First Penlield fell before a 58-point attack led by XValsh's I8 points. On Saturday night it was Nien- t1mp's turn to take the scoring honors with 20 points against Charlotte. But this was the high point before the crash. East Rochester4 no sweat. XVell, practically no sweat. Nlaybe the first five would have to play all but the last four minutes. And then the Knights opened a 13-3 lead in the opening minutes: it looked like an easy win. But East Rochester didn't follow the script and beat McQuaid 52-5l. During the week of .Ianuary 25 the N1cQuaid esuit High basketball team had one of two choices to make. First: it Could fold up and play dead for the rest of the season. Once a team has started to lose, most coaches will tell you that it's pretty hard to break the habit. Second: it could do a complete about-face and play basketball against Brockport. The varsity realized the seriousness of the situation. 'VIcQuaid realized the seriousness all right as it held on for three quarters. Into the fourth quarter they eld. Then with three minutes remaining and Nie- CQuaid out in front 40-33, the Knights exploded be- hind .Iim lNlcCarthy to dig Brockport's grave and bury the pedestal. In those three short minutes Nlae scored nine of the last twelve points. rebounded aggressively. and checked a few Brockport shots on the side. The following Friday Jefferson came out of its an- nual visit a lot better than it thought possible. The Statesmens 64 points and 25 points in the last quarter were new highs scored against McQuaid. McQuaid's probable opponent in the Tournament final started out fast, fronting l l-3 after four minutes of play. The Knights then switched to a zone defense and that was the game. Mt. Carmel scored three more points in the first quarter, six in the second, and seven in the fourth. The third period saw McQuaid come within seven points of perfection. Wlehster and Franklin were next. Vlehster was a highly improved team, or so they said. But Ide and Nientimp with I7 points each proved otherwise. f g V X, 3.2, Tim Scharf and Jim lvfcflarthy converge on the ball, as fearsome Fitz ogles them. McQuaid goes up in arms for the ball against Penfield. In the next outing even bigger things happened. Almost single-handedly Aloe Fustanio beat Franklin. The Franklin team wasn't just an ordinary team: it had won I3 straight. The performance by Aloe wasn't ordinaryl it was a record-breaking one. Skillfully running the hack line against the Quaker zone, Fustanio took and made the layup and the ten- footer. And when he was fouled. he made the free throws too. The letdown after the Franklin game almost heat the Knights on the next outing. But Ide Came through
