He is still all that. That’s what he does, but he’s so much more... Pablo Casals once said: “I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance.”” Because he is a teacher who cares and cares passionately, because he truly shares of himself as a person, we the class of 1975, with affection and joy, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. John Roselli. GOOD MEMORIES Smile on your Get not your friends by bare compliments, but by giving them sensible tokens of your love. It is well worth while to learn how to win the heart of a man the right way. Force is of no use to make or preserve a friend, who is an animal that is never caught or tamed but by kindness and pleasure. Excite them by your civilities, and show them your desire nothing more than their satisfaction; oblige with all your soul that friend who has made you a present of his own. —Socrates— 11 | have more memories than if | were a thousand years old. That sums up McQuaid’s Student Government this year. Take the President (please), Mike Seifert, ‘the Doc” as he’s fondly known. He would acknowledge the nickname because of his incisive mind and competency for diagnostic analysis. Others would suggest less flattering reasons. However, it is a fact he owns and operates a quiet disposition, graced by a slow and deep pitched voice. Now, the Vice-President, Mark Borkowski, is, well, he’s different! He has been accused of being Mike’s son. He’s small and sports not a quiet, but an unquiet disposition with a rapid and high pitched voice. Temperamentally, even politically, they stand poles apart (no pun intended). Yet they harmonized well and Mc- Quaid benefited. They had different approach- es to Student Government, perhaps best de- scribed as informal and formal, but somehow it worked. All the disparate groups in the school had something to identify with in some facet of the two “fearless leaders”. Our financial wizard, Larry Searles, with deadly calculator and ledger kept the books balanced and proved invaluable by taking the V.P. to the Ontario Free Clinic once a month for his hormone injection. Then there was secretary Ron Rosati, who never removed his funny-looking hat, but al- ways provided manageable and “natural’’ ad- vice. McQuaid’s Student Government was a mot- ley group, but they worked well together. Dif- ferent? Indeed, still, it was a very good year for McQuaid. T.G. for our S.G. I'll be happy if we win more than half our games.” . Admittedly, everyone had their doubts — doubts as to whether or not the season of the year before could possibly be recreated. But, even if the fans had their doubts at the outset of it all, the football team never did. They were out to prove something — that they were as good as anyone around. It was the year of Ron, doing his “Jim Brown” imitation; Stone . . . throwing; George, smackin’ crackin’; Ralphe Bunce, ‘‘snappin’ ” it; Suzie, going, “Let’s win this one for Laurie”; Chuckles, bootin’ em — one for a record; Frank, shuffling grabbing; The Cush, scoopin’ in those clutch bombs; Vinnie — the surprise; Big Mac, dishin’ out punishment; Broomfield, coming up big from behind; Max, keep- ing an eye on things; Kennedy, freakin’ out; Kevin, of the Birdcage helmet; Peter, rockin’ the opposi- tion; Big Boy Merl, promising a future; and of course, those unforgettable Hamburgs, carrying on in the true tradition of ground round; — and let’s not forget the opposition, without whom we couldn’t have beaten anyone. Now we realize that old Coach Seymour was fool- ing us before; that he knew better than anyone the things his machine could do. And that’s exactly what it was — a machine. There were no real superstars — everyone pulled together. They set out to prove that they weren’t going to live on past glory. They proved it, and in every measure. Indeed, this year we were NUMBER ONE. Coach Armstrong went to work as did the players. Work. Practice. Organizing. Sweat- ing. And fun. Things came together as we sweated and groaned. September came, the season. What it brought, however, was not what we expected, what we prepared for. Some players were racked by injury, and it hurt. Billy was knocked out early in the sea- son. Reggie was injured toward the end. Bosy was in that car accident, and Ad was off and on with knee trouble. Bomber, one of the best goal tenders, was out for a few. What was going on? Well, the team was going to play, one way or the other. It happened that we played our best games against the best. But our worst against the worst. We lost five games by one goal. The goal was to play soccer and we did. Rec- ord aside, we played well. What fun is it? Why all that hard, exhausting work? Where does it get you? Where's the good of it? It is one of the strange ironies of this strange life that those who work the hardest, who subject themselves to the strictest discipline, who give up certain pleasur- able things in order to achieve a goal, are the happiest men. When you see 20 or 30 men line up for a distance race in some meet, don’t pity them, don’t feel sorry for them. Better envy them instead. You are probably looking at the 20 or 30 best “bon vivants” in the world. They are completely and joyously happy in their simple tastes, their strong and well-conditioned bodies, and with the thrill of wholesome com- petition before them. These are the days of their youth, when they can run without weari- ness; these are their buoyant, golden days, and they are running because they love it. Their lives are fuller because of this competi- tion and their memories will be far richer. That’s why men love to run. That’s why men do run. There is something clean and noble about It. The 1974 McQuaid Cross-Country team became the finest team in school history. Despite losing the sec- tional crown, we finished the season ranked ninth in the state, while our 133-1 mark midway through the season was good enough for a number two ranking in the state. Our harriers romped to their third con- secutive City-Catholic League title and extended their dual meet win skein to 29. They won five major invita- tional titles, including their second straight Jesuit Championship. However, painful defeat supplemented our diet of victories, as the Knights lost to Greece Ar- cadia, the team that later won the State Championships. The high point of the season was the hurling of ven- erable mentor, Mr. Bradley, into Red Creek following the big McQuaid Invitational win. There was something clean and noble about this team. Wrestling It was the ‘‘next year” everyone talked of, wait- ed for, anticipated. We didn’t let them down! The toughest matches came early, Attica and East Rochester. Both seemed surprisingly easy. They nourished our confidence, maybe to a point of overconfidence. Then Eastridge set us straight. Mistakes were many and we almost blew it, but pride pulled us through 22-18. We knew we had it! We rolled over East and Madison, then the ultimate; revenge against Kearney was ever so sweet. It was a close-knit team on all levels; Varsity, J.V., and Frosh. Each man pulled his own weight while pushing constantly for each other. Yet, most important in our success were the contri- butions of Coach Roselli. His enthusiasm and faith in us kept the team one, hungry and eager. For all he did, we gave him the season, a pittance in a debt we could never repay. Many may won- der, but we know what it means to be the best, undefeated, 15 and 0, NUMBER ONE. The voice begins, ‘‘“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to McQuaid, home of the Knights.” The fans roar. The gym fills with emotion. The voice announces the visiting team’s starters, then the Knights. Standing ovation. “Starting at forward 44, Jim Combs.” Slinky jogs out on the court. Leading scorer and pure shooter. “At the other forward 40, Brian Hart.” New talent, the Skate played J.V. sophomore year “and didn’t start, until this year. ‘‘At the center for the Knights, 52, Chuck Schott.” Chuckles, the football player. The rebounder. The big man. “In the guard posi- tion, 14, Cliff Florence.” The Cool One saunters out, cool-like. “And at guard... . ” Kevin Ryan. Joe Mesko. Pete Stone. Take your pick. Kevin started out playing great, but he broke his hand and missed all but the last game or two. Stones came in for him, but he too was hurt and missed several important games. Joe always filled in admirably for Pete. We look for strength in Stones, Thomas Huber, Ciaccio, Zelmo, Thaney, and the rest. We thank Skate, Slinky, Chuckles, Cliff, Joe, and Bomber for what they gave. They weren’t the best, they weren’t the worst, but they were ours. The good and bad go hand in hand. However, there was no bad. It was win- ning, an undefeated year. Again. All the anx- ious, breath-holding seconds, the cramps, the screaming muscles, the bleary -chlorined eyes danced with joy when the clash with Marshall ended and we realized we were No. 1. Everything seemed worth it: all the hours on hours pushing and lapping through the pools, all the long bus and car rides to the meets with time to nag us with questions of doubt, with time to wonder and worry. We knew we were good; that Mr. Tobin had honed us in his tac- tical fashion to be a team. We were a dynasty; we were the Green Bay Packers, the old New York Yankees of City Catholic Swimming. Could we do it again? Would not having our own pool, the ‘better times’’ posted by others catch up with us and serve to lift the crown from our head? Well, it never happened. We sprinted, sput- tered, and splashed to victory after victory. It was exciting, exhilarating. It was a year filled with joy and memories. It was a year that cli- maxed with the squeaking but so satisfying win over undefeated Marshall. Memories? What a silly question. te 24 wd Kevin Cronin, Jeff LiButti, Dave Root, Capt. Lithe acrobats who whirl in dervish circles and race with long smooth strides. Battle scarred soldiers who withstand the onslaught of blades and clubs with practised disdain. Hockey players are many things and the McQuaid 1974-75 Hockey Team fused the diverse facets of a group of skillful young men into the core of a winning team. The McQuaid icers shot up and shatter- ed opposing goalies with glee. ‘Beef’, bulling his way to a hat trick; McTigue, exciting teammate and fan alike with his lightning speed; ‘Peanut’, checking and hitting with abandon; “Bean”, rifling shots against terrified goalies; ‘Burns’, passing and skating with the acumen borne of experience; ‘Bo Wievel”, blast- ing opponents into the boards; ‘Le Tois”, racing to swipe the puck; “Mildew”, hus- tling always; and of course, ““Knauber”, tossing away shots with casual defiance. The team steamrolled its way to victory after victory and anyone who saw the team work over the opposition could only say, ‘‘How can next year’s team compare with this one.’” These people underesti- mate the talent of the underclassmen on the team. The work of Coach Wojtowicz and Mr. Forget will propel them to the level attained by the 74-75 team. But any future efforts will never diminish the success of this year’s team — a rugged bunch of guys who simply refused to be anything but the finest.
