The Freshman class of '86-'87 is our third larg- est class. This class consists of seven girls and fourteen boys, whom ore actively involved in the extracurriculars that ore offered to the stu- dents at Mead High School; which include volley- boll, football, basketball, track, FFR, FHR, and mony others. The Freshman class is not new to the school but ore new to the responsibilities and choices that ore given to them; which they ore handling very well. The Freshman hove headed into the new year with goals and high expectations that they os a doss and individ- uals hope to accomplish during the year. FI few of the money making projects sponsored by the Freshman were the half court shot and the sell- ing of Mead Raider duffle bogs. The Freshman held their first class election which resolved in the following: Joy Honson, President; Joson Maly, Vice President; Robert Rim, Secretary; Mike Maly, Treasurer; Joson Givens and Joel Konecky, Student Council. This class with its knowledge and abilities has already mode a lasting impression at Meod and will strive to overcome the obstacles to come in the future. Buddies ot last. The Sovoge smiles! 'The Mead Raiders had a very successful sea- ;on in 1986 because of a total team effort , lead coach Jon Dahl said. The Raiders were ,ioung and proved themselves with an explo- sive offense and a preventive defense. The Raiders proved this during their 7-0 season with a good start in a 48-22 win against Falls City Sa- cred Heart. Following this with a 45-0 devasta- tion of Nebraska City Lourdes, people started to believe in the Raiders. UJinning the next four games against Friend, Ullinnebago, Scribner, and UUaterloo, made believers of almost every- one. Now the Raiders would meet the Cedar Bluffs UUildcats and possibly earn a place in the playoffs. The raiders were successful with a hungry team wanting the playoffs. They proved themselves once again with a 20-12 victory to put them on the road to the playoffs. The Raid- ers started off their three game playoff spree with the Rrownell-Talbot Raiders of Omaha. The papers didn't all agree on who the favorite was to win the game, this shows how evenly mat- ched the two teams were. The game was tight, but the Red Raiders won with a score of 45-32. In the second round of the playoffs the Raiders played the Silverlake Mustangs. This was a long bus ride to Bladen so the Raiders didn't plan on a losing game. UUhen the Raiders came out of the locker room the Sliverlake team and crowd was laughing at them but they weren't laughing after the game. Final score: Raiders-38, Mus- tangs-22. The next opponent was 1 rated Bancroft-Rosalie Panthers. The final score was 22 to 8. This ended the Raiders season. B€CK€R Teacher, Coach, and his greatest love - his family: wife Sharlene, daughter Heidi, and his son Shane. Larry's life cen- tered around his family. Lorry Becker joined the Mead faculty in the foil of 1984 os a physical education teacher and head boys' basketball coach. He and his family purchased a home In Wahoo. Ne. Larry Becker did not have an easy task replacing a former long - term coach, but he attacked the job uuith enthusiasm and dedication. His love for coaching tuas time consuming as he even worked tuith elementary students on Saturdays and featured them during varsity games. His win loss records of his basketball teams are only a small part of his sincere desire to serve youth. He supported not only all athletics but all student activities. Larry Becker learned he had leukemia in the spring of 1985. He fought and won this first battle with the support of his loving family and friends. When it returned during the 1986 - 87 school year, he again gave it his best fight. Just as in sports, you can't always win in life, and Larry passed away May 12. 1987 at the University Hospital in Omoha Ne.
