If one activity at MeQuaid is to be singled out as most indispensable to faculty-student relations, that activity would have to he the Student Council. Perhaps its most important aim is to promote cooper- ation among all students and to act as a moderator he- tween them and the faculty. Certainly we are all aware of the CIouncil's accomplishments as a representative Iiody seeking to olmtain the wishes of the students. In everything from simple questions of noisy flagpole ropes. up through extra-curricular problems. to such significant contributions as the inauguration of a driver education course, the Student Council has played a vital role. Xvhat is less publicized but just as important is the value of the undertakings suggested and carried out solely through the Council. These appear most promi- nently in the conducting of school assemblies, the presen- tation of the Student Council XVinter Dance, and espe- cially this vear the New York excursion to Fordham.

Martin Glogowski, Steven Gaesser, Paul lveis, Lawrence lidenhofer. Geoffrey lwfeyer. .Uiddle Row: Paul The Debating societies of McQuaid have one basic purpose: a polished speaker who can stand on his own two feet and express his opinions with intelligence. It is toward this finished product that months of hard work and miles of travel are directed. It is for this end that debaters spend hours of practice in perfecting their speeches and delivering them, and moderators rack their brains in vain attempts to keep their charges out of mis- chief on the frequent out-of-town trips. Labor and its position in America keynotes the topic for the year, Resolved that membership in a labor organization as a condition of employment should be illegal. Over the past months the senior debaters have participated in tournaments at such places as-Iamestown, Oswego, Hamilton College, Toronto. and New York. Oliver. john Cooke, Francis Mahoney, Richard Andrulis. Bark Razr: Eugene Mack, Fr. john Paret, David Northrup. .-lbrmt: Nlichael Siconolli. Timothy Scharf. while most of the effort of the underclassmen has been aimed at our two local sparring partners, Aquinas and XVebster. Not all of the debaters' attention, however, has been focused on this single topic. McQuaid debaters also par- ticipated in several speech festivals, and a Student Con- gress at Jamestown, where they proposed bills to a Con- gress modeled on the U. House of Representatives. In January. the Debating societies received member- ship in the National Forensic League, which promises a full schedule of tournaments, speech festivals, and Stu- dent Congresses next year. ln all, it has been a very profitable and satisfying year for the Debating societies of h1CQuaid.
