It is with the deepest satisfaction that the Annual Staff presents this 1953-54 edition of The Trojan . Our endeavor is to give you a fond remembrance of the days spent in Meadow Grove High School. We hope you will enjoy journeying through the pages of this annual as much as we, the Annual Staff, have enjoyed compiling and publishing it. This yearbook will revive pleasant memories and enable each student to relive his hign school adventures in later years. The 1953-54 Trojan Staff □ To Ralph Switzer, who has been our custodian for several years, we, the seniors of 1954, dedicate this annual. It is our sincere desire to express to him our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the good influences he has had over our high school days. His cheerful willingness to help the students has been deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE These are days of unrest, uncertainty, and unfulfilled dreams. But are they, after all, anymore uncertain than the thousands of years that have already passed? In order for us as participants in the affairs of the Meadow Grove Public Schools to achieve rest, certainty, and fulfillment of dreams, we must strive every year to conduct ourselves in a manner which will develop our skills, test our beliefs, challenge our best, and improve our code. These goals are best achieved at the present time through conscientious attention to school, play, work, and religious beliefs. It is the purpose of the 1954 Trojan to show how these goals have been achieved in part if not entirely. H. W. Adams ANNUAL STAFF STAFF MEMBERS Editor.............. Assistant Editor .. In the fall of 1950, twenty-seven freshmen started their steep climb toward graduation. Ronnie Lewis led us through the trials of the first year and Mr. Weber directed us. Climbing on, we, as sophomores, had learned the ropes of high school better. Therefore, we could really enjoy ourselves. Carolyn Luttman, Evangline Verplank, and Bill Yenter did not return and Raymond Ryan and Mary Wische left later. Jimmie Holton led us and Mr. Weber was again our director. During our third year we achieved many successes. Go West Young Man, the class play, was presented and we treated the seniors at an elaborate banquet in the spring. One evening in May we dressed in formal attire, lighted candles, and ushered the seniors to the place where they received their diplomas. Leaning heavily on our staffs, we proceeded to finish our last year of climbing. We started a small school paper to record the happenings of our last year. The class play, The Antics of Andrew, was presented by a talented cast of seniors in the spring. We were honored at a banquet by the juniors in May. We reached our goal when we stood in caps and gowns to receive our diplomas. Our journey was hard but not as hard as the one we face now. . .the road to SUCCESS. SKIP DAY Bright and early before dawn on April 30, twenty wide-eyed seniors and their sponsors embarked on their glorious two day Skip Day Trip to Storm Lake, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. The first stop was in Sioux City, Iowa, where everyone had a light breakfast. Meadow Grove was the first school to arrive at Storm Lake. The entire group posed for their picture and then proceeded to tour a packing plant and an electric plant. Everyone stopped up town to get their skipper” hats and then went to watch the presentation of the Skip Day queen, king, and attendants. Marilyn Daniel was an attendant. In the afternoon all skippers were treated to a free movie. After supper several skippers” went to the show and a few went to Cobblestone Inn and danced to the music of Jimmy Palmer. In the wee hours the seniors boarded the bus for Omaha. After arriving at the airport, they watched planes land and take off. Many of the thrill-seeking seniors went up for airplane rides. Gate City Steel was the first stop in Omaha, and later in the morning everyone toured the police station and visited a court session. On your own until we leave stated Mr. Adams, so everyone was off for an afternoon of enjoyment in the city. At 10:00 P. M. the seniors, tired, but happy, boarded the bus for their last stop... home. Bob McKnight Delores Nelson Margaret Shenshew Co CLASS PROPHECY In the year of I960, a few years after the class of 1954 had graduated, I decided to take a trip to see how all the members of the class were coming along. So I climbed aboard my space cruiser and took off into space. The first planet Handed on was Mars. To my astonishment I met Kay CBanion, Joe Sanne, and Jim Holton, who had joined the Space Patrol of Uncle Sam. The next planet I stopped on was Uranus. There I saw LaRene Pierce, who was operating a cafe and selling spaceburgers to the people on Uranus. While cruising between planets on my trip, I turned on my spaceovision and saw Roger Weiting with his wife. He was now a famous comedian. I next landed on the moon. There I saw Ronald Gast running around with a magnifying glass studying specimens of moon bugs. After I took off from the moon, I was passed by BobMcKnight in his suped-up flying saucer, which won the Kentucky Derby last year. I next stopped on the planet of Venus. I was surprised when I saw Delores Nelson and her husband, running a hotel. As I walked out of the hotel, I saw Jo Ann Glaze and Margaret Shenshew, who were the only space patrolwomen in the Solar System. I was also surprised when I saw the mechanic working on my cruiser was Daniel Denny. As I landed on Saturn I was met by Marilyn Daniel and her husband. Her husband was a big business tycoon on Saturn. Marilyn told me that Janice Dreger was an old maid living with her sister and brother-in-law up in the hills. I asked Marilyn who lived on the little planet I had passed on my way to Saturn. She told me Joan Weerts was living there doing valuable research work for the militia. I landed on Mercury next and was met by Bill Wilson and Dick Wyatt, who told me they had gone to Norfolk Junior College and had become famous space engineers. My next stop was Jupiter. There I saw Patty Anderson and Marian Fuller rescuing mountain climbers from avalanches with their St. Bernard dog teams. A short distance from Patty and Marian I met Charlette Ellis and Dixie Ferry, who were teaching school on Pluto. They were teaching girls how to catch a man. I then took off for home. A few thousand miles from Earth I met Maynard Mozer, as usual cruising around at late hours with his girl. I then was on home base, which was Earth. CLASS HISTORY We, the remaining nineteen juniors of '53 on September 7, once again filed into the old assembly, (slow and not sure.) We had the same number as we had as sophomores. However, as freshmen we had 24. We elected our class officers as follows: President, Dean Howard; Vice-President, Albert Nelson; Secretary, Barbara Dreger; Treasurer, Kermit Larson and News Reporter, Janet Warrick. Mr. Merklinger was once again our sponsor for the year. During .the first semester we had a hayrack ride which turned out to be quite a On December 1, we presented the class play, The Whole Town's Talking , a farce comedy in three acts, with Mr. Larson as our sponsor. The story concerned a false love affair between Chester Binney, a slovenly, carelessly dressed, impolite, drudge, with Letty Lythe, a famous movie queen. The girls who were chosen as cheerleaders from our class were Janet Warrick and Jean Monson. Several of the boys from our class made the football and basketball teams as did many of the girls the volleyball team. On May 7, we gave the seniors a beautiful Junior-Senior Banquet, which 1 am sure, we all enjoyed. As we near the end of this year, we are looking anxiously toward the next year which will be the last step toward our goal-GRADUATION. The road to success is a long and tiresome one, but we have finished three years and should survive our last year, the one which will seem the shortest. With the help of Annie (Sharon Goulding), the maid, he gets Ethel interested in Chester by leading her and her friends, Lila Wilson (Jean James) and Sally Otis (Sherry Wynn), to believe Letty Lythe (Jean Monson), the motion picture queen, was once in love with Chester. The town gossip, Mrs. Jackson (Donna O'Banion), sees that this news is spread around town. The scene becomes more involved when a taxi-driver (Carl Mandel) leads Mrs. Simmons (Janet Warrick) to suspect Mr. Simmons of stepping out on her. Henry and Chester become alarmed when Letty Lythe and Donald Swift (Bruce Horn), her jealous fiance, comes to town. Everything is straightened out, after several difficulties, when Henry convinces Donald that the love affair between Chester and Letty was made up by him. Everyone is forgiven, including Mr. Simmons, when Mrs. Simmons discovers that he was only taking dancing lessons from Sadie Bloom (Jean Aylea). The play was made a success with the help of our director, Mr. Larson; stage manager, Lloyd Avery; light and sound effect manager, Kermit Larson; stage property manager, Gary Kuchar; assistant managers, Charles Dahl, Donald Carr, and Robert Jenson. Lloyd Avery sang a solo, which was followed by a number from the double duet - Janet Warrick, Donna O'Banion, Jean Monson, and Jean James. Gary Kuchar played several solos on his muted trumpet. The program concluded with a humorous reading by Jean Alyea. FOOTBALL FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS Meadow Grove started their football team off with fifteen players who turned out for the first practice under Charles Anderson, the new coach. On September 18, the Trojans played Brunswick, their first home game. Meadow Grove led most of the game, but the Blue jays began to spell trouble in the last quarter to make the final score a tie 19-19. We lost Daniel Denny in this game because of summer illness. Joe Sanne was also taken out because of badly bruised bones. We then traveled to Randolph on September 25 for a nonconference game. Meadow Grove was beaten 47-18 and also lost the regular center, Kay O'Banion, who broke two bones in his foot. On October 9, we played Orchard, the top team in the league at that time. Meadow Grove, being fired up after a big pep rally, played their best game of the season. With Orchard leading by one point at the half. Meadow Grove went on to beat the Orioles by a 24-19 victory. Our last game of the season, we overturned Oakdale with a score of 57-12. The reserves saw lots of action and gained a great deal of experience in this outing. The football squad is very proud of the pep club for the very fine rallies that they put on for us at every football game. This greatly encouraged the team. It is our hope in years to come that Meadow Grove will have a fine pep club such as they had in the year of '53-'54. The fellows also want to express their thanks to the student managers, Jerry Lewis and Layton Wauer, for their help throughout the season.
