Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1964 volume:

THIS IS OUR SCHOOL WE ARE HERE As we turn the pages of this yearbook, it brings to mind many memories of our past years at school, and also opens the doors of tomorrow. We are now standing on the threshold of accomplishment. Who can predict our impact on tomorrow’s world? This alone challenges us to set our goals high, grasp opportunity, give service, and face life with hearts filled with cour- age and hope. On these pages, you will find our life at M. H. S. in pictures; the years of life ANNUAL PUBLICATION upon which we now place our trust for the Mead Public Schools future. Mead, Nebraska • • 2 WE ARE HERE TO . . . ... develop academic minds, build social lives, gain lasting friendships and meaningful associations. Norman Thorson and Audrey Fick inflating inner tubes at freshman initiation. THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MEMORIES Sophomores busy in typing class. Students spend leisure time in the library. Mr. Miller explains dissecting an annelida to a biology student. Drivers ed. students; Jim Wagner, Dennis Washburn, and Donna Hanson learn special instructions before driving. Green freshmen; silly sophs; jolly juniors; dignified seniors; these adjectives apply to none of us all the time and to all of us some of the time. Each class pursues its particular program, combining activi- ties that are fun-making and fund-making, vying with competition; however, as a student body, the classes lose their individ- ualism, and it's All for one and one for all --the true spirit of Mead High. Senior boys tried their cheerleading skills at the Husker 10 volleyball tournament. Freshman home economics girls enjoy a meal in class. Mead High's annual Awards Night was held May 21., Outstanding awards of the evening were presented to Gay Gustafson, Betty Crocker Award and Outstanding English Writing; Wayne Petersen, Chapter Star Farmer; Terry Radenslaben, Dekalb Award; and Steve Meyer, SWCD Public Speaking Medal. This was the first time the awards have been presented without a banquet preceding. The first beau of the F.H.A. for 1964 was announced by Ruth Svoboda, President of the F.H.A. as Kirby Zicafoose. Kirby received a key chain with the emblem of the F.H.A. engraved on top. AWARDS NIGHT The 1964 F.F.A. Sweetheart was announced by Merlin Fick, Pres- ident of the F.F.A. as Lenore Larson. Her attendants were Jerri Barta and Sharon Houfek. 6 WE ARE HERE TO . . . . . . help you pursue your education by counseling, directing, and assisting you in your search for knowledge. MARY ANN KAVAN . . . OOKING BACK About fifteen students attended playschool for two weeks in the spring of 1952 in preparation for first grade. This was the beginning of twelve years of work. In 1952, under the guidance of their teacher, Miss Margaret Rood, these students began the long climb of continuing edu- cation: Gay Gustafson, Ruth Svoboda, Garwood Vavak, Diana Stoakes, and Bill Nygren. Jack Flagle joined the class in the second grade. Bill Nygren withdrew from the class the same year. Gunther Lipsys joined the class in the third grade, and Judy House came in the fifth grade. Deanne Carlson trans- ferred from country school in the seventh grade and Wayne Petersen came in the eighth grade. As the class of ”64 entered Mead High School in the fall of 60 , we looked through the window and saw stretched before us four long years of hard work before our ultimate goal, graduation, could be obtained. Merlin Fick, Art Lamprecht, Terry Radenslaben, Joyce Carlson, Ronnie Sanders, Melvin Vance, and Bill Nygren joined the class. Betty Peterson also joined the class later in our freshman year. To guide our classes efforts throughout our first year, Gay Gustafson, Deanne u WILLIAM C. NYGREN . . . WAYNE L. PETERSEN . . . Carlson, Judy House, Ruth Svoboda, and Garwood Vavak were chosen as class officers. Joyce Carlson and Terry Radenslaben served on the student council. Entering our Sophomore year, Melvin Vance was elected as president, and Merlin Fick, Joyce Carlson, Bill Nygren, and Terry Radenslaben as other officers. Deanne Carlson and Garwood Vavak represented our class on the student council. Bob Jones joined our class this year. As juniors we found ourselves one year closer to graduation. We began to build up our treasury for the Junior-Senior prom and banquet. Bill Nygren, Ruth Svoboda, Merlin Fick, and Joyce Carlson were elected as class officers. Deanne Carlson and Mel- vin Vance were our student council members. Our Junior Class Play, The Dancing Ghost was a big success and a lot of fun to put on. Bill Nygren, Judy House, and Joyce Carlson received dramatic awards for their outstanding performance. The awards banquet was held and the outstand- ing event for our class was the selection of FFA sweetheart. Candidates were junior girls, and Ruth Svoboda received the honor. To highlight the last month of school, our first prom was held. The Jun- ior Class presented the theme Stairway to the Stars in honor of the graduating Seniors. Gunther Lipsys and Dianna Stoakes were not with us this year. TERRY C. RADENSLABEN . . . RONALD LEE SANDERS . . . 15 RUTH MARIE SVOBODA . . . September 63” found us electing Terry Radenslaben as President, with Garwood Vavak, Ruth Svoboda, and Merlin Fick as other officers. Bill Nygren and Ron Sanders represented the Senior Class as Student Council members. Homecoming was held October 12, with members of the Senior Class as candidates for king and queen. Gay Gustafson and Terry Radenslaben were chosen as king and queen and Ruth Svoboda and Merlin Fick were attendants. Our Senior play, State of Mind came in November. The year was filled with important events like choosing our announcements and our graduation gowns. Deanne Carlson and Melvin Vance did not rejoin the class this year. Mary Ann Kavan and Don Heuerman joined the class as Seniors. On May 1, the Seniors traveled to Colorado for their senior trip. May had come all too soon, and then, looking through the window, we could see that it was not the end, but only the beginning, for graduation was near. Bill Nygren, the class valedictorian, and classmate Merlin Fick march serenely up the aisle to termi- nate their high school career. 16 GARWOOD VAVAK-Chorus 3,4; F.F.A, 1,2,3,4; Class officer 1,4; Class play 3,4; Football 1; Student council 3. THE RAIDERS WIN FIVE, The Mead Raiders finished fourth in the Big Division as their football season ended. Senior Terry Radenslaben, Junior Pat Coyle, and Sophomore Jim Wagner, received All-Confer- ence honorable mention for their outstanding playing ability through- out the year. Terry was the only senior on the entire squad this year. The Raiders started their foot- ball season September 6, 1963, with Ceresco as their first opponent. Mead was considered an under- dog at the beginning of the season, because of the loss of a lot of the first team players, due to their graduation the previous year. The Raiders started out with a loss of 33-0 to Ceresco. The boys gained experience as the season progressed. They picked themselves out of the bottom rating when they defeated Wahoo Catholic. Their next game upped their rating to third place with their victory over Valparaiso. The homecoming game with Nehawka proved to be a decisive victory of 46-6. Our game with Eagle-Alvo took third place rating away from the Raiders and moved them down to fourth place, where they stayed till the end of the season. Those who leave and go on to their chosen professions will look back over their shoulders ev ry once in awhile and remember those wonderful days spAnt at Mead. t s
