In the fall of ‘44, sixteen green freshmen sneaked into the assembly room, with embarrassed walk and manner. In the fall of ’46 ten sauve and sophisticated Juniors strolled into the same room. Of the original group, Eugene Werner, Leon Sellin, Esther Swarm, Phyllis Kleider, Jim Schurman, Charles Jenkins, and Deon Dreger have left our ranks. Class officers this year were: Milton Pugh, Pres., Norman Wright, Vice-Pres., Bob Werner, Secy., and Arnold Werner, Treas. Miss Stauffer was sponsor. Meadow Grove High will have a small but outstanding graduating class in 1948. Special events this year were the Junior-Senior Banquet, with “The Old South” as theme, and the Junior Play, which is summarized below. MYSTERY IN THE LIBRARY The Editorial Staff of the college paper, in session on a dark and stormy night in the college library, finds itself involved in a mysterious affair which is to have national significance. The terrifying events which break up the meeting are at first accredited to a fraternity initiation, then taking place in the gym. Gradually it becomes apparent that some force, entirely alien to the school, is menacing the safety of the students. Dick Martin, and Mr. Hartman found some clues and while solving the mystery became seriously involved. With the help of Inspector Burke and his men and the “always present” Annie Goopy, the mystery was solved and no one was hurt. ______________— _ First Row, Left to Right: Dale Ellis, Donald Sparr, Everett Marquardt, Harold Koetter, Lester Lieswald, Orlin Stolle, Jerome Staub. In the fall of nineteen forty five, six girls and nineteen boys enrolled as greenheads in the freshman class. As the class officers of these greenheads we elected Don Sparr as President, LeOra Wieting as Vice President and David Holtman as Secretary and Treasurer. After our initiation we then were full-fledged Trojans. We had Mr. Richard Hall for sponsor the first semester and Mr. Frank Lee for sponsor the second semester. Before the year was over, we lost one girl, Lois Nierman, and two boys, Dean Fisher and Lloyd Terry, but we gained Jerome Staub to leave us a total of twenty three. After three months of leave from Meadow Grove High, these twenty-three Trojans enrolled as Sophomores. This year we elected Abe Lewis as President, Dale Ellis as Vice President, Daphne Collins as Secretary, and LeOra Wieting as Treasurer. We had Mr. Wayne Galyen as sponsor for the first semester and Mr. Lawrence Retzlaff as sponsor for the second semester. This year we lost David Holtman, but gained John Yenter, which still left us a total of twenty-three to be the Junior Class of nineteen forty seven. ? About three weeks later, seventeen frightened freshmen were initiated and emerged full-fledged Trojans. Late in October we had our first school-sponsored party. It was a great success as were two other parties later in the school term. The class officers were President-Junior Monson, Vice President, Jack Warrick, Secretary and Treasurer, Patt Daniel. Early in the second semester, a new member enrolled in our class, Wilma Lyalls, who had been living in Idaho. Miss Jean McCaleb was our class sponsor the first semester and Miss Amber Richards was our class sponsor the second semester. UVVWx .... Under the expert guidance of coaches Wayne Galyen and Lawrence “Sonny” Retzlaff, the Trojans this season emerged from a four year slump to go on a real winning spree. After playing together as the first five for two years, Milt, Arnie, Darrell, Jim ana Bob demonstrated some smooth efficient basketball playing this winter. Three trophies were added to our collection, the Cornbelt Conference, the Cornbelt Tournament and the District Runner-up. Bob and Milt also made the all-conference Ten. The Second Team turned in some fine performances also, and indications are that some of these boys will be promoted to the first team next year. Purchase of a new electric scoreboard has added much to local in- terest in the games. 1946-47 Basketball Schedule Dec. 3 Winside 29 30 •Feb. 5 Clearwater 24 27 Dec. 6 Sacred Heart 43 20 •Feb. 6 Battle Creek 21 24 Dec. 15 Oakdale 11 74 Feb. 7 Neligh 17 25 Dec. 17 Neligh 24 14 Feb. 11 Clearwater 26 37 Jan. 3 Petersburg 30 51 Feb. 14 Ewing 18 27 Jan. 7 Battle Creek 26 27 Feb. 18 Elgin 19 27 Jan. 10 Tilden 19 36 Feb. 21 Madison 22 25 Jan. 14 Oakdale 14 36 Feb. 24 Norfolk Res. 32 25 Jan. 21 Petersburg 24 44 •Feb. 27 Wausa 19 30 Jan. 25 Norfolk Res. 24 22 •Feb. 28 Plainview 32 35 Jan. 28 Winside 45 21 •Mar. 1 Hartington 23 20 Jan. 31 Tilden 21 25 ( indicates tournament games) 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 d 0 0 0 NORFOLK COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Over Hutchinsons Store Norfolk, Nebraska Complete business training in the following courses Stenographic, Secretarial, Dictaphone, Civil Service, Bookkeeping and Accounting, Burroughs Calculator Phone 1103 Low Tuition Rates SEGAR’S CAFE Harding’s and Meadow Gold Ice Cream Meals—Short Orders—Confections—Tobaccos Congratulations to the Members of the Class of 1947 GILLESPIE BROTHERS JEWELERS AND OPTOMETRISTS Headquarters for Properly Fitted Glasses Elgin, Hamilton, and Walthan Watches Zenith Radonic Hearing Aid 324 Norfolk Ave., Phone 170 BASEBALL Baseball, the national game, is also coming into its own at Meadow Grove, especially in the summer months.
