She rings the bells, punches our card , and reminds our boss. Yes, she gives ballast, dignity and refinement to our school. She is a daily symbol of the virtues Mead High School students aspire to attain. .Ili IKWQ S I I ff' K OFFICERS: D. G0ode11,ArrD1rector, V. Sloskowski, Editorg Mrs. Strangeg F. MEAD MARKET MEAD, WASH, HU 7-6501 District Administration Congratulations to the editor of the Pine Burr for another excellent yearbook. I wish to express my sincere best Wishes to the members of the graduating class of 1963. May you have success and happiness in your future activities. I would like to see many of you enroll at college or secure technical or vocational educ ation . It is imperative in this age of automation that students be prepared in some profession or skilled occupation. The era of common labor is about completed. I hope many of you will remember your years at Mead as happy and useful ones. You had excellent teaching and counseling. Please use this training to become Worth- while citizens of our great country. Qcpmzdt High School Administration Why is Mead Senior High the school that it is? Analyze the question and its answer. It is because the student body wants their school to be a great school. Students are proud of their achievement, their reputation, and their past traditions. Mead Senior High will continue to grow in stature. I am proud to be associated with this student body and to join with it in the work to make this great school even better. ff DON BARLOW P sychology-Sociology GORDON BRUNETTE Geometry -Chemi stry -A1 gebra BEN CARTER English -Physiology-Biology GEORGE CHALICH U. These girls were Marianne Morgen, Cheryl Galbreath, Ann Cunningham, Bev Sicilia and Jerene Hales. Ann Cunningham was elected to represent Mead High Scholl. As our princess Ann is the embodiment of all those qualities that make up a true queen: personality, attractiveness, scholastic achievement, leadership, and citizenship. Because of Ann's vivacity, wit, and charm, Mead was represented by not only a lovely princess, but also by' a girl we will always remember as a queen. mf :S ,. , H? ? ig-L .sgiw , v If safsva. Why don't we play tennis ? I H1 Wugh' ' Darrel Leyde Memorial DARREL LEYDE AWARD Presented to Bruce Harmon By Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Leyde Given by M Club and Pep Club. DARREL LEYDE AWARD Presented to Gary Smith By Mr. Meyers and Mrs. Leyde Given by Kiwanis We are all just moments in time. However, Darrel Leyde will forever penetrate the halls of Mead. His laughter, easy smile, and sauntering gait will forever resound through the building, although Darrel himself is gone. In our memory of Darrel Leyde - a boy who was given life, struggled to keep it, but tragically succumbed to fate. Although Darrel lived a terribly short life, he proved to us, the students of Mead, that it is not the length of time one lives his life, but the manner in which he lives it. For Darrel truly did get a maximum mileage out of everyday of his life. He gave his life to Mead, but we could only give him our friendship and admiration -- a small return for such a fine person. Hawthorne Road 'Phone HUdson 7-8508 Spokane, Washington As st nt Pastor: PGSTOI' Rev Robert A. Gray, B.D. Rev. A. Vincent Carr DD Wednesday - January 23 , 1963 ' Mead High School Edition Dedicated to the students of Mead High School and especially to DARREL LEYDE's teammates on the basketball squad. HNow we see through a glass darkly.U So wrote the great Apostle of the first Christian century. This means that even 20-20 vision is still very limited vision. Last Friday evening during the Mead--Deer Park High School basketball game at Deer Park, everyone could see the ten players on the floor, the two referees, the cheer leaders, the two squads and their coaches on their respective benches, and the shouting crowd of rooters cheering their teams to victory! But hardly anyone was aware of the Unseen but very real Presence standing nearby in the Wdim unknown keeping watch over His own.H The Great Coach of the Game of Life was watching very closely last Friday evening. More c ncerned about-therBigiGame'6f Life than the brief Wscrimmageu at hand, this short inning of time within Eternity's endless span, the Great Coach of the Ages followed with special interest every move of His invaluable players. For each had within him the priceless Spark of Eternity! Especially was the Unseen Coach interested that evening in one fine athlete, the team's floor leader, who had literally Nplayed his heart outa for the team and was now tiring rapidly. While most of the crowd cheered the boy's fine nscrimmagen action on the floor, the Great Coach was viewing the eternal dimensions of the athlete's soul: love of God and parents, loyalty, dedication, singleness of purpose, faith. He was now ready to share in Lifels Big Game--to join the mighty Ucloud of'witnessesH who cheer to victory the unending generations. So, the Great Coach of the Ages Wcalledn the valiant but weary athlete to the eternal sidelines, placed His arms around the youth's shoulders and said: nYou've played a great game, son. You deserve to rest now.n We could not see all this, and more, last Friday evening! we still can'tl Because Unow we see through a glass darklyn--but someday 225 eyes, too, will be fully opened. Then we shall see the Great Coach face to face--and wonder why we Wonderedi. -- A. Vincent Carr 'fseavms COMMUNITY AND COLLEGE . . .' DARREL WILLARD LEXDE, 18 year old Mead High School senior, who passed away sud- denly while playing basketball at Deer Park last Friday, had won the respect and admiration of hundreds of'his fellow students as well as the undivided loyal- ty of his teammates who looked to him as their Wfloor leader.N No tragedy in the writerfs remembrance has so shocked the entire school and church conmunity as the sudden death of this devoted athlete. Scores of parents and teenagers tele- phoned Mrs. Carr and me at our home to express their concern and sympathy for the bereaved family, our very dear next door neighbors. MEMORIAL ssnvrcrs were held at iaoo p.m. Wednesday, in the Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home, with Dr. A. Vincent Carr officiating. to stand in-the halls throughout the en- tire service. The Home's public address system made the services audible to all, however. Interment was at Mt. Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs, Arthur O. Leyde, their two sons, Vernon andRon'a'ld', and their daugh ter, Colleen, have asked that I express their heartfelt appreciation to all the Mead High School students, the faculty, and the administration, for their un- limited cooperation and encouragement, to the Board of Deacons and he members of the Whitworth Community Church for their prayers and their many expressions of Christian affection: the preparation of hot meals for the family and many other helpful acts during these trying days, and to all the kind folk of our community for their visits, food, flowers, and prayers. Mr. Thomas Tavener, Minister of'Music at the Whitworth Co munity Presbyterian Church, beautifully sang-twoihymnslof com fort and assurance: WBe Still My Souln and nRock of Ages.n Five of Darrel's fellow teammates, and one very close friend, served as pall- bearers. There were also twenty-one honorary pallbearers, inclu 'ng' vet Shadle Park High School students, and thirty additional members of the Letter- men's Club who participated as a group. All Wednesday afternoon classes were dis- missed and approximately 300 Mead students registered for special transportation to attend the services. More than 600 people taxed the funeral home's facilities. Both Chapels were crowded to capacity and chairs were placed in every other available room. Many had The parents of Darrel Leyde expressed it this way: NThe burden of this bereavement would have been unbearable were it not for the prayers, encouragement, and help of such wonderful friends.' Because of the spontaneous show of affection on the part of Darrel's many school friends, your editor thought it fitting to make this week's 'Chimes' a WMead High School Edition,W dedicated to the students offMead High School, and es- pecially to Darrel Leyde's teammates on the basketball squad. Ch25 additional copies of this week's 'Chimes' were delivered to Mead High School, in care of Mr. Hobart Jenkins, principal., 'I' 1 n l . . 5 - f- 1-. wr- V.A.-.- Elf V ws.. f Rf 's'-c:ffA.ff -A V- .
