SENICR CLASS HISTORY When we first entered McQuatd as green freshmen, we ltttle realized our great responstbtltty tn betng one of the first classes of a new school wtth the prtvtlege and duty of setting up tradtttons for years to come We heard our first assembly addresses from Fr Kelly and, when a teacher nottced too many guided mtsstles fiytng around the classroom we got our first taste of the revered old Jesutt tnstttutton ofjug from Fr Hoffen Then, just as we were getttng used to ltfe at MCQ'U3ld dtsaster struck By 9 o clock of December 21st we were all aware that fire had destroyed the cafeteria durtng the ntght Unttl tt reopened a playroom turned lunchroom and staggered pertods were the rule But the unhappy memory of those days ts better left untold In sports, the freshman basketball team, led by Leo Doyle Jack Walsh and Gordte Ide bettered the past year s record with a 15 3 performance There was real promtse of thtngs to come Late tn Aprtl, the pages of the sophomore Latin book came ahve as the Thesptans presented Jultus Caesar And after we had run the Provmce Exam gauntlet tnto sophomore year we found ourselves regretttng that fate dtdn t get to htm sooner before he wrote hts endless Second year saw last year s football record of 5 l re versed But thts butldtng year reassured all that there were better days ahead After mtd year exams poltttcs took over the spotltght as McQ,uatd s student government was tmplemented by a judtctal Honor Court And no sooner had our JV basket ball team posted tts spectacular 17 l season than we found sophomore year fadtng away tn a sea of exams, as we prepared for the exalted posttton of upperclassmen untors tn name as well as tn rank, we returned from summer vacatton and nottced a few changes around school, chiefly Fr Foley s new type of Jug tn whtch we were treated to a full square foot of ttle to run around tn School was just a few weeks old when most of us left agatn wtth the Asian Flu by the way catchtng most of the World Sertes But many managed to recover tn time for the fall trtp when Fr McNamara led a group to New York and Washtngton for a weekend of stghtseetng and a vtstt to Woodstock, where the students were welcomed by their masters of old Thts was also the year when McQua1d put out tts first yearbook, the Accolade and tt surely dtd not lack thtngs to record The football team profited by the past year s expertence to come out wtth an tmpresstve 5 2 record the McQuatd Ltttle Theatre played host to The Came Mutmy Court Marttal and the Varstty basketball team kept up tts flying start pace for a l5 3 season After Christmas and theJanuary exams, speaking came to the forefront The team of Stu Metsenzahl and Dave Northrup won the first place trophy tn the Internattonal Speech Festtval at Toronto, and Larry Edenhofer brought tn a vtctory tn the Oratortcal Contest wtth hts eulogy of Teddy Roosevelt Sprtng brought wtth tt the Student Counctl elections Posters appeared on every wall as each class campatgned for tts own candtdates After the smoke of the vtgorous campatgn had finally cleared Paul Kennerson emerged vtctortous as Prestdent George Roche as Vtce Prestdent, and Tom Brancato as Secretary In June we all took a long awaited leave for another summer romp Sentor year dawned bright and encouraging as the football squad churned tts way to a brtlltant 7 0 record After retreat, the Dramattcs Soctety staged tts wtnter play, Ttme Ltmtt tn whtch Mtke Drons and Tony Ztto recetved awards for thetr outstandtng performances Ftnally the Chrtstmas vacatton brought an end to the needed rest Back from vacatton we burned the mtdntght otl for mtd years and then began the final semester of htgh school Meanwhile Ttm Scharf undaunted by the pros pect of approachtng exams won second place tn the American Legton Oratortcal Contest refustng to accept first only because he was too chtvalrous to take tt away from a gtrl The basketball team upset undefeated F rankltn to throw a scare into the most tmportant opponent of all And at about the same ttme, the news was released that 15 sentors had won New York State Scholarshtps As the wtnter snows melted we found our sentor year melttng away too The Oratortcal Contest the Sprtng Play, Macbeth the Easter Vacatton the Sodaltty Dance the Faculty Varstty Game-all passed away, not to return Soon all that was left of sentor year was exams Sentor Week, and Graduatton But the btg challenge ts yet to come Soon all the tratn tng we have recetved tn our four years at McQuatd wtll be put to use, etther tn a job or tn college We have had a great prtvtlege tn betng one of the ptoneertng classes of McQuatd Now tt ts our turn to make a reputatton for McQuatd men tn college and tn the world . . . .. . . . .
