This has been made possible through the guidance and sacrificing of our parents. The members of the class hope to fulfill the wishes in the heart of every parent. We realize the responsibilities we must now face. To our parents we wish to express our sincere “Thanks!” Mr. Bornhoft, our principal, also contributed his help in setting us on the right path of education. We wish him success in his new field of work in the U. S. Coast Guard! To our parents and Mr. Bornhoft we dedicate this “Annual of 1942.” To them we extend our appreciation, our gratitude, and our sincere thanks for their help. With their kindness guiding us and our hopes before us we willingly approach the task that is ours and one that we are certain to perform to the best of our ability. Two soldiers broke rank Donald Zierke and Billy Hash but over the hill we were joined by Velma Clemens. Our company had 26 members. The following fall we again formed rank for our second conquest —two new soldiers fell into step, Bob Cline and Darrel Skeels. Our new commanding officers were: President, Eileen Berg; Vice President, Donna Weik; Sec. Tr., Pauline Schilling, and Sponsor, Mr. Andrews. Before really going into maneuvers we lost Darrel Skeels and Velma Clemens but Jay Wilson signed up making our Company number 27. The third year we started our Conquest of the Junior Grade. We were a little handicapped by our loss of two able soldiers, Cecil White and Donald Carpenter leaving only 25 but we were under capable guidance of our officers: President, Jay Wilson; Viee-Pres., Donna Weik; Sec. Tr., Letha Buffington; and Sponsor, Misses West and Anderson. Our most complicated maneuver of this year was the play “Deacon Dubbs”. On our fourth and last Conquest we began with 22 well-trained soldiers but we lost our sponsor and guiding officer Mr. Bornhoft who is now in officers training in the Coast Guard. Our commanding officers are: President, Reed Dye; Vice-Pres., Lo Gene Collins; and Sec.Tr., LaVona Pugh. Class Motto: Knockers never win: Winners never knock. Class Colors: Blue and Silver Class Flower: Talisman Rose Our final maneuvers, our Senior Class Play and Sneak day, were executed as only well trained soldiers can after conquering fouv grades. Our reward, the Jr.-Sr. Banquet amply filled our ranks with cherished memories. We are at the finishing line and soon each soldier will become an able officer of his own life. —Donna Weik CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 1942 Visit Northeast Nebraska’s only exclusive headquarters for cameras and sporting goods, catering to camera enthusiasts, sport fans, clubs and school teams. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of ’39 the Meadow Grove Recruiting Station was packed with twenty-four new recruits as they were volunteering for service in the declared war for the cause of higher education. Before engaging in battle a unified command was establshed as follows: Commander-in-Chief, Jeanette Kinne; Chief of Staff, Dean Mon-son; Secretary of War, Darlene Becker; Treasurer, Patricia Werner. Mr. Warner was the commanding officer. During engagement in the first encounter we captured a strategic point of higher learning with only two casualties—Darlene Becker who moved to Plainview and Donald Collins, a prisoner of war. However two new recruits joined our division which made up for the loss. These were Janice White of Niobrara and Evelyn Wilson, of Iowa, two able soldiers. With these statistics, which prove a troup decidely united and able, our first year of battle was proclaimed wholly victorious. After an interval during which our brave soldiers received a needed rest our division was reassembled. We had, however, lost another able soldier, Anne Halsey, during this time. There was a shake-up in command and these were the results: Commander-in-chief, Kenneth Galyen; Chief-of-Staff, Flora Mae Kerstine; and Secretary of War, Bob Stewart. Mr. Payne was our able commanding officer. During this next and more decisive engagements there were more casualties Jack Boyer was transferred to Denver, Janice White moved to Niobrara, and La Rue Anstine moved to Beatrice. However, we gained another strategic point. At the end of the term it was inevitable that we would lose three more gallant fighters: La Rene Halsey, Dean Monson who moved to Idaho, and Bernice Weinberger to Norfolk while La Rue Anstine rejoined our ranks. Then came another much needed interval when we stopped to reorganize and stock up for more offensive actions. Many new recruits had volunteered for sendee here. These were Eunice Dahl, Vera Lenz, Donna Nelson, Helen Schutt, and Dolores Rudnick. Another change in command was effected and results are as follows: Commander-in-chief, Gene Phillips; Chief of Staff, Norman Hicks; and Secretary of War, Bob Lewis. Commanding officers are: Miss Bastian and Miss Ilarsch. One decidedly victorious event was the three act play “Ridin High”. This battle is still waging but the enemy we haves suffered no casualties. I am sure that with determination to win education we will inevitably be victorious. —Jeanette Kinne is retreating and as yet for the cause of higher N r CONGRATULATIONS—TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS 1942 GILLESPIE BROTHERS Jewelers and Optometrists Headquarters for Properly Fitted Glasses Elgin, Hamilton, Tavannes and Waltham Watches STEFAN CIGAR CO. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1940, twenty-six privates from “Camp Eighth Grade marched in single file into Camp Freshman.” The troop of privates elected the following officers to lead them through the drills of the first year’s training: President, Leland Schleuter; Vice President, Bernard Osborn; Secretary, Dorothy Jean Ballard; Treasurer, Vance Dunivan. Mr. Warner served as general. During the first year Clarence Werner dropped from our troop of privates. We had a leave of three months but in the following year we came back, this time to march into “Camp Sophomore.” The troop of privates again elected officers as follows: President, Gene Lenser; Vice President, Vance Dunivan; Secretary and Treasurer, Ava Nell Fowlkes. This year Mr. Payne served as our general. During this year Frank Purcell, Charlene Fuller, Leland Schleuter, Kleona Nelson, Edith Stone, Eileen and Armeen Boyer, and Kieth Monson were discharged from our troop of privates, but later in the year, Dick Cloyd marched into “Camp Sophomore,” giving us nineteen privates. We took time out for a few parties, but again took up the drills for “higher education.” Attention Seniors: We’ve two more years of training ahead of us. Mark time and don’t miss a step. With the help of Carl Boschult, president; John Hopkins, vice president; and Mary Lou Ferry secretary-treasurer, we managed to reach the “Isle of Pood Times”, where we held our first party, assisted by Mr. Young. On our trip we lost Alma Fundum, who went to Battle Creek, and Hertha Terry, who left for Denver, Colorado. On our journey we gained, Keith Monson, from Oregon, Helen and Phyllis Shell, and Helen Lyalls. Keith Monson later left school. Included in this group was, Center, Reed Dye Forwards, Harold Cornett and Bernard Osborn; Guards, Kenneth Galyen and Gene Phillips and the other three include Jay Wilson, Bob Lewis, and Gene Lenser. REED DYE A four letter man has been selected for four years straight—one of the big ten in the Tourney’S. He was the high point man of the season. He will be missed next season. HAROLD CORNETT A two year letter man has the title of being the tallest of the team, and got his share of the rebounds. His height will be greatly missed. JAY WILSON Although this was his first year on the team, he showed the best of them up on offense as well as defense. GENE “Rusty” PHILLIPS A two letter man hac another season with the team and will show what a years experience will do. He displayed excellent ball handling and had an eye for the basket. BERNARD OSBORN With two years under his belt and two to go, will show you next year how to play ball. He had a very good eye for the basket and never gave up. KENNETH GALYEN With two years of experience, he will be hard to handle next year. He has a good eye for those long shots, and is an excellent passer. BOB LEWIS Will advance from a substitute to a regular next year. He never gives up and when there is a scramble for the ball, he is always on the bottom. GENE LENSER Also will rise from a substitute to a regular and has a very good opportdmty of being one of the high scorers. Last, but not least, the Student Manager, DALE INNESS, was just like a nurse to us boys. Well, a Doctor anyway. We tied with Tilden for first place in the Conference, losing only one game out of seven. In the Cornbelt Tourney, we got second place. In the Class “C”, we won our first game from Ewing, but unfortunately we got beat by Wausa in the second round. The boys have a big excuse for not going to Lincoln this year, because Mr. Bornhoft, our Coach, was called to service by Uncle Sam just after our first victory in the Cornbelt Tourney. To the team of next year, we wish a season of continuous victories, and a trip to Lincoln. The costumes were very effective this year. They wore white, long sleeve blouses with red corduroy jumpers. The Pep Club plans to organize again next year and to have a larger group. The project of buying things for the club, necessitates the cooperation of all the group—the students and community. The girls took turns at vending confections and fruit at the games. The selling of confections and fruit at the home games made enough money to help pay transportation to the tournaments. The patronage the community gave them was deeply appreciated.
