Wayne State College CLASS HISTORY It was in the tail of '49 that twenty freshmen entered the Meadow Grove ranks, but it was not until September 20 that they became full fledged Trojans. General Ballantyne ruled us for the first year, with Colonel Donna Rae Daugherty, at the head of the ranks, he was helped by, Lt. Colonel Barbara Hamley, Major DeVoe Fischer, Captain Barbara Osborn, and Lt. Bob Warrick. At the first of the semester, Katherine Van Dieken transferred to the Stanton Unit. Barbara Osborn had also been transferred, but to Norfolk when we began in '50. Wayne Pfaff joined us for a few short weeks but soon moved on. General Ballantyne was again at the head of our unit with Jim Lewis as Colonel. Bob Warrick had advanced to Lt. Colonel, and DeVoe Fischer remained Major, with the added job of news reporter. Wayne became our Lt. with Lotus Weingart taking his place when he left. Jo Ann Jensen joined the ranks in the spring of the year. Our regiment marched on with Delilah Sellin being discharged, Elnora Rahmeyer and Gary Schultz transferred to a different unit, and Allan Buehner joining the forces. Later in the year Harlan Kinney also became a member. We had a new General, Mr. Adams, with Stanley Sanne our Colonel and John Lewis now held the rank of Lt. Colonel, Allan was our Major and news-reporter, and Jim Lewis Lt. Entertainment was given to the other regiments when we presented the play Who Wouldn’t Be Crazy.” All of the group enjoyed the U. S. O. entertainment of the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Well now we're in our last year. We were sorry to have DeVoe Fischer leave our ranks, but we're happy to welcome Mr. Adams back as our General. Bob Warrick has advanced to Colonel and Stanley Sanne fell back to Lt. Colonel. Other officers are; Darlene Duhachek Major, and News Reporter, and Allan Buehner, Lt. We are all looking forward to the day when we can leave our regiment and enter the wide world, and yet we feel disappointed, leaving the buddies we have had these four years. In Witness Whereof, the parties have hereunto affixed their hands and seals on this last will and testament of the Class of '53- President Bob Warrick Vice-President Stan Sanne Treasurer Allan Buehner Secretary-News Reporter Darlene Duhachek CLASS PROPHECY One dark night as old Father Time was wandering through the cemetery, he chanced to see the tombstones of the Class of ' 53. As he looked upon them, the years fell away and he saw them in life's prime. He remembered best an election year when Robert Hopkins, the famous orator was running for re-election to the Senate. This Nebraska Senator had really made a name forhimself all over the nation. He also remembered how Robert Warrick, who remained a strong Democrat, no longer discussed politics because his Republican wife ruled the roost and sometimes ruled the rooster. Going on, he saw Elna Mae Weerts auctioneering cows to Donna Rae Daugherty and her husband, who -ran a dairy farm. They specialized in cows that gave chocolate milk. Elna had also taken up hog calling. Eudell Feldman was an actor on television. His specialty was love scenes with Darlene Duhachek (carry over from Junior play). Darlene was married to a man 35 years her senior, who never drove over 25 miles an hour, (quiet a difference, huh?) Father Time’s thoughts now wandered to Lotus Weingart, who had just returned from her favorite foreign country, Japan. She had taken up lecturing in the U. S. since Pierre deserted her at a fashion show in Paris. This reminded him that Sherry Volk had been very successful in the manufacture of corsets, to conceal your wiggle. He probably was most surprised at the thought of Bill Arrison making delicate time pieces and Jim Lewis being heavyweight boxing champion of the world. As old Father Time continued to reminisce, he saw Erwin Fichter in Club Tahiti. It seemed he had taken over for Tommy Dorsey, with Allan Buehner as his chief vocalist. Still looking into the past he saw Jo Ann Jensen now seated in Madison Square Garden listening to her son tell of the perfect class of '53. Barbara Hamley was happily married living on a chicken farm raising broilers. Surprisingly enough StanlcySanne was teaching commercial courses in M. G. H. S. His favorite class was typing, and his favorite warm-up sentence is, Now is the time for all you Jokers to stop shooting paper wads. ' Harlan Kinney was a bachelor, running his dad's tavern, No MEN Allowed. Strictly soft drinks. Thinking back, he thought of John Lewis, who was president of the R.R. and had done more for the children living on the opposite side of the tracks than anyone else. Now that he had seen in his mind all the Class of '53, Father Time passed on his way feeling remorseful that these fine, wonderful, energetic people were no longer living. In September, 1950, twenty seven freshmen started the long, hard climb toward their goal, Graduation. The first steep hill was our freshman year. We elected Ronnie Lewis, as our President; Janice Dreger, Vice-president; Dixie Ferry, Secretary and news reporter; and Bob McKnight, Treasurer. Mr. Weber was our sponsor the two years. On October 3, we reached another obstacle-initiation day. We all managed to live through it however, and later enjoyed!!! several other parties. We were sorry that Dixie Ferry and Maynard Mozer could not be with us for a while because they became ill with rheumatic fever. Mary Wesche and LaVonnc Roder joined us as we were nearing the end of our Freshman year. We rested a while and then resumed our journey. As sophomores we knew the ropes of high school better and could really enjoy ourselves. Carolyn Luttmann, Evangeline Vereplank, and Bill Yenter did not return to travel with us. Raymond Ryan and Mary Wsche left us later. We elected Jimmie Holton as our new president; Joe Sanne, vice-president; Joan Weerts, secretary; Kay O'Banion, treasurer; and Raymond Ryan news reporter. We stopped again for another summer vacation, but were glad to return in the fall to become the juniors of M. G. H. S. We gained two new class members, Marian Fuller and Daniel Denny, but we lost Joe Dusel. We started the year off by electing our officers which were as follows: president, Dick Wyatt; vice-president, Marilyn Daniel; secretary, Joan Weerts; treasurer, Daniel Denny; and news reporter, Dixie Ferry. As tokens of all our hard work, we ordered our class rings, with which everyone seemed to be well satisfied. In September we had a party at the Yellow Banks. In December we gave the play Go West, Young Man! In the spring we gave a Banquet for the Seniors. The cheerleaders from our class were LaVonne Rodcr and Dixie Ferry. Several of our boys were on the football and basketball teams. Miss Duthie was our sponsor the first semester, and Mrs. Faubel was our sponsor the second semester. We have just one more year to go; then we will have reached our goal. And when we stand with caps and gowns, we will see that our hard journey has been only a short part of a much longer, much harder journey-the road to SUCCESS. The Bass Drum is at it again, must be Thursday. Mr. Leonard Sawyer is here to lead those cherry kids in their squeeks and squawks. Once in a while we get taken out in the morning and used for practice under the direction of Bob Warrick, that is, if the tooters get out of bed in time to come down. Pep Band is a time I enjoy for that bunch really pours it on their marchers, and I do enjoy the part I play to help others keep time. I really had fun when we went to Norfolk for Navy Band Day, Wayne for their Homecoming Game, and to O'Neill for the contest. I am certainlly going to be sorry to lose those friends of mine that are played by seniors. They have really become a part of this group but of course there will be new friends and beginners, and my friends, the other instruments, would appreciate it if a lot of new ones came in to keep us company. I,the Bass Drum, look out upon this group and promise many enjoyable hours of entertainment in band music for you in the future as you have heard in the past.
