BEST YEAR EVER FOR RAIDERETTES: 21-3 The girls basketball team closed its season at 21 - 3. Coach Poltack in his first year as head coach at Mead and Coach Gilbreath in her first year as assistant, led the girls to a very successful season. The girls' first game of I the Conference Tournament was against Louisville. The Raiderettes then I defeated Palmyra to win the Conference Tournament. The confident Raiderettes then proceeded to the sub-district touranment and were to play the Waterloo Panthers. The Raiderettes conquered the Panthers and then went on to defeat Brownell Talbott to win their sub-districts. Their next game would be the district finals, this is the time that they had been waiting for all year. They were to play the Scribner Trojans, a very tough team. Coach I Poltack prepared the girls for this game with hard work and some new I strategies. The Raiderettes defeated the Trojans in a very exciting game I that night. They had now achieved their second goal of making it to the I State Tournament. They now had to set a new goal, winning the State Tournament. Their first game was against Doniphan. The Raiderettes won that game and moved on to the semi finals in a game against Kearney Catholic. Kearney Catholic was rated second in the state and would be a tough match. The Raiderettes played a good game but couldn't overtake the Stars. This was a disappointing end to a very good season. The members of the varsity team were, Anita Luetkenhaus, Christine Hutmacher, Shelly Asper, Staci Hass, Lisa Nygren, Ronda Treptow, Kris Hass, Kim McKay, Debbie Nelson, Joie Mueller, Sheri Huddle, LeAnne Gustafson. Other players on J.V. were, Katie Gehrman, Dawn Shook, Denise Push, and Diane Steen. Some team stats are as follows: field goal percent - 41%; free throws - 54%; average defensive rebounds - 23; average offensive rebounds -12; average assists - 11; and average steals - 7. Some leaders in these categories were as follows: leading scorer - Staci Hass - 326; leading rebounder - Staci Hass - 212; leading assists - Anita Leutkenhaus - 131; leading free throw percentage - Lisa Nygren - 68%; leading steals - Anita Luetkenhaus - 46.
