Look Under Comedy for: “Arsenic and Old Lace” Mead Thespian Troupe 1142 presented the classic American comedy “Arsenic And Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring. Set in Brooklyn, the story portrays two aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, who have as one of the “charities” the assisting of elder- ly gentlemen to their promised reward in heaven. Descended from a rather eccentric line of Brewsters, the old ladies are the last of a vanishing family which consists of a nephew, Teddy, who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, a mad criminal type who has an assistant Dr. Einstein, and a third nephew Mortimer, who is the only normal member of the family. Mortimer a drama critic is in love with Dr. Harper’s daughter Elaine. Dr. Harper the minister next door is some what reluctant to have his daughter, date a drama critic. Elaine is more than upset when Mortimer tells her to get out of the house only 15 minutes after he had proposed to her. Mortimer’s sudden change in behavior was brought about by his discovery of his aunts “charity.” This turn of events is complicated by Jonathan’s return when he brings one of his victims into the house.
