Robbie Pelster giving a Lewisti The Mead Raiders Football team hit the lowest low and the highest high during the 1987 season. The Raiders had to overcome more than the opponents they played; they had to overcome the loss of a teammate. The Raiders came into the season with the rating of fifth in class D-1. With the loss of Chris Winkelman. the papers felt that the Raiders were still in an emotional shock. The Raiders put their sorrow into dedication to win the State Title. Their first two opponents felt the dedication, as the Raiders exploded to end the games early. The Raiders then went on to end five more games early, including the first round of the Play-offs. In the second round of the Play-offs, the Raiders avenged the last season loss to Bancroft-Ro- salie with a 36-20 victory. The Raiders then meet up with Lewiston. Lew- iston gave the Raiders a very good test, but they passed and earned a spot in the Championship game. The Raiders then went on to prove their dedication to win the State Title with a 58-36 victory over Ansley. The Raiders still feel the pain of the loss of a teammate, but the State Champi- onship helped ease some of the pain. Tackle him, don't dance with him. Doug Langemeier a ride. Boys Basketball For 1988 Year To Be Proud Of” The Mead Boys Basketball team, led by their first year coach Jerry Buck, was in celebrating shock after winning the State Football Championship. The jubulation of this carried right into the basket- ball court for the first two or three games leading right up to the Holiday Tournament. They got last in the tournament out of four teams. They lost to East Butler in the first game by nine and in the second game they lost to Cedar Bluffs by nine. After that tourna- ment, their record was 4-3. This tournament indicated to them that they needed to start playing some basketball. After that they went on a rampage winning thirteen of their last fifteen games including wins over Yutan, Neumann and winning the Conference Tourna- ment by defeating Yutan, for the second time this season. In the final game; when they came from behind by ten in the second half; they won by three points. Mead's season came to a disappointing ending when they lost to Cedar Bluffs in Sub-District play. Mead had a season they could be proud of ending at 17-5. Watch out Michael Jordan' Long time no see Gordy What form Rob Oops, Sorry Doug you can have it” 28 BASKETBALL SHANNON. “What a man ? HIGH ELEMENTARY FIELD A Y 34 BOYS TRACK BOYSTRACK1988 - COACH JON DAHL Boys’ track had a very good turnout this year with 17 participating. There have been new records set in the 400 relay, 1600 meter relay, and the long jump was tied. The old record of 46.91 was set in 1985 by John Van Bibber, Gus Schliffke, Ron Timm, and Scott Pickworth. The 1988 record of 46.3 was set by DOUG LANGEMEIER, KEITH MILLIKEN, SHANNON PICKWORTH, and ROB PELSTER. The 1981 1600 meter relay time of 3:44.2 was set by Doug Johnson, John Konecky, Dave Nygren and Jeff Schultz. The 1988 record breaker of 3:42.6 was set by DOUG LANGEMEIER, KEITH MILLIKEN, JEFF KONECKY, and ALLEN MALY. The long jump was tied by SHANNON PICKWORTH with a jump of 20'8 held by Lee Shires in 1971. JERRY CHARLES a Junior, has qualified for the State Track Meet in the shot put and the discus. CHARLES best effort so far this year is 149 4 in the discus at the ECNC, and a shot put of 47'6Vfe . Dave Anderson, in 1965, holds the record in shot of 49'11% . GIRLSTRACK1988 COACH JERRY BUCK Great improvement from start to finish was evident for the girls track team. Starting the year at the Doane Invite, they finished 10th, but ended the year with a fourth place finish at the District meet. Leading in scoring, senior SHERI HUDDLE, placed in all outdoor meets and advanced to the State meet. Winning or finishing in the top three in her events, high jump, 100 300 hurdles. Sheri clipped 4 seconds off the school record in the 300 hurdles, 47.7 current record, and was among the top six in class C. JODIE ASPER paced the weight events and never finished lower than third in the shot put, while advancing to the State meet. Also doing well in the discus were TERRI LAMPRECHT JUDY JOHNSON. The competitive 1600 relay consisted of members: MELINDA THOMPSON, ANGIE LAMPRECHT, AMY HALBMAIER SHERI HUDDLE, who placed in almost every meet. Alternate MARY ELLISON also earned points in the 100 300 hurdles. Scorers in the 800 were HEIDI GEHRMAN, MELINDA THOMPSON, while CATRINA PARKINS placed third in the 3200 at districts. Sprinter MARCIA GUSTAFSON was hampered by injuries. Loaded with underclassmen, the girlS’ track future seems optimistic.
