Basketball Friday night at McQuaid about eight-thirty. The two teams have warmed up and are at their respec- tive benches. The voice begins, ‘‘“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to McQuaid, home of the Knights.” The fans roar. The gym fills with emotion. The voice announces the visiting team’s starters, then the Knights. Standing ovation. “Starting at forward 44, Jim Combs.” Slinky jogs out on the court. Leading scorer and pure shooter. “At the other forward 40, Brian Hart.” New talent, the Skate played J.V. sophomore year “and didn’t start, until this year. ‘‘At the center for the Knights, 52, Chuck Schott.” Chuckles, the football player. The rebounder. The big man. “In the guard posi- tion, 14, Cliff Florence.” The Cool One saunters out, cool-like. “And at guard... . ” Kevin Ryan. Joe Mesko. Pete Stone. Take your pick. Kevin started out playing great, but he broke his hand and missed all but the last game or two. Stones came in for him, but he too was hurt and missed several important games. Joe always filled in admirably for Pete. We look for strength in Stones, Thomas Huber, Ciaccio, Zelmo, Thaney, and the rest. We thank Skate, Slinky, Chuckles, Cliff, Joe, and Bomber for what they gave. They weren’t the best, they weren’t the worst, but they were ours.
