Holmes — In these times when educational ideas and practices come into question along with every other aspect of life, a person like Mr. Paul Sadler possesses a very vital talent; adaptability. His knowledge of education as well as his keen understanding of students and their limitations has enabled him to excel in teaching. Like all great teachers he is truly a great man. His methods of teaching will go unequalled and will meet the praise of McQuaid students for many years to come. In appreciation for his efforts and in admiration of his ac- complishments, we the class of 1976 dedicate this yearbook to you Paul. May God help you provide others with what you have given us. Every man is more than just himself; he also represents the unique, the very special and always significant and remark- able point at which the world’s phenomena intersects only once in this way and never again. — Hermann Hesse — eset, e ay, or NL SY I think that if we are going to reform the world, and make it a better place to live in, the way to do it is not with talk about relationships of a political nature, which are inevitably dualistic, full of subj- ects and objects and their relationship to one another, or with programs full of things for other people to do. I think that kind of approach starts it at the end and presumes the end is the begin- ning. Programs of a political nature are impor- tant end products of social quality that can be effective only if the underlying structure of social values is right. The social values are right only if the individual values are right. The place to im- prove the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there. — Robert M. In four years, many of us have learned a lot from knowing you. We thank you, Mr. Julius, for showing us how to best live our lives. Whether it has been teaching us Dostoevsky, Melville, or Flan O’Brien, or showing us how to sharpen our darkroom skills, your genuine concern has always been obvious. Thank you, Doctor, for “giving a damn.” As land is improved by sowing it with various seeds so is the mind by exercising it with different studies. — Pliny 28 Kings are happy in many things, but mainly in this: that they can do and say whatever they please. — Sophocles 29 fy i | ff hi ' mi il! ff iH | li ae Pal ml NNN ANY a If we could but read it, every human being carries his life in his face, and is good-looking, or the reverse, as that life has been good or evil. Now, two years later, he is departing, but he will long be remembered by those who he has touched. In his short stay with us, he taught much more than academics, and reached many more people than his classes could ever contain. We pay this small tribute to Mr. Ian McEuen Robertson. He gave us so much more. “I am a man, and whatever concerns humanity is of interest to me.” — Terence 33 i] oO I cannot keep track of all the vagaries of fashion, Everyday, so it seems, brings in a different style. — OVID 39 It was a heavily publicized game with A.Q. coming in to save their pride. CAMERA C SPORTS | q ¢ “i ra ha ae ae payee fF . ree Ve eed Aloe _ Football For the 15th year, the master strategist, Coach Seymour, took the seniors aside — out of the sweltering August heat and with a short and simple Lombardi-like speech he told us: “The success of a team depends on its leaders — its seniors. It’s up to you to work with the underclassmen and build their spirit. Although they may be instrumental in victory, it is you, the graduating class that will always remember this as YOUR year.” We accepted the challenge knowing it would be difficult. We wanted to build their spirit and create a memorable year by winning, but even we had our doubts. After all, we were winless as freshman and so-so J.V.’s. We no longer had the class of ’75 to fall back on. As juniors we helped them to go 8-1 but that was their team, not ours. We still had to prove it by ourselves and more importantly to ourselves. To people not on the team, our season seemed doomed from the outset. Perhaps before the first day. Bobo’s hernia, the Mermaid’s broken arm, and the one good shoulder between Craig and Merle struck at their faith, but luckily not ours. The opening game raised even more doubts. Could Willy Ams and Clem effectively take the posi- tions of Matt and José who were the first and only lost for the season with broken bones. The doubts were soon put to rest, and the questions, answered. As the game ended, we knew we were good. So heads wouldn't swell we were constantly reminded that “we had to get better every day.” As freshman we learned to lose, as seniors we knew we didn’t like it and wouldn't accept it. Nothing, not a hernia, nor broken bones, nor hail could stop us. And nothing did— not even A.Q. We will be remembered as the only McQuaid team to go undefeated beating all 3 Catholic rivals, and the only team to win 2 successive T-U polls. Though true, those facts over- simplify the spirit and individuals that made the team. This was the year Mr. Noce said he was going to change his image? This was the year of Bobo’s Boys and of Grumps who thought centering was j ust-a-snap. Pete Stone com- pleted more passes to the brothers Tex and Demmerle than to his harem — a miracle! Mac and Eskimo fought both ways in the pits while the unsung Achille flawlessly held those crucial extra points. Who will forget J.C. Super? star and Merle who rumbled over everyone (except the Bear of course!). Tony Quercia, the cocky one, did more than he was asked, while Aha, Francesco and Gisel showed their specialty on the suicide squads. The cast of senior char- acters is completed with Matt and José who displayed patriotism the ’76 style. But we must thank the coaches, underclassmen, and fans, who helped make it memorable. 139 Varsity oa ee Ps . Question marks always seem to crop up at the beginning of soccer seasons. We all knew, as the coach had told us, that we had a young inexperienced team. But the coach told us that we could overcome that obstacle by pulling together. We had our doubts. Skull, Reggie, Mark, Georges, and Charlie formed a core, but where was the rest of the apple? Gradually, we put things together. Lanks just scooped up those balls in front of the goal and Phil was always there. Dan, Chump, Steve, Bill, and the two Lips helped Skull build a de- fensive wall. Foyboy, J.L., and Eddie helped Rocket and Mark man the midfield, and Dough, Little Chump, Bullhead, J.T., and “Mar-tin” provided the attack force to assist Charlie and Georges. We were finally starting to look like a team. Our first four games told us our early work had paid off: 5-2, 5-3, 4-2, and 2-1. Four wins in a row; we thought we were in heaven. But injuries also took their toll: Skull, Reggie and Smut were all hampered by them. The next games were vital, but with Skull and Smut out, Mooney dealt us a heavy blow; Edison East, and H-A-C were no better. At 4-4, we were all healthy again, but the timing just wasn’t there. Coach Armstrong sat us down and told us what we had to do. We worked, won and scrapped our way into the section- als. On that cold night, in Marion, under the lights, we played what was probably the best soccer of the season. At the end, the score read Spencerport 2 McQuaid 0, but we were still proud; we had played our game to its fullest extent. We will never forget this season, for our team was genuinely a unified machine. We who are leaving wish the best to the coach and the rest of the team next year. Thanks for a truly memorable season. Although it was rather inconsistent with pre- vious seasons, in the real sense of the word, we were a winning team. 1975 was a year of rebuilding... We had lost the seven Varsity Sectional champs; we were left with a core of four seniors (which dwindled to three as injury took its toll). We were probably the most “longterm” goal oriented team in the history of McQuaid; first the City- Catholic championship; then the Eisenhower Veteran’s Day Meet; finally, the Jesuit championship in New York. Many Friday afternoons before the Saturday invitationals, we would venture out and run eight hard miles in preparation for the dual meets against Aquinas. Although they had con- sistently beaten us in invitational competition, we rose to the occasion on October 23. Despite being a young, inexperienced team, we captured the City-Catholic title by two points. Indeed, an afternoon to remember. There were no sensational individual stars — just a solid core of determined men. We didn’t plan to go 12-0, or to seize the Sectional title. Facing these facts at the start of the season, we set reasonable goals we knew we could obtain through deter- mination and hard work. The team of 1975 was young, but enthusiastic. We were pleased with our humble beginnings; for within them lay great potential. As for Peter, Andy, and the two Toms, we can only give our heartfelt thanks. Seniors will leave each year, and their records and victories will be forgotten, but the team spirit will continue to grow. No matter whether we remember the season records; we will remember our team experience: “Our lives are fuller because of this competition, and our memories will be far richer.” Left to Right: Tom Horton, Jerry Hurley, Mark Farrel, Tom Lott. We knew we wouldn’t be as devastating as the previous team. How- ever, our weight classes were filled with some fantastic matmen as we entered our first match. Some of our men had all the muscle, some had all the brains, and some had a little of each. No one really knew what to expect going into Roth. That slim victory set us straight. We knew what had to be done .. . “O.K. sit out! Turn in! Stand up!” ... Twelve minute matches. Extra sprints. More stairs . . . We tried our best against Warsaw and E.R., and maybe “we shoulda won.” But we won the big ones. We rolled over Madison and East with more ease than expected; and when the biggest match came, so did McQuaid. The super fan support helped us dominate the baby blue of Bishop Kearney. That victory was ever so sweet. It was a season which saw two McQuaid grapplers, Rich Salamone and John Smallridge, become Section 5 cham- pions. They furthered the McQuaid name in the state championships, with John placing fourth while Rich be- came the first McQuaid athlete to win a New York State championship. Pete “the bear’ Springer, Jeff O’Hara, and an old football veteran, Craig Kennedy, also turned in some quality performances. We will miss the wrestling class of ’76 but wrestlers will move up the ranks to re- place them. Oh yeah, McQuaid was again the City-Catholic Cham- pion for the ’75-’76 season. With the annual dedication of such an outstanding coach, the hard work of the wres- tlers, and the terrific fan support McQuaid has possesed in recent years, this distinguished honor has almost be- come routine. = 150 V ar Si Back row: Coach Roselli, Peter Springer, John Comerford, Kevin Bader, Dennis Adsit, Jeff O'Hara, Craig Kennedy, Mr. Jones. Graduation had robbed us of many keys to past titles. Was a sixth City- Catholic title too much to ask for? This was our question at the outset of the season. Mr. Tobin had told us that if we were going to pull it off, it would have to be a team effort. The task at hand; to utilize everyone to their fullest potential. Tobin’s method was working again: suddenly, everyone was_ performing. Libutti just kept on breaking records all the way to a sectional championship. Holly outdistanced his opposition throughout the whole season. Bill’s dives were near perfection, and O'Hara, Lauth, and Schifino just kept on getting better. Even Brophy and Mahoney stepped into the spotlight. We were all contributing to the legend: McQuaid’s sixth straight City-Catholic champion- ship (and 52 straight victories as a bonus). The legend was made up of agony, victory, fun anda whole education in itself. We are proud, and especially proud of the man with the funny hat. Six titles, 52 straight victories — what more could you ask for? Thank you for leading us, Mr. Tobin; thank you for showing us what it is to be the best. Terry, Eddie, and all the rest of the seniors leave you with our sincere appreciation: “What has been instilled, will never be forgotten.” Varsi Back row: Jerry Schneider, Bill Skuse, Marty Mahoney, Ned Nicosia, Jeff LiButti, Tim Holly, Dave Allen, Neal Brophy, Dan Keenan, Jerry Lauth, Tom Stone. This is part of what makes McQuaid stand out — refusing to be anything but the best. This year’s squad experienced a few difficulties in the beginning; a slow start was responsible for our losing the first two games and only tying the third. But after that, with a little patience, and some modifica- tions of our game plans by Coach Wojtowicz, the icers went on to a 10-5-1 record. We weren't always the winner, but we had some great games, just the same. One of the highlights of the season was the big 4-3 win over Mendon, and the two hotly contested losses to Sutherland (6-5, 1-0) were evidence of our tremendous fan support. Characterized by their devastating checks and lightning-fast skating, the team gave its fans the excite- ment they came to see. There weren't really any individual stars; the whole team contributed: players like “Bullhead,” stifling the opposing offense; “Eagle-eye Post,” leaving the goalies bewildered with lethal shots; Rick, keeping the opposi- tion honest, “Rocket Reg,” a perpetual threat in the offense; “Snipe,” battling his way down the ice; Rowan, distributing body checks left and_ right; “Smiley,” leaving the fans amazed at his fearless tactics; “Wally,” turning in one stellar performance after another; “Burrhead” always showing us how; and “Grump,” thwarting shot after shot. We who are leaving wish the coach and the return- ing team the best-the winning trend will continue, keeping McQuaid the unique insitution that it is. e Wage {s be] cua RY awayy | 4 4 Back row: Alan Schusler (manager), C.J.
