THE CLASS OF PRESENTS 1959 ACCCDLADE McQuaid Jesuit High School Rochester, New York PAUL R. KENNERSON Editor WILLIAM B. KEMP Business Manager i 1 Prologue E HAVE iust finished, and we have no more than begun. Before us is a whole life . . . behind us four years that should serve us well. The men to whom we dedicate this book have given us four years of their lives. More perhaps, the dedication that is their life has given us an example of how to live . . . not alone for years, but for time beyond years. Now we look at life with new under- standing and a deepening insight. ln- sight has widened our perspective. School, for one thing, is more than a cheer or a tough passage or a lounge during recess. It is the abstract something that someone has called spirit. The great mys- terious future now takes more definite shape than college, marriage, iob. It must be the continuation of what has been be- gun here . . . a rule of life our laymen have perfected in themselves and given us to pattern . . . and to pass on again. Paul R. If one activity at MeQuaid is to be singled out as most indispensable to faculty-student relations, that activity would have to he the Student Council. Perhaps its most important aim is to promote cooper- ation among all students and to act as a moderator he- tween them and the faculty. Certainly we are all aware of the CIouncil's accomplishments as a representative Iiody seeking to olmtain the wishes of the students. In everything from simple questions of noisy flagpole ropes. up through extra-curricular problems. to such significant contributions as the inauguration of a driver education course, the Student Council has played a vital role. Xvhat is less publicized but just as important is the value of the undertakings suggested and carried out solely through the Council. These appear most promi- nently in the conducting of school assemblies, the presen- tation of the Student Council XVinter Dance, and espe- cially this vear the New York excursion to Fordham. 3-Y .1 - ' -5, lt's sp:-llc-d S-P-I-R-I-'lf' Student Council Prr'sidc'nt Paul Kvnmrrsun. It is toward this finished product that months of hard work and miles of travel are directed. It is for this end that debaters spend hours of practice in perfecting their speeches and delivering them, and moderators rack their brains in vain attempts to keep their charges out of mis- chief on the frequent out-of-town trips. Labor and its position in America keynotes the topic for the year, Resolved that membership in a labor organization as a condition of employment should be illegal. Over the past months the senior debaters have participated in tournaments at such places as-Iamestown, Oswego, Hamilton College, Toronto. and New York. Timothy Scharf. while most of the effort of the underclassmen has been aimed at our two local sparring partners, Aquinas and XVebster. Not all of the debaters' attention, however, has been focused on this single topic. McQuaid debaters also par- ticipated in several speech festivals, and a Student Con- gress at Jamestown, where they proposed bills to a Con- gress modeled on the U. House of Representatives. In January. the Debating societies received member- ship in the National Forensic League, which promises a full schedule of tournaments, speech festivals, and Stu- dent Congresses next year. ln all, it has been a very profitable and satisfying year for the Debating societies of h1CQuaid. The Perfect Season An Indian summer afternoon, a clear blue sky overhead, a padded green turf at their feetfffthe stage is set as the Knights ready to write another page in their football history book. This was the day on which a hard-charging and spirited McQuaid football machine matched wits and biceps with a stout and highly rated squad from lN'ebster. For the Knights the lYebster team proved big in stature . . . and that's all, The fourth quarter found the first stringers taking a well- deserved rest as the subs took a hand in posting a sharp 38-0 victory for MeQuaid. In sharp contrast with the morale of the Mc- Quaiders, the weather prospects were fairly men- acing as we traveled south to meet Canisteo. And although the wet turf somewhat hampered our well- rounded blitz, forty-eight minutes of lion-hearted, bone-crushing football found MeQuaid on the UP end of a 31-6 score. Exactly two months had passed since the first practice session of September first. The McQuaid football team had come a long way in that short time, as the 5-0 record gave eloquent testimony to. But the biggest test of the season's progress was yet to come. Terms had to -be settled with Livonia Central before McQuaid could raise the unde- feated, untied victory banner. The score stood 20-0 at halftime. Twenty-four minutes remained until McQ'uaid's 1958 football season would be history. The Livonia victory, a hard fought 26-13 battle, marked another McQuaid first-the first unde- feated football season. It is not often that a team has an undefeated season. To be victorious in any contest does not come as a free gift. The price of victory is hard work and sweat. Day after day, week after week the battle must be fought on the practice field. It is here that a game is won or lost. It is here that the real heroes are made. Certainly we owe a debt of gratitude to the men behind the team, Mr. Mancarella, head coach, and Mr. Seymour and Mr. janick, assistant coaches, who have shaped a squad of spirited players into a polished, confident football team. McQuaid stock took a slight rise before exams. First Penlield fell before a 58-point attack led by XValsh's I8 points. XVell, practically no sweat. Nlaybe the first five would have to play all but the last four minutes. And then the Knights opened a 13-3 lead in the opening minutes: it looked like an easy win. But East Rochester didn't follow the script and beat McQuaid 52-5l. During the week of .Ianuary 25 the N1cQuaid esuit High basketball team had one of two choices to make. First: it Could fold up and play dead for the rest of the season. Once a team has started to lose, most coaches will tell you that it's pretty hard to break the habit. Second: it could do a complete about-face and play basketball against Brockport. The varsity realized the seriousness of the situation. E: A Tribute. . . In ways that we have never fully appreciated until now, Nir. lyionaqan has played an important role in our development from youth to manhood. His calm assurance, his devotion to his work and to us, have afforded a glimpse at the reality of the ideal he has tried to lprinq to life in us through his coaching and example the character ofa Christian gentleman. Almost incidental is his record as coach of our varsity for the past two years. During this period he has compiled a record of thirty-one victories and seven losses-Hfour of them hy one point. His develop- ment and implementation of the physical education program at McQuaid have made it one of the out- standinq of its kind in the state. The distinctive char- acter of his teams has gained for him and the school. the respect and admiration of his fellow coaches and fN1cQuaid's athletic opponents. In paying trilaute to him. we really pay trihute to all the other Coaches and members ofthe athletic de- partment. for he has always spoken of his work as only a part of theirs. For many things then. both great and small. we feel it only proper to offer our gratitude to him and his fellow Coaches. Thank you Nir. Moitaqan. very much. Mr. George C. Monagan, Director and Coach of Varsity Basketball. tiff Q50 Il Standing: Coach George C. Monagan, David Notebaert, john NValsh, Edwin Conmey, joseph Fustanio, Edward XVandtke. Thomas Trevett, Rev. Wrestling This year for the first time wrestling made its interscholastic debut at McQuaid. Until two years ago wrestling was chiefly a college sport. Now it has entered the high school field and is more than a welcome addition to our already wide athletic program. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Masino, our team has shaped up and proven itself to be a formidable match for any and all comers. From all indications wrestling at McQuaid is developing into a very popular and well-supported sport. or f M ' ' . SENICR CLASS HISTORY When we first entered McQuatd as green freshmen, we ltttle realized our great responstbtltty tn betng one of the first classes of a new school wtth the prtvtlege and duty of setting up tradtttons for years to come We heard our first assembly addresses from Fr Kelly and, when a teacher nottced too many guided mtsstles fiytng around the classroom we got our first taste of the revered old Jesutt tnstttutton ofjug from Fr Hoffen Then, just as we were getttng used to ltfe at MCQ'U3ld dtsaster struck By 9 o clock of December 21st we were all aware that fire had destroyed the cafeteria durtng the ntght Unttl tt reopened a playroom turned lunchroom and staggered pertods were the rule But the unhappy memory of those days ts better left untold In sports, the freshman basketball team, led by Leo Doyle Jack Walsh and Gordte Ide bettered the past year s record with a 15 3 performance There was real promtse of thtngs to come Late tn Aprtl, the pages of the sophomore Latin book came ahve as the Thesptans presented Jultus Caesar And after we had run the Provmce Exam gauntlet tnto sophomore year we found ourselves regretttng that fate dtdn t get to htm sooner before he wrote hts endless Second year saw last year s football record of 5 l re versed But thts butldtng year reassured all that there were better days ahead After mtd year exams poltttcs took over the spotltght as McQ,uatd s student government was tmplemented by a judtctal Honor Court And no sooner had our JV basket ball team posted tts spectacular 17 l season than we found sophomore year fadtng away tn a sea of exams, as we prepared for the exalted posttton of upperclassmen untors tn name as well as tn rank, we returned from summer vacatton and nottced a few changes around school, chiefly Fr Foley s new type of Jug tn whtch we were treated to a full square foot of ttle to run around tn School was just a few weeks old when most of us left agatn wtth the Asian Flu by the way catchtng most of the World Sertes But many managed to recover tn time for the fall trtp when Fr McNamara led a group to New York and Washtngton for a weekend of stghtseetng and a vtstt to Woodstock, where the students were welcomed by their masters of old Thts was also the year when McQua1d put out tts first yearbook, the Accolade and tt surely dtd not lack thtngs to record The football team profited by the past year s expertence to come out wtth an tmpresstve 5 2 record the McQuatd Ltttle Theatre played host to The Came Mutmy Court Marttal and the Varstty basketball team kept up tts flying start pace for a l5 3 season After Christmas and theJanuary exams, speaking came to the forefront The team of Stu Metsenzahl and Dave Northrup won the first place trophy tn the Internattonal Speech Festtval at Toronto, and Larry Edenhofer brought tn a vtctory tn the Oratortcal Contest wtth hts eulogy of Teddy Roosevelt Sprtng brought wtth tt the Student Counctl elections Posters appeared on every wall as each class campatgned for tts own candtdates After the smoke of the vtgorous campatgn had finally cleared Paul Kennerson emerged vtctortous as Prestdent George Roche as Vtce Prestdent, and Tom Brancato as Secretary In June we all took a long awaited leave for another summer romp Sentor year dawned bright and encouraging as the football squad churned tts way to a brtlltant 7 0 record After retreat, the Dramattcs Soctety staged tts wtnter play, Ttme Ltmtt tn whtch Mtke Drons and Tony Ztto recetved awards for thetr outstandtng performances Ftnally the Chrtstmas vacatton brought an end to the needed rest Back from vacatton we burned the mtdntght otl for mtd years and then began the final semester of htgh school Meanwhile Ttm Scharf undaunted by the pros pect of approachtng exams won second place tn the American Legton Oratortcal Contest refustng to accept first only because he was too chtvalrous to take tt away from a gtrl The basketball team upset undefeated F rankltn to throw a scare into the most tmportant opponent of all And at about the same ttme, the news was released that 15 sentors had won New York State Scholarshtps As the wtnter snows melted we found our sentor year melttng away too The Oratortcal Contest the Sprtng Play, Macbeth the Easter Vacatton the Sodaltty Dance the Faculty Varstty Game-all passed away, not to return Soon all that was left of sentor year was exams Sentor Week, and Graduatton But the btg challenge ts yet to come Soon all the tratn tng we have recetved tn our four years at McQuatd wtll be put to use, etther tn a job or tn college We have had a great prtvtlege tn betng one of the ptoneertng classes of McQuatd Now tt ts our turn to make a reputatton for McQuatd men tn college and tn the world . . . .. . . . .
