One of these experiences was the loss MOTTO: Today's dream is the threshold of tomorrow's discoveries. COLOR: Cream and Maroon FLOWER: Rose of a friend and classmate. His death made the class more mature and brought us closer together; and made us realize that it can happen to anyone, anytime, anyplace, and anywhere. Even though the days seem to drag on, the school year seemed to go by faster than what it used to. Learning to put out a good effort and to work together has been an aspect acquired through school. Now, after years of waiving, the time has finally come for us. Our senior year was filled with a lot of fun, going to prom and going on the senior sneak day to Kan- sas City were a few of the fun experiences, but now it will be hard to leave all the fun times behind, and head into our dreams of the future. Calhoun, on the road. A slow First quarter and inability to generate our offense hurt Mead against Bennington and East Butler. After a disappointing loss to Weeping Water it brought about more unity to the team. Homecoming activities were cancelled because of the death of a teammate, Tom Popish. Mead came back though, and probably played their best game of the year against Conestoga. They came back and lost to Yutan, but finished the year by beating Waterloo and Cedar Bluffs. VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS VOLLEYBALL Mental sharpness, Physical fitness, and Spiritual readiness, were three things stressed by Coach R. E. Haag, in the 1981 season that led the Raiderettes to a 12-4 record. The Raiderettes started the season by losing to Class B Omaha Mercy. From there the season was slow by winning four and losing two and then reaching their peak by winning eight straight games and being- defeated by Wahoo Neumann in the first round Districts. The Raiderettes have one returning letter winner from the 1981 season. There will be eight promis- ing senior prospects, six juniors, nine sophomores, and possibly nine freshmen. The Raiderettes ended the season by being ECNC tournament champs and ECNC Conference champs. They had six girls selected for ECNC All Con- ference Teams. Chris Bergman — First team, Deb Nygren and Patti Johnson — Second team, Robi Black, Julie Behrens, and Amber Nygren were chosen for Honorable Mention. The Mead Raiderettes ended the year with one of the best season records they've had since the start of girls basketball. The girls got off to a slow start with a 4-4 record going into the Christmas vacation. Mead had a 9 4 record going into the Conference Tournament. In the First round Mead blasted Cedar Bluffs 58-30, and in the se- cond round Mead defeated Bennington 47- 43 and in the Championship game they outlasted East Butler in the final seconds to win the ECNC Tournament with a score of 25-24. Mead ended their regular season with a winning record of 14-4 and headed into the District Tournament. In the first round Mead whipped Logan View 54-37, and downed David City High 43-31 in the se- cond round. In the Championship game Mead held on to their 3rd victory over East Butler, dumping them 44-38. Mead then traveled to Columbus Scotus, to challenge Cedar Rapids, in the regional playoff game, but ended up losing in overtime by the score of 45-49. Raiderettes ended their season with a 17-5 winning record. CON- GRATULATIONS RAIDERETTES!!! Through the progress of the season, because of injury that number fell to 7. But with good effort, the team had a lot of suc- cess. Robi Black led the Raiderettes with a total of 110 points accumulated in the low hurdles, long jump, high jump, and the 400 meter relay. Close behind was Kristin Hannan with 99M points ac- cumulated in 100m, 200m, 400m runs, and 400 and 1600 meter relays. The next 2 high point getters were Dawn Hannan with 43!4 and Anita Luetkenhaus with 42V . Robi Black set a new school record of 16' in the long jump and tied her 1981 record of 16.4 in the 100m hurdles. Dawn Parkins set a new record in the 3200m run with a time of 13:314. Mr. Ortgies, Head Coach, was pleased with the overall good effort, and the overall improvement of the limited 7 member team. The good effort showed up when they captured 2nd place out of 13 teams at the Decatur River Relays; and with the seniors gone, the remaining 5 captured 3rd place at Conestoga. Craig placed 1st at the Weeping Water Invitation in the pole vault with his career best of 12T . Calvin ended the season a school record performance in the 1600m run with a time of 4:40.7. Calvin also set a new record in the 3200m run with a time of 10:14.1. Accomplishing career best in the triple jump with a jump of 40'10 and long jump with a jump of 19'3 was Robert Treptow.
