l ROBERT GEORGE ROBERT WOODWARD Mac-Hi,s head football coach, Robert George, was fullback under these same colors Crimson and Black during the years of his high school education. He coaches the Pioneer squad from the players' point of view, because he knows what it means to be on the team fighting for the Alma Mater. This season, his second at Mac-Hi, Mr. George, through understanding and thorough knowledge of techniques. coached an undersized team clear to the Oregon State Semi- Finals. He proved he could instill the fighting heart in each member of the squad, that refused to be downed even when the odds were sorely against them. A great deal of the success of this year's team is due to Assistant Coach Bob Wood- ward. Working with the line was his speciality. He did a splendid job in developing a stout forward wall to enable the backs to ramble to the touchdowns. G Z! ' S zz The Mac-Hi Pioneers enjoyed one of the most successful grid seasons in the history of the school as they advanced to the State Semi-Finals. The Pioneers. being picked to top the Blue Mountain Conference before the season started, got off to a rather slow start in edging the Hermiston Bulldogs, 25 to 12. The boys improved with each following week, defeating Clarkston, 13 to 7, Hood River, 28 to 13: The Dalles, 26 to O, and appeared at their peak when they won the tradi- tional game the Wa-Hi Blue Devils, 20 to 16. Mac-Hi received its first and only regular season defeat at the hands of an inspired LaGrande team, 12 to 0. Sweeping over Burns. 53 to 0, and Baker. 19 to 0, the team went into the Pendleton game with the hopes of concluding the season with one last win. Mac-Hi defeated Pendleton in the Armistice Day clash, and thanks to a Baker victory over the over-confident LaGrande Tigers, the Pioneers found themselves Blue Mountain Champs. Vale, undefeated up to that time, deserved an opportunity to top the Pioneers, and settle the District l Championship. ln Vale, Mac-Hi found the best coached team of the year. After a poor first half, Mac-Hi came back strong to edge the Vikings, 18 to 13. and advance to the State Quarter Finals. Dallas, a team with an outstanding season behind them, journeyed to the Mac-Hi Gridiron for the Quarter Final Match. Mac-Hi had very little trouble with the Dragons and defeated them 33 to 12. A long trip to Marshfield proved too much for the team and they went down to a strong Marshfield team, 19 to 0, in the Semi-Finals.
