatever came to their minds ! ! Friday evening found the seniors seated at a major league baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Athletics. This event was one which everyone enjoyed immensely and will long remember. Leaving Kansas City at approximately 11:30 p.m. almost everyone was ready to sleep and let sleep. Omaha was our only stop before reaching home. Here we obtained a few refre shments. Good Old Meadow Grove once again received seventeen tired but happy looking seniors returning from a wonderful sneak day. Commencement At 8:00 p. m. on Sunday, May 15, seventeen seniors donned caps and gowns to get ready for their baccalaureate services. Miss Kay Wilson played .Largo for the processional and recessional. Reverend H. H. Houchin gave the baccalaureate sermon on Beliefs that Count . Mr. Leonard Sawyer played a trumpet solo, and LuNette Wieting played a trombone solo. After the semester exams on Monday and Tuesday, the seniors again donned their caps and gowns for commencement exercises. The processional and recessional, Pomp and Circumstance, were played by Karen Novotny. The invocation was given by H. H. Houchin. G. E. Turner, Superintendent of Lancaster county, gave the address on The Challenge. Vocal solos were sung by Roger Wieting. The eighth grade was presented by Mrs. Malmberg and given promotions by Ernest Ellis. Superintendent Adams presented scholarships to Janet Warrick, valedictorian; Barbara Dreger, salutatorian; and Jean James. The band award went to Jean Monson. Two juniors received awards: Dale McClatchey, athletics, and Barbara O'Banion, scholarship. Bruce Horn and Jean Alyea received athletic awards. Mr. R. H. Merklinger, principal and sponsor of the senior class, presented the class of '55 and Ernest Ellis presented the diplomas. After the benediction and recessional the graduates of 1955 received congratulations. Out of twelve class members, eleven were represented in the cast of the FOOLPROFF MURDER. When Dunstan Trahan's secretary, Shirley Hoyt, came on ahead to open up their summer home, she meets Mrs. Percy Walter, a nosy neighbor, and hires a colored maid, Vista. When Dunstan arrives with his wife, Violet, they find the lights out and Shirley gone. They find a murder has taken place and Dunstan, a prominent novelist, decided to write a book about it. Chris Cross, a dumb detective, comes to solve the murder of Julie Bennett, a young writer. Paul Merritt, a young man who creates suspicion, comes to see Shirley. Lottie Allison, comes to see Violet Trahan and falls in love with the detective. Anna Ray, a beautiful young girl who walks in her sleep, causes a big commotion, and Dr. Benedict Birch appears on the floor dead then disappears. The mystery is all cleared up in the last act with Paul and Shirley and Chris and Lottii becoming engaged and Dunstan all ready to start his novel. Rosemary DeCamp was very efficient as prompter. The director, Mr. Larson, was very helpful in making the play a success along with Charles Dahl, stage manager, and Richard Waechter, his assistant. Kay Wilson and Helen Pulley, two sophomores, assisted as ushers. 23 Senior Play The senior class presented their play, Line of Scrimmage , before a full house Friday night, April 1, under the direction of H. W. Adams. The stage setting was unusual as it was divided into two different rooms, an inner office and an outer office. The play was a three act comedy with a time lapse in the third act. As the play started one of the most valuable football players, Stanley Grapplenuesky flunks an English test. He receives 100% on his make up test and Mr. Morrison, the principal, is accused of showing him a copy of the test. Ruby Dinway doesn't help matters any when she says she has had a date with Mr. Morrison. Mr. Keefer of the accrediting association is trying to get Mr. Morrison fired when a helper in the office, Perry Winman, admits he gave Stanley the test and Ruby tells everyone she made up the story about her date with Mr. Morrison. As the play ends, everyone is happy and Mr. Morrison is still principal. Between the first and second acts Lloyd Avery sang a solo, Smilin Through with Jean Monson accompanist. Meadow Grove's six man football team in the fall of '54 was the best the school has put out in its short football history. It earned the fine record of seven wins and one loss. The winning streak was started when Meadow Grove played host to Osmond September 10 and beat them 19-13. The Trojans then traveled to Brunswick September 17 and downed them 52-6. The next victim of the Trojans was anew team to them, Beemer. The game was played there September 24, with Beemer getting skunked 33-0. In the second conference game of the season Clearwater came here, October 1. They left in a depressing mood though, after getting beat 43-13. On October 8, Orchard became Meadow Grove's fifth victory. They never knew what hit them, letting the Trojans win by a 24-2 score. Meadow Grove beat Chambers for the first time in its football history on October 15 by the convincing score of 59-14. Going to Elgin October 20, Meadow Grove played a game that will be remembered for a long time. The score was tied 20-20 at the half but the Trojans went on and led 34-20 at the end of the third quarter. Elgin, being tied with M.G. for the conference championship, caught fire in the fourth quarter and won the game 51-34. It was a heartbreaker to lose, but everyone will agree it was the game of the year. The last game of the season was played October 27 against Oakdale. The Antolopes were beaten 44-6. That left Meadow Grove in second place in the Sandhills Gateway Conference with Elgin coming out on top. The townpeople and students all enjoyed the fine season and are looking forward to the next, hoping it will be better than ever. 27 ENDS Nelson and Horn CENTERS Linse and Dahl ALL-STATE CANDIDATE Dale McClatchey STUDENT MANAGERS COACH Football Schedule Osmond Brunswick Beemer Clearwater Orchard Chambers Elgin Oakdale 13-19 M.G. 6-52 M. FRONT ROW: Layton Wauer, Dale McClatchey, Jerry Daugherty, Lloyd Avery, Jerry Lewis. The Meadow Grove Trojans had a disappointing season in 1954-1955 winning 5 and losing 11. Many of the losses resulted from lack of height. Meadow Grove is losing six lettermen this year - Gary Kuchar, Lloyd Avery, Charles Dahl, Jerry Daugherty, Albert Nelson, and Bruce Horn - but is hoping for a better season next year with the following returning lettermen - Roger Horn, Dale McClalchery, Larry Berg, Jerry Lewis, and Layton Wauer. In the Sandhills Gateway Conference the Trojans finished with an even three win and three loss record, outscoring their opponents 357 to 347.
