Mead demonstrated throughout the season that they could compete with any team in the new league, consisting of the old city league and the former border league. The Panthers provided tremendous excitement for the fans at Joe Albi by coming up with the big plays at the right time. With two minutes left, Bruce McDowell snatched a Dave Rogers bomb and fled a celebrated 76 yards sweeping Mead past the Ferris Saxons 20-16. The Panther explosive backheld struck again as Bruce scored on a 99 yard jaunt, an Albi record, this time against Shadle, 14-7. As well as being the leading Panther scorer, Mead's Bruce McDowell also tied for first place league honors with 66 points. He was also fourth leading rusher with 717 yards Steve Roderick, seventh leading rusher with a total yardage of 638, led Mead's near-miss comeback against North Central with a 71 yard burst before bowing 28-27. At the sound of the hnal gun, the Panthers' season came to a close with a 5-4 record OUR Leogue! Knox. Hoopers Hustle Hustle and team spirit, the major elements of a good basketball team, were in evidence during the year on both junior Varsity and Sophomore teams. The Junior Varsity under the auspices of Coach Hare developed into a well-rounded basketball squad. Their main handicap was their lack of height. This was sorely experienced in the rebound column but this height disadvantage was sufhciently compensated for by their all-out hustling and tremendous desire. These qualities shone through in their games played the first and half of the season. The team was led in the scoring department by Tim Griffin and in the rebounding by Robin Crain. Defensively, Eric Merrick and Pat Bender played excellent defense against the big opponents. Frank lVlyers and Steve Connell were the spark plugs of the spirited team. The Sophomore squad enjoyed a fairly successful season on the scoreboard with big wins against one-fourth of the teams they came up against. The talented team was led by net rippers Tom lVlissel and Steve lVlilIer, while Dave Whitehead was the all-around hustler on both offense and defense. Above right: Mike Houck and Lesley Crandell 'lcheese it for the camera as Julie Parr throttles the Court Jester lJay Keise-r.J Right: Robin Randels, alias the golden cat Hannibal, purrs preciously for her audience. Stars Bloze By the Hick of lVlinnie lVlosby's Bic, a pale pink dragon actually caught fire during the second performance of drama's fall play. But under the heroic command of Herr Brian HOtto Hess, not one pale, pink dragon crumpled into Hames and not one of those zany twentyesix stars were caught falling in the star- studded play UThe Pale Pink Dragon which played in November. It all began. . . Once upon a time, in a mythical kingdom of Caladar we ind that there is a good Princess Pinkey and an evil Princess Pea-Green. King Clement lDan Godseyl and the wicked Queen Contemptua lLesIey Crandell and Debbie Smithl must try to solve the perplexing problem of which is the real heiress to the throne of Caladar. As the plot thickens, we find that Pea Green lJulie Parr and and Jill Haugenl forces the haggy old witch lLesIies Hughesl to turn Pinkey into a pale pink dragon and the villagers llVlike Houck, Connie Crismore, lVlatt Johnson, Nancy lVlacDonald, Monica Weinhandl and Dave Akinsl into bears. But we soon End that this is not another disaster movie, for Prince Hal saves Pinkey and the real heroine Hannibal, the golden cat iRobin Randelsl does away with the Queen and Pea-Green. And as the Court Chamberlain Poutchiekin lJay Keiserl would say, HlVlake way, make way for the real Princess of Caladar, Pinkey. And to all the six hundred spectators happiness returns to lVlead. . . and final peace of mind to the drama class. Dromo 'Heods forthe Hills' l'Headin' for the Hills during the lklanuary Thaw was the peculiar situation of the second trimester Mead Drama class. Saving the class from total insanity were head director Brian Hess and for the first time ever, student director Dan Godsey. Having two plays go on at the same time was not the easiest thing to have on just one stage. Rivalry soon began, then the idiotic jokes, and finally the two best productions which were presented on March second and third, and on March ninth and tenth. 'lJanuary Thaw takes place in an old Connecticut house. All Herbert and Marge Gage iDoug Lundstrom and Lesley Crandelll wanted was to get the children Sarah, Paula, and Barbara iConnie Crismore, Monica Weinhandl, and Kay Kerseyl out of New York and into the country. All Barbara wanted was to marry George Justed lMike Houckl. But, problems soon arose when Jonathon and Mathilda Rockwood CRobert Stretch and Leslie Hughesl came back to claim their house after a six year vacation. Soon son Matt Rockwood's iTroy Neighbors? reputation as a girl Chaser set the household in atizzy while Uncle Walter ltlay Keiserl, Frieda the maid iNancy MacDonaldl, Lawyer Loomis CGreg Kingl, and Sheriff Carson iLee Sanford? got into the act to solve this romantic bungle. The back row standers are: Leslie Hughes, Lesley Crandell, Jay Keiser, Dan Godsey, Nancy MacDonald, Otto Hess and Troy Neighbors. 156 Top: Nlelodramatically Leslie Crandell narrates to Doug Lundstrom, HThe Greatest Story Ever Told. Above: Leslie Hughes states to Robert Stretch, tlThis is neither the time nor the place. t'Headin' for the Hills is a down-to-earth hillbilly play. The story concerns Cornelia Wellington Heister and her sister, Dorthea, tPatty Hodge and Julie Parrl, with their chaperone lVliss Winslow tJulia Van Veenl. They're wealthy orphans whose only living relatives are a hillbilly family who run a general store in Lone lVlule, Tennessee. Their father's will directs that the girls are to spend their summers in Lone lVlule or forfeit their share of the fortune. Cyrus Goolus, their uncle lDean Cameron? is a miser who sees a chance to make himself and his family, Happy Goolus lRobin Randelsl, Skeets iJill Haugenl, Hank iJay Keiserl, and the very dirty Betty Bell CRuth Anne l.aLaCheurl, very rich. In an avalanche of fun and laughter, he shows the girls the worst of hillbilly life. They don't discourage easily, however Cyrus, a widower is also engaged in running from three spinsters: Aunt Sukey iRene Gaertnerl, lVliss Oggie iNancy lVlacDonaldl, and Widow Squiggins CNannette Glenn? who all want him to accompany one of them to a hoedown. Cornelia finds herself the object of adoration of one Slim Hawkenshaw iCraig Grafmillerl. She also begins to realize that perhaps mountaineers are human beings also and her own way of life isn't so superior.
