There were only three returning lettermen, and a total of 13 players on the entire squad. The lone victory of the season was over Weston, 27-12. The Raiders lost their first homecoming game since the event started at Mead, four years ago. The de- feat came at the hands of Cedar Bluffs, 48-6. Because of the decline of interest in the football team, it was originally decided, by the school board, to discontinue the football program for the coming year. However, the school board has recon- sidered, and Mead will field a team next year, if there is sufficient interest and a sizeable turnout. Let's go Rich! The Mead Raiders slipped from a vic- torious 1964-65 season as Husker Five Champs to a dismal Fourth place fin- ish in the Southern division of the ECNC conference. The Raiders chances of a successful season suffered when five of the teams top seven players graduated. The Raider Spirit and hustle was not enough to overcome the lack of height and experience. They were able to muster only three victories the entire season. The Raiders also had little success in tournament play as they were elim- inated in the first of the ECNC tourn- ament by Weston 44-40. Homecoming ’65 Eleven boys rushed onto the football field, Octo- ber 22nd, with high hopes of defeating Cedar for a Homecoming victory. Energetic cheers accompanied by beating drums backed the fight- ing team. Cedar’s lead at half-time was not enough to touch the spirit of the Raiders. Half- time marked the announcement of the Home- coming Royalty and the crowd waited tensely. The suspense built as J. Pellan, J. Ziegenbein, D. Washburn and L. Pacula were called onto the field as Homecoming attendants. The crowd grew silent as the big moment approach- ed. All attention was focused on the master of ceremonies, Jim Goodding, who was to an- nounce the king and queen to reign for 1965— Jim Wagner and Margaret Evans. The tradi- tional ceremony marked the fourth Homecom- ing at Mead. King Jim and Queen Margaret witnessed Mead's first Homecoming as Fresh- men. The football battle resumed and once again held the crowd's attention. In spite of the team’s hustle, the Pep Club's encouragement, and all the hopes. Mead fell to Cedar. But the loss was soon forgotten, for the night had just begun! One-hundred and fifty people swarmed into the gym enticed by the mood of beating drums and rhythmic guitars set by the Fremont Intruders. All night the spotlight shone on faces swinging to the super-cool music. Twelve o'clock came, the kids scat- tered, and the empty gym echoed as a mem- ory of where the action is ! 27 We ■|_l 5jEm the idiLdCrTs Senior's poster wins $5 prize sponsored by the Pep Club to create spirit. No more staying extra hours or singing school songs; For now his time has come, and four years doesn’t seem so long. He has found the joy in each achievement; no goal was set too high; Each active day he left behind he'll remember by and by. Today he hates to leave these halls with each memory of his; But tomorrow will he return to where the action is?
