Under the direc¬ tion of Mr. Don Ryan and Mr. Montgomery, McTigue began its first year in this program and offered courses in film-making, ceramics, typing, gymnastics, dancing, sewing, art, cake decorating, and karrate to name a few. All who participated in the program would agree that it was fun as well as educational. 14 15 ' ’ K tt‘ Uiw I T7„ mmm t rKtt. 5W BRU 5 H 1 NC m .““k STMT RIOTING 4 OWJSIE ' wokjettw ‘ MUM bii pkti « USl W f ri it STM? 7 v Aui L j ' J£r jBL ,pli tirfWk is ; 5 rx - « _ r Sff 16 An auctioneer, “Quacky the Clown,” a cosmotologist, a computer programmer, a company vice-president, and some 200 other guest speakers and panels visited McTigue during each of the career weeks to talk with students. In addition, students took over 210 field trips during the fall and spring programs and were exposed to some 100 movies, 60 filmstrips, and 4,500 phamphlets. Numerous parents and other members of the Toledo business community participated in the career program in hopes that students could gain a better insight into the world of work that they will soon enter. 17 While learning to utilize their artistic talents, the Art students were busy again this year creating clay figures, papier mache heads for career week, and flowers and paintings to decorate the halls, offices and the lobby for special occasions. The eighth grade Art students made a beautiful display of paper mache animals that were shown in the library in March. 18 The English classes this year have been busy writing plays, acting them out, writing ballads and various kinds of poetry as well as reading books and making reports. Try your hand at spelling sometime — it’s not always easy, but teachers find ways to make spelling enjoyable and educational. 19 Should we pull out of Vietnam? Should we invite the Red Chinese ping-pong team to the United States? What can be done now to end pollution? These and other timely topics were discussed by students in their social studies classes as they used newspapers, political cartoons, movies, and books to learn about this country and the world. 20 In the three year mathematics program, a student can progress from addition, subtraction, and fractions through geome¬ try in the eighth grade, while learning both the “new math” and the “old.” The mathematics program strives to teach the fundamentals problem solving and logical thinking and their application to the problems that one faces in everyday life. i 21 I Learning to cook and to sew are only a part of the Home Economics program. In addition, girls brought their younger brothers and sisters or neighbors to school to practice child care techniques and discussed family problems and manners while learning to crochet and knit. They also learned how to set up a family budget as well as to arrange flowers, make sugar Easter eggs, and create many meals for their families and friends. 22 ‘ The MeTigue Music Department offers classes in an assortment of music areas including band, orchestra, general music, glee clubs, choir, and small ensembles. Some of these groups entertained students, parents, and faculty at the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies, the Spring musical, the potluck dinner. Several groups entered the Solo and Ensemble Contests and received honors for their performance. Games, gymnastics, and outdoor sports are a part of the physical education program which teaches the student reaction as well as physical fitness. 23 ii While learning how to use hand tools and work together in groups, the boys studied the construction of small engines by taking them apart and assembling them. Plastics, the construction of a cross-section of a house and basic drafting are also offered. 24 The eighth graders all had trimesters of Typing, Spanish, and French. They learned phrases and sang songs while learning the history and cultural aspects of each language. Typing taught them the keyboard and how to type personal letters and reports. 25 The trimester science program offers students a great variety of study — living things, biology, earth science, space science, and related science. After taking general science in the sixth grade, students spend one trimester in each of these independent, yet interrelated, science areas during their seventh and eighth grade years. 26 27 inf FOOT BALL TEAM: ROW 1: Coach Petrosini, Bob Sickelbaugh, Art Kieffer, Jim McCarty, Rick Roth, Chris Barber, Alan Danner, Jeff Billig, Tony Ramon, Bill McMullen, Mike Sawyers, Coach Levison.
