Hockey In the seven seasons that McQuaid has fielded a hockey team, a winning tradition has evolved. This is part of what makes McQuaid stand out — refusing to be anything but the best. This year’s squad experienced a few difficulties in the beginning; a slow start was responsible for our losing the first two games and only tying the third. But after that, with a little patience, and some modifica- tions of our game plans by Coach Wojtowicz, the icers went on to a 10-5-1 record. We weren't always the winner, but we had some great games, just the same. One of the highlights of the season was the big 4-3 win over Mendon, and the two hotly contested losses to Sutherland (6-5, 1-0) were evidence of our tremendous fan support. Characterized by their devastating checks and lightning-fast skating, the team gave its fans the excite- ment they came to see. There weren't really any individual stars; the whole team contributed: players like “Bullhead,” stifling the opposing offense; “Eagle-eye Post,” leaving the goalies bewildered with lethal shots; Rick, keeping the opposi- tion honest, “Rocket Reg,” a perpetual threat in the offense; “Snipe,” battling his way down the ice; Rowan, distributing body checks left and right; “Smiley,” leaving the fans amazed at his fearless tactics; “Wally,” turning in one stellar performance after another; “Burrhead” always showing us how; and “Grump,” thwarting shot after shot. We who are leaving wish the coach and the return- ing team the best-the winning trend will continue, keeping McQuaid the unique insitution that it is. e
