THATS WHY WE Dry €r HoAE Amo WAEN WERKE COVE Fran, BEAG OUR FRIENDS Wie BE PKIs OORNBEE The Eagle soars in the summit of Heaven The Hunter with his dogs pursues his circuit. O perpetual revolution of configured stars, O perpetual recurrence of determined seasons, O world of spring and autumn, birth and dying! The endless cycle of ideas and action, Endless invention, endless experiment, Brings Knowledge of motion, but not of stillness; Knowledge of speech, but not of silence; Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the Word. All our Knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance, All our ignorance brings us to death, But nearness to death no nearer to God. Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the Knowledge we have lost in information? The cycles of Heaven in twenty centuries Brings us farther from God and nearer to the Dust. T. S. Eliot “With all beings and all things we shall be as relatives.”’ Sioux Indians 21 22 If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by the knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except Will which says to them: “Hold On!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men can count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And — which is more — you'll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling “A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.” Carl Sandburg 23 | do not know what | may appear to the world; but to myself | seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore and divert- ing myself in now and then finding a smooth- er pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undis- covered before me. Isaac Newton “ ... The wise man looks into space, and does not regard the small as too little, nor the great as too big: for he knows that there is no limit to dimension.” The world is round, and the place which may seem like the end, may also be only the beginning. nee ewe ae SIR a ge s ’ : iis eh Y gi} bikes a | E Se rh elihore’s Z bib sy = gan. These men generated a season of ecstatic triumph and haunting humiliation. But through dedication and ability unable to be for- gotten, we eventually drowned this humiliation. How often does it happen that so many out- standing individuals can blend their personalities and talents for the good of one team? This year was Roger, dancin’ and prancin’; Matt, destroying; Mike, picking and plowing; Date, cutting back and taking off; Zeke, thinking and leading; Quinner, pulling and hitting; Chuck, bootin’ em; George, being mean; Doggie, Blocking in excellent form; Rod, taking charge; Lou, snap- ping and roving; the “D”, playing that tough “D ; Billy, the best in the clutch; Beach, yelling and beating his brains out week after week; Mono and Frank, shuffling; Runce, mangling; Fio, sticking; You know what Ganey, picking ‘em off, while Paul made the big plays.- A season like this arises from many things, but mostly pride. Mooney tasted our pride — both of our players and of the devoted rooters. We had always wondered, and now we know — what it means to be the Best. = a 2a = ; —_ —_—-s ; - . Mr. Marcello got married and couldn't find time for us. Only three starters were returning, along with most of last year’s bench. August 31 rolled around, and our first practice inspired little hope. But our new coach, Mr. Arms trong, kept telling us that we would be okay, and that the sectionals were not out of reach. Bucky, finding this very hard to believe, just kept on working. The first game wasn’t supposed to be much of a test (Mon- roe), but we fell behind early by two goals. Even so, we battled back to win 6-3. Armstrong told us that a mark of a good team was to be able to come from behind and win. Our confidence grew. We finished 10-3, and anxiously awaited the sectionals, being the only Catholic team in the tourney. However the undefeated powerhouse from Penfield pulverized our chances of advancing in the tournament. The defensive corps of Bucky, Squek, Ozzie, and sometimes Seg provided the backbone for this exceptional squad. Tom Hanshaw took care of most of the scoring (league leader), with help from Mack and Ad. There weren't any pre-season raves about the team, either. After all, the starting five was composed of two football players, a jumping bean- stalk, a gray haired forward, and a little guy from E. R. These men and the other players kept quiet, and work- ed. But after the season started, the rest of the league began to watch us with well-earned respect. Kearney discovered first the fireworks that the Knights generated, then it was Marshall. As the season aged, we lost some tight ones, like Mooney and Madi- son, but we matured and won some pressure games, too. Everyone played some, as Joe, Cliff, Kevin, and Mike responded like men in sticky situations. Super-subs Chuckles and Coombies often provided a lacking spark at any time in a game. Ours was a close-knit team. Meanwhile, the Sectionals seemed within reach as Roby paved our road with that high average. Joey was leading the league in assists, while Runc controlled those boards. Napes was hitting that sweet baseline Jumper and Rog was playing that famous ‘“‘D”. Then after 32 minutes of intensity, Coombies 3 point- er ignited a glorious moment. Pandemonium reigned as the scoreboard read McQuaid 63, East 62, The un- defeated Orientals knew then what pride is at Mc- Quaid. Sure, we lost more games, but not many. A berth was secured in the heralded Sectionals. We overcame a strong Brighton squad, only through a superb effort, and continued along our Collision course with East. In aftermath, the year had been fantastically re- warding. Nobody’s ridiculing the Knights now. They don’t dare. Good-bye Roby, Joey, Rog, Runc, and Napes. You made us proud. It seemed that we were lacing up for the finals against Pittsford the week after the opener against Irondequoit. It’s difficult to define greatness in words, but after watching the 73-74 McQuaid hockey team, words just aren’t needed. McCoon, Spark, Crazy, and Knaubber make a good definition. Beef and Smiley, Postie and Dirt— What a Dynamite bunch. What do you say about a team carved out of love, dedication, and even tears? Radar never let us down. Yes, we lost, but we beat ourselves. No- body in the county could skate with us on a good day. Smoothshoes Hustled his way into our hearts while our two magic Mikes (Courneen and McTigue) Kept flying. Spark did the scoring, but this was no one or two man team. Everyone did a job and usually perform- ed well. Little Bongo, Pete (the other Crazy), C. J., Phil, and lan — you men epitomized the word team. If we were lucky, this season would have lasted forever, but Time just “keeps on truckin’ ”. Time will try to make us forget the year you guys gave us, but we won't. You did it all. i? Conant Wrestling Preseason expectations were dim for the ‘“Mustochioed Coach”, for he was without a substantial HWT. or UNL. How- ever, with the ‘Bear Club” and ““Mighty Midgets” behind him, things worked out all right. Formulating the theory of ‘Per- formance, Not Potential’’ one cold Saturday night, they knock- ed off County Champs, East Rochester, as the ‘Master Dealer’’ dealt them Chris Poluikis at 177. They also sliced up the ‘Top Banana” in the City-Catholic League, Madison, with everyone, especially freshman Joe Ross, contributing to the overall team effort. This earned them “a piece of the pie’, as we tied for the League Championship, a remarkable achievement for two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and a freshman.
